Chapter 16- I'm here for you
"You know you could have gone with the others for a tour around the city, you've never been here before.. you should have! I know the city already.. and I'd rather visit places that mean something to me, than waste the half a day I have left on the tour, but you should have gone with the others, you'll be wasting your time with me. I mean its just gonna be me and whichever crazy friends of mine I manage to track down. I hadn't let anyone know im coming, I didn't think I would have time to visit.. hope atleast someone is home.. and I hope its not too late.. is 7:30 late in india? I don't remember been a long time!"
'Yea 7:30 is late in nun-land, chill your fine.'
"Yea, you are right, what am I thinking anyway.. I remember we used to play on the streets till late in the night.. and during the summer holidays past mid night, when finally our mums would drag us away.."
'Past midnight playing eh.. but weren't you in india when you were only little, like 10 or something?'
"Yea, I left after just turning 11 but, regardless we used to play just outside my house.. and there were a lot of us, some of the older kids too.. and my brother would sometimes join in too.. and
Plus my mum is quite cool.. and since we didn't have any school she didn't mind me staying out knowing I had lots of people around me, and for the older kids mumma was their favourite and me ofcourse… so I was always well looked after.. and because of me they used to play with my friends too.. but the last I spoke to juhi she let me know that none of the kids from the new generation go outside to play anymore.. they are all stuck at home studying or playing online..how disappointing is that? I mean that phase of my life is one of the fondest memory of my childhood so far, and arg those kids don't know what they are missing out on. Did you ever play out on the street in your childhood?"
'Umm no…' he said sheepishly.. 'I was more of a video games kind of guy, and other than that.. I went to sports clubs.. or all of the houses I lived in growing up had tennis courts and swimming pools so I never quite felt the need to go out and play on the streets.'
"Look at you, poor rich kid syndrome, never realised the importance of such a thrilling experience.. haha don't worry we'll play today k.. if I even manage to find one of my buddies.. for old times sakes.. but then you wouldn't even know any of the indian street games that all children play but don't ya worry I'll teach you huh.. but careful there aren't any electronic scoreboards and people are cheaters so you better keep a track of your own score if you are to have any chance in winning.. and just to let you know, I used to be the best.. always the captain of the team and always the one to win." Riddhima finished teasing armaan and brooding about herself. They were on their way to riddhima's old neighbourhood where she grew up in as a child. She was still in touch with many of her friends from those days, even after all these years and even after all this distance between them, but it was quite expected if someone knew riddhima, because if she had let someone be a part of her life, and if she likes someone enough… she'll always make sure that they remain in her life forever, she knew how to keep relations better than she herself thought she was able to.
~~~~~~~
So after a few hours of catchup with people from her old neighbourhood, they were now at the airport just waiting in line for customs to take place.
Armaan was really lost in the thoughts of all that had happened when he accompanied her. She was the princess of the locality he could tell.. Everyone knew her, old and young.. and everyone loved her. She had a couple of the younger boys following her after dark.. guys whom riddhima had herself told him to be like younger brothers to be back in the day, but now it seems they were all taller than her.. and felt the need to protect her. All were also encouraged by the aunties to do so, knowing the Delhi streets to not be so safe, and then now she was visiting and not even a local, so she was more of a target. It was interesting to him, that his presence near her meant nothing to them. They couldn't trust him even after being introduced by riddhima as her friend, although her friends had grilled her about the 'friends' status.. but she had taken it in good spirits.. he guessed she was aware that was coming, to be honest he should have expected the same. Here he was a guy travelling with her from London for a wedding and then coming to see her old home and meet her childhood friends.. he could really see where they were all coming from and how it looked like.. he only wished that the aunties didn't judge riddhima on what they thought the both of them shared.. But it didn't look like the aunties that riddhima was close to doubted her for even a second after her explanations.. but there were other people in the periphery he had noticed to be staring at the commotion she and her friends were making and probably what he guessed was gossiping. But she hadn't even noticed those people to take offence. And Armaan couldn't blame her.. her attention was already struggling to keep up with all the people in front of her, catching up with older friends.. meeting new people and trying to guess who some of the kids that had grown up so drastically over the years were.
