![]() DAY 3 Payal was too tired and said and that she would explore the port city itself. Akash said that he would stay back too. Neither of them allowed Arnav and Khushi to stay back' It was obvious they wanted alone-time and were giving Arnav and Khushi the same. So, in the end, VERY reluctantly Arnav and Khushi would accompany each other to Athens... Athens The next day, Khushi surprised Arnav again with a yellow-flower-on-white sundress. They left the chalet at ten in the morning and hired a cab to the main city from Piraeus. Khushi was carrying a rucksack with her and Arnav couldn't help but wonder what was in that. Maybe food, he thought. Clearing his throat, he asked Khushi "Where to?" Immediately, Khushi said "Acropolis!" Arnav nodded and instructed the driver to take them to the Acropolis. They stepped out of the car in front of worn out stairs carved into the hill. As they walked upstairs, they saw real-estate people sitting there and displaying houses around the Acropolis which gave a picturesque view of the great Parthenon. The hill was covered with olive trees and Khushi had a glassy look in her eyes as she drank in the view. "Apparently, the olive trees were planted on the hill in honor of the Goddess Athena..." Khushi said to Arnav, turning her head around slowly. "Huh?" Arnav said, with a confused look. "Yes. The Acropolis was built in honor of the patron Goddess of the city...Athena. It was actually a temple, but the Romans took away her statue and now it has disappeared" she said wistfully. Arnav simply looked at her, unable to believe that she was the same naive Khushi who fell into his arms the other day. She seemed so mature and intelligent now... What had happened! Khushi continued with her Greek Talk. "The lost statue is called Athena Parthenos. You know Arnavji" But Arnav froze as he realized that she had not called him Mr.Raizada even when they were alone... "Athena was a virgin Goddess and her statue in Acropolis personified that form of hers, so that the Athenians could remember to retain their purity and-" she stopped suddenly and blushed as she remembered what she was saying and to whom. "Uhm, well you know the Parthenon is not the only structure inside the compound, it also has Propylaia, the Erechtheion and the temple of Athena Nike. Oh, and Athena Nike was the representation of Athena set for battle. This is such a beautiful structure! And the statue was of chryselephantine type and I really hate the Venetians for looting such a beautiful place and..." Arnav watched in amazement as she rambled on passionately about the damage done to the Acropolis. She had been talking for so long that Arnav had zoned her out, catching only few phrases like 'has to be highest building in city'... 'necessary for every ancient city'... 'Zeus'... 'Pantheon'... 'Ionian pillars'... 'magnetic field' Finally he lost it. "Khushi, Khushi relax! Seriously, what is wrong with you!" Khushi stopped talking and looked at Arnav sheepishly. "Uh, sorry. I always get carried away." "Yeah, I can see that" he smirked. She laughed, both of them forgetting that they were supposed to be angry with each other. "Ashu Bhaiyya used to say..." she trailed off, as her smile faded and her eyes got wet. "I am sorry, lets walk a bit more and then we will stop" Khushi said softly as Arnav walked behind her silently and confused. She lead him to a tree, a few meter from the edge of the cliff (We were not allowed to go till the top, but well, it is necessary for the story' ;P ) She sat down and opened her bag. She pulled out two sandwiches and gave it to Arnav. "Have these. Your medicines will be in the smallest zip and the water is right here so don't forget to have it after your meal." With that she got up, but Arnav caught her wrist "Where are you going?" "Oh, no where just over there..." Khushi said, pointing to a rock little bit more ahead. "What the-! Are you crazy?! Thats too close to the edge!" he snapped. Khushi sighed and pulled her wrist away. "You sound just like Ash-... Uff, never mind!" She went and sat on the rock much to Arnav's annoyance and he stopped in his tracks as he saw her take out a long book which he recognized as a sketch-pad and some charcoal. He saw her hand resting hesitantly on the paper and then move in fluid strokes. He watched her work as he ate the sandwiches and fifteen minutes later, went towards her. He peeked over her shoulder and then gazed down. To his surprise, he could see the Pillars of Zeus from there and saw a