"Jeevi why do you think he left me? What did I do?" She questioned and her friend looked at her helplessly. "When do you think he'll come back?" She asked again.
Jeevika took a deep breath and told her friend the truth. Manvi needed to accept the truth, this life of illusion would lead her nowhere. "Manvi he is not coming back. Not today not tomorrow." With tears in her eyes Jeevika held her shoulders, "Why don't you understand? He is not coming back."
She shrugged off Jeevika's hands from her shoulder and laughed at her, "You have lost it. He never breaks his promise."
"Virat this is not fair. It is Jeevika's engagement tomorrow and you are leaving the city today? You won't be able to make it on time." She pouted and crossed her arms.
He laughed at her and held her wrist. She kept pulling her hand back but he didn't give up. Finally she let him hold her hand. He kissed her fingers, "Baby I have to go but I promise you I'll be back on time for the engagement."
She looked at him and questioned, "I don't believe you."
He kissed her cheeks then her jawline, causing a deep crimson to spread across her cheeks, "Hey I never break promises- not when I made a promise to my beautiful wife."
"You'll come on time?" She asked excitedly.
Kissing her cheeks yet again he answered, "Yes baby."
"Jeevi I'm not going to talk to him. He promised and he is not here." She complained.
"I know. He is going to miss my and his best friend's engagement." Jeevika complained too.
"Both of you calm down. If he doesn't come then I'll deal with him." Viren promised.
Suddenly someone grabbed her from behind and kissed her neck. The familiar touch could only be his; she smiled and immediately turned around to hug him. "You are right on time!"
He leaned in for a kiss when Viren and Jeevika cleared their throat. "Get a room you two. It is our engagement and look at the two of you romancing."
He laughed at his best friend and his wife's best friend. Pulling her closer he answered, "Learn the tricks Viren. After marriage this is what you will have to do."
She gasped at his shamelessness and elbowed him.
The old sweet memory made her smile. "He was shameless. Do you remember on your engagement day how much he teased you and Viren?"
After thinking for a while she asked again, "Do you think he forgot about me? Maybe if I go and beg him to come back he will?"
Jeevika stood there listening to her friend mumble random things. Six months, it'd been six months since he left her and she was still at the same place. All she did day and night was talk about him, think about him or stare out the window waiting for him.The moment he left her she stopped talking about anything but him.
Jeevika's phone started ringing, it was Manvi's father-in-law.
"Jeevika dear how is the party going? Is she enjoying?" Her father-in-law, Varun, asked hopefully.
Feeling completely helpless Jeevika answered, "No uncle. She left the party to come outside and look at trees. She has started talking again but she only talks about him."
"Bring her home Jeevika. Thank you for trying dear." Varun answered defeated.
There Vanshika, her mother-in-law nudged Varun, "Is she fine? How is she doing?"
Sitting on a chair Varun answered, "She is still hung up on him. She left the party to go look at trees." Wiping his tears Varun looked at Vanshika, "I'll never forgive him Vanshika. I'll never forgive him for leaving her. How will she live without him? Six months and no improvement!"
Vashika too sat on the chair wiping her tears.
"Lets go home Manvi."
She looked at Jeevika and shook her head. "No I feel so much better here. You know it had been so long since I came out of the house. I feel closer to him here. These trees, this pathway, gosh he would have loved it. After he comes back I'll bring him here."
Pulling Jeevika's hand she questioned, "Jeevi should I wait for him here? Will he come for me if he finds out that I'm waiting?"
"Manvi you are drunk. Lets get you home." Jeevika tried to convince her but she wasn't listening to Jeevika. She kept taking his name wondering when he will come and get her.
Finally Jeevika called Viren to come help her and both of them took her home.
By the time they reached Vadhera house, she had passed out in the car.
She got up and noticed that she was on her bed. The empty bed made her anxious; she looked around and tried to find him only to realize that he wasn't there with her. He left her and he hadn't call her even once since past six months. She turned on the laptop and did something that had become her reason to survive since he left her.
She opened her email account and started typing an email.
Dear Virat!
Come back baby, please come back. I miss you, I miss you so much that it hurts even while breathing. They keep telling me to forget you and that you have left me but I know you haven't. You promised you will never leave me. Please come back baby.
They think I am losing my mind and they try to stop me from talking about you. No one understands me here, please come back and tell them that I'm not crazy. Every time I try to tell them that you will come back they inject some kind of drug in me and I fall asleep. It hurts and I don't like it. Come back and stop it. I need you Virat. I can't do this anymore. Come back, save me.
Yours,
Manvi
She opened her wardrobe and took out an album, her wedding pictures. She stared at a picture that was his favorite- in the picture her head was bent a little due to embarrassment and the blush on her face was clearly visible while he was looking at her with a smirk.
