Shyam looked at them in disgust. His actions seemed to have caused an opposite reaction. He wanted Khushi to accept him and not run into Arnav's arms.
"Dekhthe hain, Saale saab.[Let's see, Saale saab.] Let's see what you can do to stop me when I am making Khushi mine."
He dialled a number and waited for some one to attend his call.
On the final ring, he heard a man's voice. "Shyam saab?"
"Main tumse milna chahtha hoon. Ek ganta mein hamari usual jaga ponchao. Intezaar karna mujhe achcha nahi lagtha." [I want to meet you. come to our usual place within an hour. I hate waiting.]
"Ji, saab. Main aaonga." [Yes, sir. I will come.]
He had an evil smile on his lips as he disconnected the call and pocketed the phone.
Arnav took Khushi to Shantivan. He knew that she was upset as she had to leave behind the two people whom she really knew. He was able to understand her unspoken fears. He parked the car and got down.
He extended his palm towards her and she accepted his hand.
"I will never let you go," he eased her fear.
She gave him a sad smile and leaned on his shoulder.
"Andar chalein?" [Shall we go in?]
She nodded.
Anjali opened the door and she screamed in happiness.
"Chote' Khushji'"
Arnav looked at his sister and rolled his eyes. "Di'?"
Anjali hugged the both of them and shouted for the rest of the family in the top of her voice. "Nani, Payalji, Mamiji, OPji,'"
She called everyone. She didn't even leave behind the goat Lakshmi.
Everyone was alarmed. They barged into the living room and asked if she was fine. Then they looked at the reason of all the commotion and their mouths fell open.
Nani was the first to recover. "Chote, Khushi bitya ko andar le aayiye." [Chote, bring Khushi bitya in.]
They hugged her and welcomed her.
"Khushi, you did a great job by coming," Payal said. "You saved Arnavji. He was a complete devdas."
"Bhabi!" Arnav winced.
Everyone in the room other that Payal were shocked.
"Chote, tum Payalji ko bhabi kaha?" Anjali asked him. [Chote, did you call Payal as bhabi?]
"Iss mein kya badi baath, di?" he asked as he shrugged his shoulders. [What is the big thing here, di?]
"Nahi. Nahi. Kuch nahi. You are talking well and that itself is a big thing."
"Di, aap bhi na."
A few minutes after their reunion, Siddharth and his father made a surprise appearance. Arnav introduced Prakash to his family and spent some time with them.
Siddharth took Arnav aside when the others were busy in their own discussion.
"Shyam ko kya hua?" he asked Arnav once they were out of everyone's earshot. [What happened to Shyam?]
"Di ne kaha ki woh kisi kaam ko lekar busy hai." [Di told me that he is busy with some work.]
"Kab aayega?" [When will he come?]
"Patha nahi." [I don't know.]
"What will you tell Anjali?"
Arnav rubbed his eye brows and said, "I don't even want to think about it. But somehow it is inevitable. She has to know. I'll think of something."
A small pause later, he asked, "You trust Khushi, right?"
"Siddharth, I can't change our past. All I can say is that the same thing will not happen again. I will not lose her this time. She is too valuable. As far as Shyam is concerned, I will not let him near Khushi."
"What about Anjali?"
"Khushi and di are my life. I will not let anything happen to either of them."
He nodded as a thoughtful expression crossed his face.
"Siddharth, is something bothering you?"
He put up a fake smile and said, "No."
"I know how difficult it is to leave her after spending one whole year with her. Trust me. I will take care of her. You are always welcome in our house. You are a part of our life."
Siddharth placed his hand on Arnav's shoulder and said, "I trust you, Arnav."
"Shall we go in?"
"Tum jao. Main dho minute mein aatha hoon." [You go. I'll join you in two minutes.]
Khushi searched for Siddharth. When he was nowhere to be found, she asked Arnav. He told her that he was standing near his car.
Khushi saw him holding a rose in his hand. He rubbed his hand gently over it. He closed his eyes and inhaled the smell.
"Siddhu, yahaan kya kar rahe ho?" she asked even though she saw what he did. [Siddhu, what are you doing here?]
He hid the rose and said, "Kuch nahi." [Nothing.]
"Waise main tumse'"
Her voice trailed off and her eyes were fixed on something behind his shoulder. Siddharth turned around to see what made her stop in the middle.
At the same time, Anjali came out of the house and said, "Shyamji, you have come."
Khushi curled her fingers around Siddharth's upper arm and stood close to him. He clenched his fist and looked at Shyam.
"Andar ayiye [Come inside] ," Anjali told her husband. Then she looked at the other two and said, "Aap dhono bhi." [Both of you too.]
When Arnav saw his sister along with Shyam, he looked around for Khushi. She was not there. He was about to go in search of her. At that time, Siddharth and Khushi walked in.
Arnav heaved a sigh of relief. He looked at Khushi to see if she was fine. She nodded when he saw her.
"Rani Saheba, you haven't introduced me to your new friends," Shyam told her.
"Naya nahi, Mr. Shyam," Siddharth told him as he hid his anger. "Puraani' Bahut puraani dhost. Hain na, Anjali?" [Not new, Mr Shyam. Old. Very old friend. Isn't it, Anjali?]
"Haan, Shyamji. He is an old friend."
"I am Siddharth and this is my father, Prakash Raina."
"Nice to meet the both of you," Shyam told them as he shook Prakash's hands. His gaze then fell on Khushi. "Arey Khushiji, aap aagayi. [Arey Khushiji, you came.] I thought you would make my Saale saab wait a little more."