But when she was kidnapped by her girlfriends he was left with the boys.. After general introductions and information exchanged about each other's professions… He had just randomly asked the guys if any one of them had dated Basket back in the day.. He wasn't surprised with a resounding no, as they had been pretty young.. but he was even more surprised with a resounding yes to his unasked question where they all confessed themselves that they all had at one point or another had a small or big crush on her.. which she till this day was completely unaware of.
One guys story was particularly captivating.. he had described the exact moment when he started to have feeling for her. Apparently as part of the summer holidays she and a few of her friends would do art classes and in her case and this guy had signed up for a dancing class too.. only she was the only accomplished dancer amongst all of the other kids who showed up to dance. The teacher also a young college student herself teaching just the popular Bollywood dances had taken upon herself to teach the rest of the class a simple easy dance and then spend the last half hour with just Riddhima and dancing their hearts out. .infact she wasn't even taught in that time.. she was just told to copy whatever the teacher was doing and they both broke a sweat and enjoyed it immensely whilst the other kids in the class, would all sit around and watch them both perform.
Anyway.. according to this one guy.. preran had recounted his memory where riddhima and her teacher had poured there soul into 'dola re dola' from devdas.. and then in the end whilst they were spinning uncontrollably to the music her hair band had gone spinning out and had landed on this guys lap.. and he had looked at her then with her hair lose spinning still not caring about her hair, her hairband.. and just spinning and spinning not feeling dizzy he could tell.. and he noticed her smile.. it was the brightest he had ever seen and in that moment he was mesmerised by her.. and she had taken place in her heart as his first crush.. and for that reason and that reason only she will always be the most special girl in his life, other than the fact that she has remained to be an amazing friend over all these years. Only he hadn't been able to tell her this even once.. back then he was shy and then she moved away shortly after and even afterwards.. they had maintained a good friendship and he had never been able to tell her.
Realising the way she had touched so many peoples heart in that aspect of her life made him realise just how special she was, not just for him or Rahul and muskaan and to her family but to anyone she had interacted with.. But then again he smiled looking at her filling her customs form that he was just like that guy preran.. shying of telling her about his feelings for her.. he had done the same back in high school.. being afraid to tell her all that he wanted to… he felt that she was too good for him.. and now he realised that another guy had felt the same way too. She was just like that.. she was too good.. for him, for that preran guy.. she probably needs a saint to come into her life and whisk her away.. that's what he felt..
Having come out of the epiphany he looked back at her and frowned.. he hadn't realised but she had been picked out by an airport official out of line.. and now she looked uncomfortable having a conversation.. but what bothered him more was that if she was that uncomfortable why couldn't she have got his attention.. but ofcourse she was an independent woman who didn't require anyone's help. It was almost unwanted with her.
'Hi is there a problem here, officer?' asked armaan barging into their conversation.
'And you are?' the officer replied.
'I'm her friend and we're travelling together.' Armaan saw the man's expression change to disappointment.
'Nothing beta, we were just talking about her life back in London.' And he smiled a little at riddhima.
'Well then we should be going, come riddhima.' Said amraan and just pulled at her hand.
……….
"what was all that about, what did that guy want from you?' he asked once out of earshot.
'I don't know, he was just extremely nosey asking me questions like my age, my marital status, my job, my salary and god forbid if I ask what's his business in all of this. Then he would throw his status and his job to protect the country in my face. I don't understand how he was saving the country by poking his long nose in my business though.. and then you came along.' She was cut short by armaan, she still had more to complain about. That man hadn't let her speak and she needed to vent.
'He was just having fun at your expense… that pig.. he thought you were a lone girl travelling yourself and you were an easy target.. that ass calling himself a servant of the country.. all he was doing was harassing a young girl.. cheap bas***d' finished armaan as he gathered what was going on, one of the few things that irks him about the country. They have no respect for women…
'Oye calm down..' she said grabbing his arm.