neat, near replica sketch of them in the paper. "Khushi?" he said, trying to keep the shock out of his voice. "It was my dream to draw those Pillars from up here ever since I completed my B.Arc..." she said, still looking at the Athens skyline. "Y-You draw beautifully!" he said. "Why didn't you take up some job somewhere? You would have gotten in instantly..." "I did have a job Arnavji... Until two years back it was all just perfect but then..." she closed her eyes as the images of the past assaulted her. Khushi stared at the unmoving body of her Bhabhi and looked up as soon as the door of the ward flew open and Ashish stormed in. "Kuku! Muskaan!" Khushi stood up, not knowing how to tell her brother. "Kuku, are you alright? What happened to Muskaan?" His eyes went to his wife, lying on the bed. He ran to her and took her hand in his. "Muskaan! Muskaan, say something dammit! I-" he froze. "H-her pulse!" Khushi watched her brother shatter, as realization flit across his face. Within moments, he was in denial mode. "No, no! It cannot be! No! Muskaan, Dhriti left us! Now you can't leave me alone as well! No!" "Bhaiyya.." Khushi said softly, keeping her hand on her brother's shoulder. "...we should get going" she said softly and started walking away but Arnav grabbed her arm and pulled her back. "What the hell Khushi! Stop blocking me out! Why are you-" Her head jerked up. "I am blocking you out?! I am blocking YOU out! Fine, maybe I am but why SHOULDN'T I? What are you to me!" she cried. "I am your husband dammit!" he said, shaking her violently. "Yes. A husband who doesn't trust me! A husband for six months! A husband who did not bother to find out the truth! A husband who came to his own conclusions, without ONCE asking me! And-" "Khushi, what the hell are you talking about!" he asked angrily. "You don't know? I am talking about this SHAM of a marriage!" Khushi screamed. There was an electric silence between them as Arnav let go of her. "You don't know why I married you!" he said icily. "I bloody well DO!" she screamed and her hand flew up to her mouth instantly. Suddenly, Arnav's confidence was gone. "What?" "Nothing. Lets go." she said, hurriedly packing her things. "No you don't Khushi Kumari Gupta Singh Raizada. Today, you are talking!" he grabbed her arm and pulled her to him. Khushi looked into his eyes and finally made a decision. "Fine. Yes. Yes I know. So what?" Arnav let her go. "Aren't you going to defend yourself?" "No." she said defiantly "Why not? You know you're wrong?" he smirked. "Because Mr Raizada, you don't deserve it!" Arnav flinched. They were back to 'Mr Raizada'. But then his anger returned. "Everyone deserves the truth!" "No. Not those who don't even seek it!" Khushi hissed. "Well, those who know it, don't seek it!" he retorted. He closed his eyes in anger. "Khushi, I swear you dare hurt my Di, you will regret ever meeting me and-" "I already do!" Her soft reply made his eyes fly open and clash against her hurt filled, wet eyes. Her reply stumped him but his anger returned. "Look Khushi, you are a married woman now and you better not go around with your Shyam and-" Khushi pushed him violently. " I hate you Mr Arnav Singh Raizada!" Sobbing, she ran away. Few moments later, both were sitting in the taxi, sticking to their respective sides of their seats of the car. Tears were flowing continuously from Khushi's eyes. Her eyes were closed and she was breathing deeply. Arnav was a bit too shocked... Too many questions, no answers, little time and heavy silence... Anjali stared at the face of the sleeping face of her husband. She wondered if his conscience didn't prick him even a bit. And here he was, sleeping peacefully. She contemplated killing him while he was asleep... He had killed a woman, attempted to kill a man, had cheated on two women, defended a criminal who had destroyed Khushiji's family and scattered it... And she grimaced in self-loathing as she shuddered at the thought that the cheat had defended her father Aniket Mallik... The man had destroyed both Chhote and Khushiji's life. That was a secret she hoped she would be able to carry till her grave, as not a single soul other than her knew about it. Suddenly the car lurched to a stop and their driver turned to look at them with an apologetic face. "Sir and Ma'am, the road is blocked from here. There are some riots going on the other side. I can't move the car further than this... " Khushi peeped out and struggled to read the Greek sign board. "Pla-Plati-Platia