She heard the doorbell just as she was putting the finishing touches to the pasta…they always ate pasta when they met for movies….she preffered Chinese but Arnav loved Italian and she preffered cooking and eating what he liked…..She put down the ladle and covered the pasta, removed her apron and went to greet him at the door.

Arnav smiled at her when she opened the door and walked in like a man who was very familiar with his surroundings….gone was the suited-booted look from the office….with Khushi, the business tycoon ASR became the casual, fun loving Arnav…dressed in a simple sweatshirt and jeans!! He sniffed the delicious aroma wafting around the house…"Hmmm….let me guess…Lasagna…"

Khushi smiled at him and nodded. "Ya….lets go have it Arnav…"she said leading him to the dining area….it was decorated with dim lights from the lamps she always lit at night…the small specks of illumination shone like stars in the night sky…..

"You know Khushi…..this is by far the most peaceful place I've ever seen….it's tranquility makes me forget all my workload!!"

Khushi beamed at him and went to the kitchen to get the food….meanwhile Arnav set the table for them…soon they were polishing off plates of finger-licking lasagna and bowls of delicious brownie sundaes (Arnav's being sugarfree of course). Thay chatted about everything from politics (Khushi hated this), to fashion (Khushi detested this), from Movies (Arnav rolled his eyes), to Cricket (Arnav groaned…he hated cricket).

"I really feel Khushi that cricket is hyped out of proportion….i mean I understand it's a great sport but the lunacy behind it is something which escapes me…people are crazy about it…half my staff falls ill if there is an India Pakistan match and the other half which turn up remain glued to the commentary…"

Khushi frowned…"Ya…people are crazy about it agreed but that's only because it is such a fascinating game….cricket's hype is not unwarranted…it is a highly exciting game in which the odds change every minute….it's a thriller ride that holds the suspense till the last ball…." and they continued the argument.

Arnav always wondered how he and Khushi were such close friends…they had absolutely nothing in common…they loved different things in life…their tastes, their habits couldn't have been more different…..nature wise they were poles apart…he was like a volcano ready to erupt and she was the pure snow that calmed people down…and yet they were as thick as thieves….relationships definitely manifested in weird ways…and theirs, he was sure, was unique.

Khushi began to clear the table and Arnav went to the movie room to arrange everything…in five minutes he was joined by khushi who was carrying two cups….black coffee for him and a caramel latte for herself….she put them down on the table, turned off the lights, and settled on the recliner next to arnav as the credits rolled by…..within ten minutes both had kept their cups away…after about half an hour…Khushi was leaning into arnav and arnav had his arms wrapped around khushi's shoulder….they were quite comfortable watching a movie this way…there was no awkwardness between them….no formality…they just did what they felt like and the other never minded…they were free with each-other in a way they could never be anyone else….when they holed up watching movies this way it was like the world didn't exist…it was only this room…a movie playing on the screen and Khushi nestled in Arnav's arms.

They were midway through the movie when their serene world was sharply interrupted by the shrill ringing of Arnav's phone. Khushi paused the movie and looked at her watch…."Who'd be calling you at 11:45 at night??"

Arnav shrugged and picked his phone….it was his Di…

"Hello…ya Di…." he heard his sister's hysterical voice from the other end…

"Di…what happened….tell me…"

Khushi watched as Arnav expression went from nonchalance to worry to tension to shock and to utter sadness….she looked as he continued to talk…

"Yes Di…I'm coming immediately…Di…Di…Di…" Arnav swore as he lost connection…..he tried calling but her phone was switched off….he smashed his phone on the floor in anger…

Khushi looked at Arnav nervously….he was almost on the verge of tears….he looked so helpless….

"Arnav…what's the matter…"

"Khushi…Ma….Ma…."

"What happened to her…??" she said holding his hand…

"I don't know….Di just said Ma was not well….i lost connection before I could ask her what happenend…."

"Don't worry Arnav…everything'll be fine….we should go there immediately….."

Arnav nodded and they both rushed outside….Arnav tossed his keys to Khushi and without saying a word got into the passenger seat….Khushi was shocked….Arnav never allowed her to drive his car…she'd always wanted to…..he must be really upset….Khushi sat in and began to drive….every once in a while she glanced sideway's at him…he was looking out of the window with a defeated expression on his face….Khushi knew how much he loved his mother….he could do anything for her….she'd never met Mrs.Kriya Raizada but the way Arnav talked about her made her sure that she was probably the best woman in the world….she drove faster….ignoring all traffic rules…breaking all signals….all she cared about was taking Arnav to his mother ASAP…..Khushi thanked god for the minimal traffic around….ten minutes later the car screeched outside RM…..

Arnav was lost in his thoughts all through the journey….he was thinking about his mother….she'd already had a small stroke three months back and was under strict medical surveillance… if something happened to her he'd never forgive himself….he remembered all the times his mother cared for him when he fell ill….no…he'd never let anything happen to his mother….so engrossed was he that he didn't even realize when they reached and he only broke from his trance when khushi opened his door and prodded him…..

Like a madman Arnav rushed and raced into the house……when Khushi reached him he was already at the door and was fumbling with the keys….Khushi looked at his hands….they were shaking badly from fear…Khushi calmly took the keys out of his hand and opened the door….they entered into a pitch black hall….the mansion was submerged in darkness….Khushi couldn't see a thing in front of her…she felt Arnav's hand on her own and held his hand firmly…..

Arnav looked about unable to understand this darkness….he'd never seen his house like this….it seemed to be representing the blackness inside his heart….he didn't like it at all and it scared him….his grip on Khushi's hand became tighter and he felt her press his hand comfortingly…..

"Khushi….what is the meaning of all this…"Arnav said in a hoarse whisper…

Khushi rubbed his hand…..she knew she had to be strong for him… "Arnav it's fine….nothing will happen…why don't you go switch on the light's??"

But Arnav wasn't ready to move….he felt as if he was stuck to the ground….

"Khushi…I'm really scared….what if something's happened….Khushi don't leave me and go….please stay here okay…."he pleaded like a two year old asking his mother to sleep with him when he was scared of the dark…

Khushi hugged him and whispered…"I'm always there for you Arnav…I'm not going anywhere…now go switch on the lights….stop behaving like a kid…you're ASR….get your strength back…don't whine like a school-girl….get a grip….everyone needs you ok…" she reprimanded him….her words brought him back to his senses…ya…he had to be strong for his mother…nothing could happen to her…after all he was ASR…he wrote the fates of everyone around him and even God himself was scared to defy his decision….he took a deep breath and went to switch on the light's…..

Khushi shielded her eyes from the bright glare that suddenly pierced her retina….Arnav's eyes watered as his pupils adjusted to the light….he then looked up and what he saw left him shocked…..!!
