Changing Tides

Morning/ Rehearsal Hall
"We have to show a list of all the possible events to RDX Sir, so prepare a list of the events that we discussed, and..." Sharon stopped abruptly as Swayam held a sheet of paper in front of her. "Ye rahi list, check kar lo ekbar, then we can show it to RDX Sir."
Sharon was startled once again but she took the paper from Swayam, only to return it to him in the very next moment: "Mere paas time nai hai. I hope you've listed all the events."
"Almost all," replied Swayam.
"Almost, what do you mean by almost?" asked an irritated Sharon.
"I haven't included the nail art competition as I think it's frivolous, also the cheerleading dance on the first day is not required," spoke Swayam, looking at the list.
Sharon was mad. "But... that's the welcome dance! How dare you strike it off? Kisse puchhke tumne..."
But Swayam once again silenced Sharon:
"First day ka theme hai bollywood. And we already have one welcome dance on bollywood style. Cheerleading doesn't go with the theme and we don't have the time for two welcome dances. And RDX Sir wanted the events to go along with the theme. Tum chaho to include kar sakti ho, but then I'll have to talk to RDX Sir about it aur phir unka decision final hoga," Swayam concluded.
"How dare you?" fired the angry Diva. She was still in disbelief that it was Swayam who spoke those words, the same Swayam who would gladly receive all insults from her and not retaliate even once. True that Swayam's behavior had changed a great deal in the past couple of weeks, it was noticeable. But she never expected him to question her authority. She didn't think he would strike back, with a vengeance.
"Himmat kaisi hui tumhari mujhe contradict karne ki?" She snapped her fingers and continued, "Remember I'm the cultural secretary of this college and YOU, are nothing but an assistant. Issilye apni aukaat mein raho."
"Aah! Correction mademoiselle."
Swayam spoke with a smile pointing his index finger,
"Main aapka, ya nai Sharon RaiPrakash ka assistant nai hoon. NO. I'm the assistant cultural secretary of this college, and I too am entitled to certain rights. Mujhe bhi haq hai events decide karne ka. And if any dispute arises, such as this one, the cultural head will take the call. And I guess in this case, even RDX Sir will agree with me."
Sharon knew Swayam was saying the truth. They really were short of time as there were lots of entries for bollywood. But how could they not have their welcome dance on the first day- it was a tradition for the Dazzler girls. And what would she tell the girls? That in spite of her being the CS, Swayam Shekhawat knocked off their performance!
She sat down on one of the dice shaped stools. Her eyes were devoid of the fire that they held even a few moments ago. She was evidently sad. She looked up at Swayam, her hazel eyes full of anguish:
"You know it's a St. Louis tradition right? Har saal... har saal we perform it as an opening act," Sharon said as her lips quivered. She looked like a little girl who was being deprived of a doll she dearly coveted.
"You mean it's a Dazzler tradition." Swayam quipped.
The Diva's temper momentarily flared up which showed its impact in her raised left eyebrow, but she remained seated rather resignedly as Swayam continued his onslaught. Swayam walked a little towards the wall with the mirror, pulled another similar looking dice shaped stool and sat facing Sharon. Going through the lists in his hand he added:
"You know Sharon, things change, situations change, people change and even traditions are subject to change." He looked up and looking straight into her big hazel eyes, said: "After all change is the only constant thing."