Syn-synda-syndagmados?!" She frowned. "Syndagma?" She turned to the driver. "Are we by any chance near the Syntagma Square?" she asked. "Yes ma'am!" "And what do we do now?" Arnav asked. "Sir, you need to get down here itself!" the driver said. Arnav sighed and got down. Simultaneously, Khushi got down from the other side onto the Square. Both watched as the driver backed up and drove away. The Syntagma square was filled with protestors. Some had pitched up their tents even. There were sign boards everywhere. A kiosk read 'The Real Democracy'. Khushi squinted at a signboard and read " K-kini-Kinimav Aga-Aganaki- Aganaktismnon Pol-Polit-Politn" Arnav joined Khushi on the Square and asked "How did you do that?" They began to cross the road. "Do what?" she asked. "Read that sign?" "It is not that difficult... Firstly, in Physics and Maths we cover a lot of Greek alphabets. And as a teen, Greek stuff fascinated me. So I just learnt the alphabet." "So, you know Greek?" he asked incredulously. The fact that she could speak English despite her desi style had been shocking enough. "No. I can just read what is written" Arnav nodded. "What now?" Khushi asked as they stepped onto the footpath. "It is a strike so getting a taxi would be a slick chance... So I guess we stay in a hotel for tonight..." Khushi nodded, knowing that it was the best solution. Arnav continued. "Athens is a tourist attraction. We'll surely find a hotel easily..." They had entered a deserted shopping complex. And suddenly Khushi sneezed. Moment later, Arnav sneezed. Khushi sneezed again and both broke into fits of sneezing. "T-tear *sneeze* Gas!" Arnav said. Khushi nodded and took out a hanky and gave it to Arnav. When he gave her questioning look, she rolled her eyes and opened the hanky and folded it diagonally into a triangle. She extended towards Arnav and tied it around his nose and mouth. She leaned over his shoulder in her toes to tie the knot and Arnav closed his eyes as he felt her breath wash his neck. "Done!" she said and withdrew. "What about you?" he asked. "There is only one hanky!" Khushi said and started to walk. He jogged and caught up with her. "But what about you?" "I'll be fine" Khushi said and stopped. Her faced scrunched up and she began to sneeze continuously. "Khushi you okay?" he asked, slightly alarmed. Khushi nodded, still sneezing. After quite a few sneezes, she stopped and inhaled to catch her breath but too deeply. She sneezed twice more and the two began to walk. They had entered an empty street and could see lights coming from the left. Just as they began to follow, Khushi made the mistake of looking back. Arnav was walking ahead, taking Khushi along with him by her hand. Suddenly, he felt her freeze. "Khushi, what-" he started and turned to see Khushi frozen on the spot and staring with a haunted look on her face at a burning effigy of someone. He tugged at her arm, but she refused to budge. Khushi took slow steps towards the effigy. "Khushi... Khushi what are you doing?" Arnav said and grabbed her arm. "Papa..." she said softly and Arnav looked at her confused. "Khushi let's go!" he said sternly and tugged her away. What followed next would haunt Arnav for weeks... Khushi collapsed onto the road, with her head held in between her hands, shaking her head vigorously. She was muttering something. An alarmed Arnav was immediately by her side and he heard her mumbling something incoherently. He caught her shoulders and shook her. "Khushi! We need to leave!" She looked up at him with a glassy look in her eyes and seemed daze and' NOT here' "Khushi?" She suddenly hugged him. "I failed... They killed Mamma and Papa..." "Khushi, it was over... long ago. Let's go... Besides your parents died in a car crash!" Khushi shook her head against his chest. "They did, but'." "But wh-what?" "It was murder'" she whispered. "What?!" "I was eight...Me, Bhaiyya and Jiji were in Goa..." she said in a strangled whisper. "Goa?" Arnav asked, realizing he was about to find out why she didn't want to go to Goa. "Yes. We were in the car. I wanted ice-cream so Papa had stopped on the road' And I-I-"she said in a hoarse whisper. "Khushi?" "I don't want to talk about it' Some other time please?" Khushi was trembling by now and Arnav held her by the shoulder and they walked towards the light. Half an hour later- Arnav and Khushi had booked into the only available room in Titan Hotel. Payal and Akash had been informed. They would meet the next day at the Piraeus port. |