But he just shrugged his arm of her grip and replied pointing his finger at her 'and you.. you couldn't have called me over.. ?'
And to his surprise he saw her smile.. what he didn't know was that she was thinking about their friendship.. she'd be the first to admit that she didn't have all the faith and trust in him over the years that she did now.. and the short amount of time that they had really been 'friends' he had been that.. just a true friend.. like now, he was throwing a tantrum at not being given the opportunity to save his friend un-comfort. He had proved it that friendship was not about who you've known the longest. It's about who walked into your life, and said "I'm here for you".
~~~~~~~
the line 'im here for you'.. is really going to be highlighted.. in both their lives although one more than other.. but regardless..
i cant do cliched romances partly because i'm so cynical about them myself and partly because whenever i write i'm in a terrible mood..

Chapter 17- simple moments..
It had been 3 weeks since they had landed back in London and riddhima's course had started, she was also working part time in a sleep clinic on certain nights assisting the experimenter just for experience and also because she found the study interesting.. and the fact that it helped pay the bills was a bonus. However it didn't pay them all and so she had managed to get herself a couple of nannying jobs aswell. One was in the building where she was living itself, whilst the other was more closer to uni.. either way public transport and walking was more than sufficient… But she was busy, oh boy was she busy! What with her own study commitment, then the lab, and her jobs aswell and then just the general looking after home and all.. cleaning, cooking, laundry etc. She realised she was exhausted, and she hadn't even done any pleasure reading or seen a movie in ages. Wondering if this was what adult life was going to be like.. she felt her heart drop.. this was what she wanted, an independent life. But it was all getting too much, she was missing her family and her friends a lot now. She hadn't even seen armaan in a long time. His and her schedules were completely different these days. But she knew he was around.. probably that knowledge was the only thing keeping her sane these past few days.. that someone was there, that she wasn't completely ostracised from the social world...that if she were to die her body would be found.. not in 10 days when the neighbours smell the faint odour but sooner because someone was there in her life..
On a more serious note she knew he was around because food she had at home including packet of chips would keep disappearing. His clothes would be thrown around in the bathroom, his electronic shaver was left on the bathroom counter, and the xbox player, the one he himself had installed had different game covers thrown around it whilst she managed to sit on its controller everytime she sat on the couch. She often wondered if she was living with him, but he also use to shop the groceries for her sometimes, or bring over home cooked food from keerthi didi's. But she hadn't run into him yet in a whole week, although last night she did hear the tv, but she was way too tired to actually get outside from the room, off her bed to go see him and say hi.. instead she fell asleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was Sunday… Saturday and Friday night were spent with her nanying.. she also managed to finish most of her assignments, she just needed to read on the topic of journal articles before Monday and then she was able to celebrate her Sunday night with a nice movie and maybe pizza since she was in no mood to cook tonight.
Just when she was planning her day, armaan had stopped by with his laptop and files in hand. He just shrugged to the confused look she gave him.. when she opened the door to him, and moved inside to sit on the couch with a thud.. close to where she was sitting herself doing her reading.
So, she just took her place again and continued with her reading.. and for the next couple of hours they sat in silence doing their work, whilst sharing a pack of doritos with salsa. The munch of the doritos was the only sound in the room for a long time. On the outside it could be seen as a very weird scene, yet to them it provided a homely feel, something that was much craved what with them both staying away from parents. Riddhima in particular felt peace by the end of the night.. her anxiety and home sickness feeling from the long week finally leaving her. They had even managed to see a movie after finishing their respective work but it was back to work the next morning and back to the same old routine life again. But you know the lesson here is you've got to snatch moments of happiness and peace when you can to keep your sanity alive.. because this is life and its hectic to say the least.
~~~~~~~~
because my life is hectic in real life..and although nothing much had happened in this chapter on the surface.. the subliminal message of their relationship on closer analysis is something worth noting.. atleast to me.
anyway there's this for now.. and then another chapter which is going to have snippets of their life to move the story forward whilst still establishing their relationship.. but afterwards there may be some serious stuff.. 😊