Morning/ Corridor outside classroom
Kriya Ghai glided past the sweeper like a storm startling him, but soon she slipped almost about to fall flat on her face. Though her dancer's agility helped her avoid the fall but she couldn't control running into Neha who immediately fell on the floor with a shriek. "Kriya... dekh ke chalo!" Kriya smiled awkwardly, helping her get up, "I'm so sorry Neha". The sweeper smirked and pointed at the CAUTION: WET FLOOR sign which Kriya had conveniently overlooked. "Damn!" she murmured to herself in her usual way: "hey Universe ji, ek to aaj main phir se late hoon... upar se yeh Swayam, pata nahi kahan gayab ho gaya!" Swayam had called her an hour back trying to convince her to do the couple dance with Rey. For some odd reason, he thought Kriya and Rey were the best people for the dance. Kriya on the other hand wanted Swayam and Sharon to do the dance, and today she came to college with the resolution that she will, by hook or by crook, convince Swayam and Sharon for the couple dance. Sharon badi tedhi kheer hai, uske liye ungli bhi tedhi karni padegi. "Kriya, Kriya!" Kriya realised Neha was shouting into her eardrums. "Kahan kho gayi? Chalo..." she demanded. "Haan haan chalo. Waise Neha tum aaj kuchh zyaada chilla nai rahi ho? No I mean you look disturbed, issiliye puchha," said Kriya. "What telling Kriya?" Neha made a sad face, "Puchho hi mat." "Okay" shrugged Kriya. "Me aur my tragedy..." Neha continued nonetheless. Kriya tried to listen attentively but soon her attention was drawn towards some students standing outside the classroom.
The Dazzler boys Reyaansh, Vicky and Nilesh stood at the classroom door. "Jeez dude why do we even need subjects like Elective English? I mean who wants to learn Introduction to Literature!" Nilesh sulked. "True dude," added Vicky, "And we have already done Eliot's Gift of the Magi in school. We don't need to sit in this class. Chal na bunk marte hai."
"Eliot wrote Journey of the Magi. Gift of the Magi is a short story by O' Henri," said a female voice. Rey turned hearing the familiar voice. It was Kriya, standing behind, smiling. A soft breeze came from nowhere and brushed against Rey's gelled hair as he was lost in the innocent smile of Kriya Ghai. (KriyAansh tune in bg) The twinkle in her eyes told him she had something up her sleeve. So what is it this time Miss Baatcutter? Bring it on. Reyaansh Singhania is ready.
"Haan haan ek hi baat hai," said Vicky, trying to hide his embarrassment. "Ek hi baat nahi hai," snapped Neha before Kriya could react. Vicky's face was red. He fought back, "Haan tumhe to bahat pata hai na. English tumhari mother tongue jo hai." Vicky laughed, joined by Nilesh. Rey and Kriya, both confused exchanged looks. Neha glared at Vicky and pulled Kriya's arm: "Kriya chalo. Hum inside chalte hai. Inke muh nai lagte hai." Kriya wanted to find out what was wrong between Neha and Vicky but right now she had other priorities to deal with. "Neha tum jao," she said to her, "I'll join you in a while." Neha walked inside not before she threw one last smouldering glance at Vicky. Kriya didn't waste any more time and asked Rey: "Rey aap ne Swayam ko kahin dekha? Mujhe usse bahat zaroori baat karni hai." Oh to tumhe Swayam se baat karni hai thought Rey. He was slightly disappointed hearing Swayam's name but he managed to hide it: "Nahi Swayam ko to nahi dekha maine but I guess wo college aa gaya hai as he has a lot of work to do. Waise Kriya kaam to humein bhi karni hai..." "Damn!" Kriya interrupted Rey. "Ab main usse kahan dhundoo, phone bhi nahi utha raha hai," Kriya said loudly to herself. Nilesh elbowed Rey and whispered: "Dekha dekha, Swayam ki itni fikar. I'm telling you dude something's definitely cooking between the two of them." Vicky jumped in: "Haan aur uss din Swayam kaise Sharon ke saath lad gaya, Kriya ke liye..." Both Nilesh and Vicky did their trademark gestures pairing Kriya and Swayam making Rey wanting to strangle both of them. "Shut up both of you," said Rey and cursed under his breath. "Kriya I guess you're forgetting that as AGS aapki kaafi saare responsibilities hai. I wanna see aapne kya planning ki hai," declared Rey loudly with a straight face. Kriya was confused. "Actually... come with me..." a determined Rey dragged Kriya through the corridor who was too stunned to say anything.

Morning/ Rehearsal Hall
"Are you alluding to yourself?" asked Sharon.
"What do you mean?" asked Swayam.
"Yahin ke ye jo tumhare preachy philosophical talks hai, regarding change, ye sab tum apne bare mein bol rahe ho, right? This... this new devil-may-care attitude of yours... ye kehna chahte ho na that you've changed yourself?" said Sharon trying immensely hard to control her temper though her lips twitched from the heat that was piling up inside. She was still shocked at herself that she actually brought this up.
"Why my lady? Are you missing the old me?" Swayam taunted her. "Actually I didn't say I've changed. It's you. Tum keh rahi ho yeh."
Sharon saw the truth in Swayam's words and her eyes drooped. She desperately tried to justify her actions.
"Haan. Haan main keh rahi hoon," she managed to speak looking at nothing in particular, as her lips quivered. "Ye jo tum kar rahe ho mere saath itne dino se... ye mean baatein, cold behaviour, mujhe ignore karna..." she stopped as she realized she was giving out way too much, "ye sab dekhke koi bhi kahega that you have changed," she said looking at Swayam.
"Wow... so you succeeded in observing someone who's not a Dazzler. Congratulations," Swayam taunted her further.
Sharon's temper flared up a few degrees more and she was about to yell at Swayam. Swayam who was undeterred continued:
"May be you're right. May be I've changed. But this change is for good. Abhi chalein... RDX Sir ko events ki list deni hai." Swayam walked out leaving behind a mad, confused Sharon.
She wanted to kill Swayam Shekhawat, she was certain. The only thing preventing her from executing her will was that she didn't yet decide on all the innovative torture techniques she would apply on him.
