E for... Ek Kambal Kaafi Hai?

"Damn!" he punched the steering wheel furiously.

"Ab hum kya karein?" Khushi asked meekly. (What do we do now?)

He stared at her guiltily. This was not really what he had planned. What he had in mind when they had left home, was a romantic weekend in Nainitaal, just the two of them, without their families who seemed to enjoy cock-blocking right in the middle of their romantic ventures, whether they were in Shaantivan or at the Gupta's.

But what had happened? First, it had started raining midway, and it was raining so hard he wouldn't he shocked to find holes drilled on his SUV's rooftop. Then, slightly ahead, the car had broken down unexpectedly in the middle of the road. And they were still quite far from Nainitaal.

Arnav sighed and raked a hand through his hair. Now, where what to do? Where to go with his moody and pregnant wife? He could certainly not let her spend the night in the umcomfortable vehicle.

"Arnavji? Yeh jagah to dhaabe ke paas hai, na?" (...This place is near the dhaaba, right?)

"Huh?" he glanced at her, then looked around.

Fairly enough, he could see the little dhaaba where the sardaar and his wife had welcomed the two of them over two years ago, when the car had broken down as he was going to Nainitaal for business. She had fallen into his car after sabotaging it and they had run out of petrol. Then he had adamantly decided to walk to Nainitaal, so she had trailed behind with concern for him because he had fainted in the morning.

Khushi had gotten her clothes stolen, then they had reached the dhaaba and the folks had assumed they had eloped. She had made up her own story to stop him from leaving, he had been angry at her, she had fallen sick, he had remorsefully taken care of her, he had beaten up the man who had man-handled her. That was a right he only had on her, it had seemed. He could shout at her, brutalise her however much he wished to, but no one else could do that.

When he looked at her, she was watching him with a sparkling smile, as if she knew exactly what was going on in his head. Arnav grinned at her.

"Chalein?" he proposed. (Shall we go?)

***

The sardaar's wife closed the door behind her as she left and Khushi shivered, wet to the bone from her downpour. While Arnav was struggling to remove his jacket, she absent-mindedly walked to the room where her Laad Governor had carried her all that time back, when she was burning with fever after he had left her out, telling her he didn't want to see her face the next morning.

He had taken care of her so carefully, she hadn't been able to recognised him. She still remembered his dishevelled appearance he hadn't bothered about because all his attention had been diverted to her. she was still smiling at the precious memory when he came up behind her.

"Khushi, tum change karlo. Thand lag gayi to bimaar pad jaaogi." (Khushi, You go change. You'll catch a cold.)

"Par Arnavji, kapde to gaadi mein hi reh gaye!" (But we left the clothes in the car!)

"Par yeh vaale to geele hain, we'll get sick... Wait! We'll keep our clothes by the heater to dry, I'll look for some blankets." (But these are wet...)

She nodded and removed her dripping dupatta. She was no longer shy in front of him now. He returned a few minutes later, to find her shivering and hugging herself.

"Sirf do mile," he told her, handing her a dark green woollen blanket. (Got just two.)

Khushi smiled at him shyly before he left the room so that she could change. When she came out, swathed in his blanket, he had started a fire in the dusty fireplace, which hadn't been used over years, in the front room. She wrapped the cloth tighter around her and sat beside her husband.

Looking at him, she suddenly got hit by one of her cravings that had nothing to do with food. But she couldn't possibly tell him that, could she? She gulped, her eyes fluttering with embarrassment. This had never happened to her before.

Suddenly she wanted to stoke her stubble, rub her cheek against his, kiss his lips, feeling him against her... He Devi Maiyya! What was happening to her? Arnav, unaware of her tumult, snuggled closer to his beautiful woman.

"Tum theek ho?" (You're alright?)

She nodded. The idea came to her unexpectedly, and later she would even wonder how such a thing could even occur to her. She leaned on him.

"Voh... Arnavji... humein ab bhi thand lag rahi hai..." (Actually... Arnavji... I'm still feeling cold...)

She saw his eyes suddenly flare up with desire as he understood. She swallowed again and bit her lip.

"Well," he whispered huskily. "Hum dono ke liye ek kambal kaafi hai, na?" (One blanket is enough for us both, right?)

Khushi blushed deep crimson as he pulled her onto his lap and kissed her passionately.
