My friend had told me about you. Expect some serious stalking. 😆

Maya❤️,
You know there is no way I can disagree with anything you have to say. And when what you say is so rightly said I can't help but love you and respect you even more.

V I read your post again...on the thought that perhaps i was mistaken...but the title of the post and the following language indicates that you have an ideal in mind...
and that in and of itself is a handbook how to be one...
then the language with calling readers trolls...yes as good and bad as we come we are all your readers and to name call that is self defeating...
I am not sure how old or for that matter how experieced a writer the ones in the froum are...but this medium of immediete...responce is a new one...enjoy it...As and avenue to whet your talent...Dont get caught up with the highly negative or the highly positive...they both are misleading...
and as a final note I reiterate let your writing do the talking...if infact the reader has misunderstood your writing and it is after review you find it is the readers misconception then best is to ignore...and write for those who do...
when you getdown to dialogue with someone who is wontanly invading that space then you are entertaing your so called "troll".
While the medium gives you the immediate audience and a good platform to assess your skills it also sets you up for the other side or the down side...of being an auther...and mind you this is but a mild window to the real...
I have favourite authers that I visit...and read...and at times remain silent...at times put down a Hi i was here but have nothing to say...or if i have something good i do and if it is something that is of value and it can be positive or negative i dialogue with the auther depending is she or he is open for that...and I see many of you here...So to you all a thumbs up you are doing a grand job and I love how your works are progressing and i am in awe of the raw talent abound...I donot wish to name as it would be very unfair to the ones i have not read...(due to my limitations) or who write but are not my cup of tea...
But to anyone who writes...and have the chutzpah to exhibit online...there is the audience in me that aplauds you...My sincer wish is tht you grow in this experience and if you find that indeed you have a gift...a gift that is something others will recognise that you all do and will publish one day...and that I as your reader have been a small part of that journey...

I see the number of likes as a barometer to gauge interest level. If I see LIKES going down over an extended period of time, I means I need to take a critical look at my work or maybe recognize that the story has reached a natural end and that it is time to start something new.

Ok i would have gone through all the pages but i need to go offline soon

Being a reader i would say that I being a college student do not get much time to post long analysed comments in each and every update but i do post analysed comments when i do have time...Mostly i read the updates either late night or early morning...which results in a huge number of pms being unread...As i love to read and i do try to at least comment a line even if i have less time...The writers here are so damn awesome that i do not want to miss any piece of work by them...I know it is my fault and the writers do deserve analysed comments as it make them happy and even i prefer commenting like that as the comment given by me also satisfies me...but Time is the only factor here which is responsible for one line comments

I truly apologize to the writers for my short comments..put the blame on me😉

love

I stay away from prescriptions of what it means to be a good writer or a good reader.

Every style of writing has its readers and readers come in all shades, even the 50 grey shades.

Your customer base, in this case readers, will react in a variety of ways. Some may be wordy others single-worded. There is no right reader or wrong reader, There is a reader and a non-reader.

As writer, you know it feels good to find out how big is your readership, so your natural need to hear more from readers. It feels great as a writer to get validation and acknowledgment. In that sense, even single word is great to know someone read my work. If you are a silent reader, you must know that the writer will never find out about you and if that is what you plan to achieve, so be it.

Its a free world, there is no compulsion to behave in XYZ way when it comes to totally voluntary activities such as Writing or Reading or Watching TV (hear the many topics on how IPK fans should behave and i would apply the same logic).

Interesting topic for discussion!

As a person who is predominantly a reader on this forum, and who really enjoys a Good read 😊, I feel the following are some of the traits which a 'good' reader could possess:

1) As you rightly said, one who really reads what the writer has put up. Takes time to soak in the plot nuance, characterization, turn of phrase, imagery, attention to detail. I feel the whole experience becomes a lot more worthwhile if the piece is savored as you would a delectable bit of Toblerone or Guylian chocolate- take the time to absorb all the aspects 😊.

2) Taking the time to 'Like' or Comment if the story touched/ impressed/ entertained them- this cements the bond between the writer and the reader. But I do feel knee jerk 'likes' or proforma 'Nice Update' comments just for the sake of commenting, are counter productive. If the reader feels a particular update didn't really live up to the standards the author may have set from their previous writing, I guess what is needed is a polite comment expressing what the reader really felt. Most of the really good authors anyway appreciate constructive criticism, and there is no point fueling the ego of those others who mandate only praise!

3) Further to the above, 'constructive criticism' by definition means identifying what worked well as well as what didn't. Witty pot shots and sarcasm cannot form part of a constructive critique. I have seen reader comments using terms which seemed to be comments on the writer's personality and behavior rather than their writing. Definitely to be avoided, unless the reader is spoiling for a slanging match 😊

Lastly, would like to put forward that the good writer/ good reader discussion is 2 sides of the same coin, really. Good readers can encourage the writer with their constructive response, while a good writer can generate and nurture interest from the readers by being open to feedback. As to who comes first- that's the chicken and egg situation again, isn't it !!

Cheers...
