Hirani did not make this when he was a top director..Now that Dunki underperformed and his brand of movies are termed outdated,this indeed seems his only option!

I don't why it did take long time for this

Dunki was a terrible film. This film is Hirani’s chance for redeeming himself.

Hirani badly wanted to do a movie with SRK, already the Munnabhai one... but SRK told him he would have to wait maaaany months because he would undergo backsurgery and didn't know yet when he would have recovered (if ever).

After the surgery and his recovering he first shot KHNH and Paheli...and then, VV Chopra (for whom Hirani worked) said something very controversial about Paheli having been chosen for the Oscar-race. SRK told Hirani that he would work with him if Hirani would do it with RedChillies, but Hirani felt obliged to VV Chopra. But then, there was the fall-out with VV Chopra (alleged #metoo incident) and Hirani contacted SRK again who asked him to first come with a script (which took some time).

Dunki wasn't a bad film (but attackable) and given what happened at that time with the criticism and Salaar deliberately taking the same date and pushed into high numbers through cheating, it didn't perform as wished.

Hirani without Vidhu Vinod Chopra won't be able to pull it off.

Chopra had mentored him with the first movie (at least), so, yes, he didn't want to leave that producer...he was made to leave...

Hirani will be busy perfecting the Dada Saheb Phalke movie with Aamir for the next few years.

When I call Dunki a ‘bad’ film, I’m actually calling Hirani and Abhijat Joshi out for their horrendous screenplay. Dunki was a poorly made film and SRK is not liable for its outcome. I know he worked incredibly hard.
