Part 6 Confessions I
Khushi froze automatically as soon as she heard Arnav's voice. "Payal is right Khushi... What about me?"
Was he mocking her?! She looked up with wet eyes straight into his and lost herself, forgetting that Payal was there in that room. But moments later she regained her composure and looked him in the eye again. Pasting a smile on her face, she looked at him.
"Wh-What about you? Oh, you take care of your sugar levels Arnavji..." she stuttered.
Payal looked at the duo and could make out the blush on her sister's face. Privacy, was what they needed. With that in mind, she stepped walked out of the room silently.
Arnav saw Payal leave, and made a mental note to thank her. Circling his arms around Khushi's waist, he walked into her so she stumbled back slightly and both of them were inside the room. Arnav let go of Khushi for a moment and closed the French windows behind him. He turned to face her fully.
"You're leaving, aren't you?" he asked.
"Well, Shantivan isn't my home so I am going home..." she said, trying to act non-chalant.
Arnav held her shoulders and shook her. "You're lying!"
"No Arnavji, why would I lie?" she asked, still stubborn. Determined to not have this conversation...
"Yes you ARE lying! You are going back to Lucknow aren't you?" he asked silently, letting go of her.
Khushi stared at him with shock and tried to regain her composure but this time, it weren't just his words that affected her, but his deadly calm was beginning to scare her and so she couldn't find words to say.
"Because of what I did yesterday..." Arnav said softly, with each word he took a step towards her.
So he had done that on purpose had he? Khushi wondered, as she automatically stiffened and said "What happened yesterday? Kuch bhi toh nahi..." she said again and she in turn, went back with each of his steps forward.
"You know what I am talking about..." still stepping ahead
"No I don't" she said firmly.
"So you don't remember the dance?" he asked huskily, having cornered her against the wall and trapping her between his hands
Khushi's eyes were wet. "Oh! Your girlfriend is really pretty! Um, it is a good thing that your break up with Lavanyaji didn't effect you much" she said, and sounded almost strangled, as each word escaped with great difficulty.
"So you don't care..." he said.
Khushi froze. The last time she had lied to this question of his, had been very hurtful for her. Her mind flashed back to the times when he would purposely hurt her and ask her in an extremely taunting tone whether or not she cared.
He watched as her eyes closed and she shuddered, stiff against the wall, trying to maintain as much distance as she could in that little area he had trapped her. She was breathing heavily and he could see her lashes glistening with tears she shed few moments back.
She came up with the most diplomatic answer she could find at the moment. "It doesn't it really matter does it?"
Arnav frowned... What didn't matter? The fact that he had been dancing with Myra or was she just avoiding the question and asking him why her answer mattered. He looked at her, and read the anxiety in her eyes...
Khushi saw confusion settle on Arnav's face and then he looked at her and groaned mentally as she saw realization dawn in them. He had seen through her tactics! He leaned closer to her and her breath hitched. "Yes. It matters..."
She looked at him questioningly. And he obliged. "It matters to me what your answer is... What you think about me..." He leaned closer, so close that a hair-width gap separated them and continued. "What you feel about me..." he whispered.
She looked up at him, and Arnav saw different emotions flit through her... Confusion, realization, resistance, and then finally firm resolve.
She pushed him away and said in choked whisper. "It doesn't... and it shouldn't... I ought to leave now..."
She rushed to the door and was about to step out of the room when she heard him. A whisper so soft, that she would have missed if she had stepped out.
"Don't go...Please?"