"Chote and Khushiji look great together. Right, Shyamji?" This was from Anjali.
Shyam stared at Khushi from head to toe and she felt uncomfortable. She stepped a little closer to Siddharth.
Siddharth noticed it and hated that man. "Khushi, you told me that you are tired. Why don't you go to your room?"
Arnav had also seen him gazing at his wife and stood in front of her.
"Haan, Khushi," he told her. "Shall we go?"
She nodded.
"Khushiji," Shyam stopped her. "Aap ki haath mein kya hua?" [What happened to your hands?] He turned to his wife and asked, "Rani Saheba, yeh bandage kya hai?" [Rani Saheba, what is this bandage?]
Both Arnav and Siddharth clenched and unclenched their fist in anger.
"Choti si accident," Khushi managed to say. [A small accident.]
"Waise bhi Shyam, meri Khushi ne aap ke baarein mein kuch nahi bathaaya," Siddharth taunted him. "Woh hamesha Arnav ke baarein mein baath karthi rehthi hai." [However Shyam, Khushi hasn't told me anything about you. She always talks about Arnav.]
"Toh kya karen, Siddharthji? [What to do, Siddharthji?] I don't stay at home often. I should change that. From now on, I think I will stay at home with whom I love."
Anjali smiled and the two men near Khushi fumed because they knew that he spoke about Khushi. Shyam could have been killed by the amount of daggers their eyes threw at him.
"It was nice meeting you," Shyam told Siddharth and his father. "I am a bit tired and I think I should retire. Good night everyone."
The others left, too. Prakash had a call to make and he was busy with it. Only Siddharth, Khushi and Arnav remained.
"Where the hell did Anjali find a two-timing idiot like him?" Siddharth asked Arnav. "He had the audacity to talk about Khushi in front of everyone and the others thought he was talking about Anjali."
"He was dadi's choice."
"I will surely kill your dadi if I see her."
"Tough competition. There is a queue. I am standing in front of you in the queue."
"Who else in the queue?"
"Akash and Payal."
"I hope you guys don't beat me to it."
Khushi's hand had turned cold and Siddharth felt it.
"It's alright, Khushi. He won't hurt you again. Arnav and I will take care of you."
She slowly removed her hands from his arm and nodded.
Arnav received a call from Akash and he stepped aside to talk with him.
Khushi took a deep breath to control herself. She found Siddharth looking at her and gave him a faint smile.
"You okay?"
"Tum hain na mere liye. [You are there for me.] Always okay." As they walked to the door, she asked, "You won't get angry if I ask you something, right?"
"How can I be angry with my Khushi?"
"Why don't you start a new life, Siddhu?"
He stopped dead on his tracks.
"Patha hai ki tum us ladki ko bahut pyaar kartha hai. Lekin zindagi sirf ek baar hain na? [I know that you love that girl very much. But life is just once.] You can make anybody happy. Unlike a few others, you have a golden heart. Why don't you try again, Siddhu?"
"Zindagi bhi ek baar. Pyaar bhi ek baar. Dhoosra baar chance hi nahi." [Life is once and so is love. Second time, no chance.]
"Siddhu, tum'"
He interrupted her, "Khushi, you didn't think of anybody other than Arnav even when you had no memory. How do you expect me to be different? Batao."
She didn't have an answer.
"Main yeisa nahi kar saktha. Kabhi nahi. [I can't do that. Never.] She is the only one for me. Nobody else can take her place."
She hugged him and said, "Mujhe patha hai, Siddhu. Mujhe patha ki woh ladki kaun hai." [I know, Siddhu. I know who the girl is.]
His voice was serious when he said, "Khushi, this is not the time to joke."
"Main mazaak nahi kar raha hoon. Sach mein mujhe patha hai. Guest house mein tumari college year book dekhi thi maine. Uss main tum dhono ka photo tha." [I am not joking. I really know. I found your college year book in the guest house. Both your photos were there in it.]
"I thought I threw away everything after I found out that she was married."
"Looks like one survived."
He looked at her in the eyes and said, "Kisi ko bathana math." [Don't tell anyone.]
"Nahi bathaongi. Waise woh bahut hoobsurat thi." [I won't tell. She was very beautiful.]
"Patha hai," he said with a smile. [I know.]
Siddharth hugged her for a while and accepted her warmth. He had been there for her when she was heart broken and she was there for him when she needed him. He accepted her support.
Arnav returned and saw the two in each other's arms. He looked at the two with a lot of pride and love.
Siddharth finally let her go and said, "Take care of yourself and Arnav. I'll call you daily. Agar koi problem ho, mujhe bathaa do. [If there is any problem, tell me.] I am there for you." He placed his hand on her cheek and said, "Tum meri aadat pad gayi. [You have become a habit.] I am going to miss you a lot."
"Main bhi." [Me too.]
"Zyaada tang nath karna." [Don't be too naughty.]
She smiled.
He kissed her forehead and said, "Love you, sweetheart."
"Love you too."
Prakash finished his call and came to bid goodbye to Khushi and Arnav.
"Khushi, take care." He told Arnav, "Meri beti ko yahaan chod ke jaa raha hoon. [I am leaving my daughter here.] Take care of her. Don't hurt her ever again."
Khushi hugged him and said, "I will miss you, papa."
"I will miss you too, beta."
The father and son got into their car and drove off with a heavy heart. They felt as if they left behind their happiness in Shantivan.
Khushi looked at them until the car turned around a corner and went out of sight. She fared no better. She felt as if a part of her suddenly went missing.
