Chapter 16

Aman's lips touched Anjali's lightly making her shiver. She clutched at her saree, controlling her raging emotions. He caressed her lower lip with his, sucking at them lightly. He moved his hand from her face to the back of her neck, bringing her lips closer. He deepened the kiss and felt her responding, finally. She glided her hands from his chest to the nape of his neck and contributed to the passionate kiss. He pressed his lower body to hers, making her jerk back and she pushed him away.

"I am married" she said panting

"No, you are not" he countered smiling.

"What?!?"

"You have already signed the divorce papers"

"When?"

"The other night when I had come to meet you, then" he had placed himself close to her yet again. She pushed him back and said "What right did you have to take such a big decision?"

"Don't I have enough right on you?" Aman brushed his knuckles across her cheeks.

"Mr. Raizada" Dr. Mehta called out to him. "Mrs. Raizada's condition is very critical. Sign these forms. We can either save the mother or the baby"

"Save the mother, please" Arnav ticked and signed in the required boxes, handing the papers back to the nurse.

Nani moved to him and bit out "Good. Or else you would have been a father as bad as yours." She was shocked when she saw him laughing silently.

"I already have been worse than him in fact" and he walked away from the hospital.

*Flashback*

15 months back

"Aman get Di's signatures on these papers. By the way she isn't at Shantivan at the moment. She is in my other house"

"Sir, can I go after office, on my way home?"

"Yes of course"

Aman arrived at his boss' other house, inserted the spare key that he always had and went straight to the room where he knew Anjali ma'am would be. He knocked at the door but got no response. He knocked again and he finally pushed open the door. He saw Anjali ma'am standing at the window, her hair rising and falling in the soft breeze, tears rolling down her cheeks.

"Ma'am" Aman started cautiously. Anjali turned around and he took a step back at her bloodshot eyes. Before he could register what was happening, Anjali run towards him and hugged him tightly, sobbing in his neck.

"Why'why'I am not'loved? Am'I that'bad?" she spoke between sobs. He brought her face before his to wipe away her tears. Placing a kiss on her forehead he spoke "You are the best. You are beautiful. You are loved. The one who doesn't love you is a fool"

"Sach?" Anjali asked.

"Sach"

They really didn't realise when their lips met and they were on the bed.

*End of Flashback*

"I had told you the next morning that it was a mistake and I shouldn't have done that!" Anjali's eyes were downcast but were brought to Aman's eye level as he lifted her face to him.

"Mistake is done once, not twice" He ran his thumb over her lips.

*Flashback*

They laid next to each other panting. Anjali turned her head to him and said "I have never been loved like this before"

"No, you have never been loved like this before" and he started kissing her again.

*End of Flashback*

"Where is he?" Anjali changed the topic.

"I really don't know what the Hong Kong government does to a foreigner with a fake passport, fake American dollars and cocaine" Anjali's mouth dropped open and he captured it with his. He broke the kiss and rested his forehead over hers.

"I love you, have always loved you from the past seven years. But you have hurt me" Both the statements shocked her "When did I hurt you?"

"Dev is my son and you hid this from me? And don't lie because Shyam wasn't even here when you conceived."

"I was and I am scared"

"Of what?"

"Of being happy again. Whenever I am happy the people around me get hurt. I am a bad omen omen"

"No Anjali. You have been with the wrong guy so it doesn't mean that you are bad. The circumstances were bad"

"So that means you are a good guy?" Anjali teased to lighten the atmosphere.

"Try me"

3 days later

Arnav sat on a bench surrounded by rose bushes and a huge tree before him. He had gone away from the hospital because he knew that Khushi didn't need him. In fact nobody needed him. She had everyone with her. He wanted to be there, to mourn the loss of his child with Khushi, to support her. But he knew he had no right to mourn the death of a child that he had planned some months back. Hence, he had come here, to the memories of his mother, the only thing that he had now, memories.

He was not going to show his face to those whom he had hurt. He had signed the divorce papers so it was up to Khushi to decide what had to be done with their relationship. She was free now. He had transferred everything to her name, rendering himself penniless. Hence, her future was secured. He felt something press against the back of his palm. He looked at his hand to see them covered with milky white ones. His gaze travelled from her hand to her face.

Khushi sat before him in a pastel peach salwar kameez, the breeze playing with her loose hair. Her eyes were focused on his hand resting on the bench. She looked ethereal. If not for her hand resting over his, he would have thought that he is imagining her. He wanted to hug her, share her sorrow. But he knew that he couldn't.

"Khushi"

"Arnav"

They spoke together. Although Arnav had taken her name many times, it was for the first time that she had uttered his name. In that moment he knew that he would die if he didn't hear his name being taken by her at least a million times every day.

She continued to look down and spoke "Arnav, I want you to come back home" He slipped his hand from under hers and clasped his hands together, interweaving his fingers.

"I can't. I don't deserve it"

"Don't you think Nani ji deserves to have her grandson back? You cannot take away a part of her family. Don't you think Di deserves to have her brother with her? You cannot take her soul away from her. Don't you think Akash bhai ji deserves to have his brother with him? You cannot take away his pillar from him. Don't you think I deserve to have my husband with me? You cannot take away my other half from me. Don't you think our child deserves to have his father? You cannot take away his father from him"

Arnav held his breath while she spoke, her eyes still downcast. But when she spoke about herself, she looked at him. When she spoke about his child, she covered his interwoven hands with hers.

"Our child?"

"Yes, our child"

Aman entered the rose bushes from a small pathway holding a bundle of white in his hands. He gently placed the baby in Arnav's outstretched hands, begging to have a look at his child.

"My son?" Arnav alternated his look between Khushi and his son. Khushi nodded a yes.

"Sir, I shall take your leave now" Aman didn't want to intrude in their private moment.

"Aman thank you" sincerity poured out of Arnav's mouth.

"Sir you said a few months back that I owed you one"

"Not one Aman, many"

"Sir, at the moment I want just one. No, make it two"

"You will get whatever you want" Arnav assured Aman and he went away from there.

Arnav turned to look at Khushi who was looking back at him "How did you know I will be here?"

"I remember each and every word that you have spoken to me since'since I was brought back from the hospital" Arnav recalled the long hours that he had spent talking to Khushi while she sat next to him. He had shared each and every day, each and every moment of his life with her. She even knew his deepest and darkest secret, the fear of being left alone.

"Come back" Khushi requested again.

"Why Khushi? Why are you so good? What have I done to get a person like you?"

"Amma says everyone deserves a second chance. She gave me a second chance at cooking after I had burned down half of the house once"

"But Khushi'"

Khushi took away the baby from his hand, got up and questioned with a hint of hurt in her voice "Don't you want to be with us?"

Arnav stood up too "Of course I want to be with you, for every single second of my existence"

"Then come" Khushi turned away from him and started walking in the direction of the car she came in from.

"Khushi" he called out to her making her turn "Have you forgiven me?"

"What was there to forgive about?" she turned back and resumed to walk.

When Khushi Kumari Gupta forgave, she forgave completely and when she loved, she loved unconditionally.