Holding her dad's hand she took slow steps towards the man that would soon be her husband. If not for him she could have never done this. The only thing that kept her going even after knowing that soon all eyes would be on her were his promises for a beautiful future, his commitment towards her and her love for him. As she walked down the aisle she peeked through her veil to look at him and there he was, in his tux looking as handsome as ever, smiling at her lovingly; his eyes glowing with excitement. All the nervousness, anxiety that she felt a few minutes ago seemed silly to her now. There was nothing she wanted more than him and she couldn't be happier with anybody but him.
He waited impatiently to see his bride. Every night he dreamed of her in a different wedding gown knowing she'd look beautiful in anything. Few more minutes and she would be his that was the only thought that kept him from running towards her, to get a peek of her in her wedding dress.
The background music changed to a softer one and everybody stood up causing his heartbeat to race. He knew she will make an entry any second so his eyes stood glued to the entrance. As soon as she walked in he went numb. She was looking gorgeous; he couldn't even move his eyes from her face to look at her dress. She could have been wearing a dishcloth and he wouldn't have noticed. In that instant their eyes met and he imagined his entire life with her. It would be perfect, just him and her.
While looking into her eyes, he took her hands in his and held it.
"I do." She heard him say and she too managed to whisper, "I do." After exchanging their vows they exchanged rings.
"By the power vested in me by the state of California, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may now kiss the bride." The priest announced.
She placed her one hand in his and the other on his neck while his was on her waist. He pulled her closer and kissed her passionately. They were lost in the moment, unwilling to move away from each other but the light poke on his arm from his best friend, Viren brought him back from his dreamland. He quickly moved away and looked at her right on time to see her blush due to embarrassment.
She smiled at the picture and traced his face with her fingers. "Come back baby." She whispered and flipped the page to look at more pictures when her eyes fell upon a small suitcase in his wardrobe.
She took it out and examined it. It was his. She opened it and stared at it.
**************************************************************************************************************
They were in the living room discussing her condition, trying to find a way to bring her out of her misery when they heard her scream.
Varun entered the room first and found her crouched on the floor breathing heavily. "Manvi whats wrong?" He asked urgently while Vanshika patted her head.
Grabbing Vanshika's hand she weeped, "Mom when is he coming back? Where is he mom? The guards, the guards returned his belongings." She pointed towards his suitcase that had his personal diary, his wallet, his uniform and some pictures of him and her.
Varun couldn't see his beloved daughter-in-law in so much pain so he tried to reason with her, "Manvi you need to get out this. You need to understand. He is not coming back. Virat is dead Manvi. VIRAT IS DEAD."
"NO." She screamed and sat on the floor. She got up and nudged Vanshika, "Mom why is dad talking like this? How can he say such a thing about his own son? Mom he will come. He promised me. He never breaks his promise."
Varun grabbed her shoulders, "Beta he is not coming. Please come to your senses."
"Virat." She mumbled and fainted.
"Doctor what happened to her?" Varun asked the doctor.
"Mr. Vadhera her condition is getting worse day by day. If her condition doesn't improve I'm sorry to say but we will lose her."
"Please doctor do something. Make her better. I have already lost my son I can't afford to lose her too. Please do something." Vanshika pleaded.
She could hear her mom and dad talk to the doctor but she couldn't pay attention to them. She needed to know when he'd be back. It was almost six months and he hadn't called her once! She decided she will not talk to him once he gets back and she will tell him all the non-sense everyone has been talking behind his back. She laughed inwardly at their silliness. How could they believe that he was no more? He would never leave her, he'd said so himself.
"Do you have to go?" She pleaded.
"I spent all the time training in U.S. Air force to be a fighter pilot so that I can go fight." He replied sarcastically.
"Why can't you be a normal pilot?"
He grabbed her waist and pulled her close, " I've told you this thousand times."
"I know. You are a patriot, going high up in the air and flying a high speed jet is your passion and." Before she could complete her sentence he kissed her. "If you know it why did you ask then?"
"What about me? Every time you leave I get so lonely." She asked with tears in her eyes.
"Hold it." He warned her. "Don't you dare let a tear drop fall from your eyes. Baby you know how much you mean to me. I won't be able to go if you give me such a sad good bye."
"Then don't go." She pleaded holding onto him.
"Don't make this hard for me please." He begged.
"Fine go." She turned around angrily. He hugged her from behind and nuzzled her neck. "Will you miss me?"
She shook her head in negative. "You won't miss me? Do you love me?" She shook her head in negative again. "Fine then I won't come back."
She immediately turned around and glared at him, "Virat don't even utter a word. How dare you?"
She grabbed his collar and scolded him, "What will I do without you? I can't live a day without you. You better come back and come back soon otherwise I'll never talk to you."
He gave her a huge smile, "I'll come back soon baby and we'll go for a long vacation, wherever you want."
With a heavy heart she asked him again, "You will be back right Virat?"
He kissed her cheeks then placed his palm on her cheeks, "I promise you baby I'll come back. I'll never leave you." After kissing her forehead and whispering, "Wait for me I'll be back soon baby" he left to fight for his country.
"He will be back. He promised." They heard her mumble in her sleep.
