I went through an argument with someone over reading fanfics recently. He characterized it as trash which got my ire up and I soundly let him have a piece of my mind for being so judgemental and deprecating. Just because someone gets published does not guarantee that a good story was written, just that better opportunities had prevailed on that person to achieve it. It did make me wonder how caught up I have become to reading fanfics and made me delve into my conscious for the reasons they are so attractive.
I like the book club atmosphere without having to show up somewhere; the friends on the threads who make comments sometimes that enhance the updates so much; the interaction with most authors who take you along the process with them. Most of all I love fanfics for the journey of the characters, the triumph of good over evil, the dreams come true and all those beliefs that one has regarding to their own values. Twists in the storyline that makes the author bring these aspects of the characters forward and for the reader excited for more to come gives me something to look forward to each day.
Regarding perfect english and grammar, it is a joy to read and would be preferable however I find that a good story bypasses all else. All over the world there are people who have a story to tell and English is not their first language. The art of communicating something whether it be a presentation or a story is a skill that can keep the participants involved, enthralled and part of the process makes for a good communicator. Whatever language is used it is the effectiveness with which the presenter presents it that keeps a reader like me engrossed.

Ah, see, this is the unfortunate part. I was not partial to begin with; in fact my initial response to your podcast was proof as much. I have always been quite impressed with your writings; you have a very good sense of humor and a way of putting forth an idea that is refreshing. The other girl, on the other hand, is someone I have not had any interactions with. So, if I were to have a bias towards anyone, it would have been to you. Sadly, that has shifted quite dramatically in the span of a day.

If we go at this like this, Rafa, we could go on for a while. My intent in creating this thread was to give a fair representation of the entire reading masses; not just those who appreciate well-written stories. I would like to continue on that goal. Thus, please PM me if you have any further thoughts relating specifically to this issue. But feel free to share on the thread about your thoughts of what you look for FFs in general. I am not going to respond to your friends, as that would make this into a battle field. Like I said, PM me if you have any further thoughts.

Although my reaction should be to reach out for a packet of popcorn, but I can't help but point out that everybody has opinions... And just because the opinions differ, that is really no reason to start arguing. Please guys, don't argue over opinions. Opinions change. And opinions differ. The least you guys can do is agree to disagree.

Sorry if I offended anybody.

And now, pass the popcorn :D

Looks like we have a fair share of opinions here. Lets clear a few points first
1. We offer criticism to people whom we generally like and honestly wish to improve. I personally don't bother with people who don't think like me because its useless, I cannot change the way somebody thinks. The most I can do is drop one line like "Please use a colon, makes easier for me. Eg Khushi: I love you Arnavji"
2. IF functions like a freemarket economy. Demand creates supply and vice versa. You don't go to another product and demand it to be changed.
3. As far as the group dynamics are concerned, nobody is innocent here. Everyone of us has people who defend us and just because the other side plays dirty doesn't mean you can use that as your defense. Abuses are unforgivable which is why there is a button called "Report". Some of us here are smarter than others and can say the meanest things without using abusive words which cannot be technically reported, so there. Everyone has advantages. Use your own instead of crying over what others have.
In the end, using Karmachameleon's argument- If you don't pay me, don't TELL me what to do. Express your opinion, yes. But by no means you can say "Why don't you do this, its mediocre!!"

Hello Everyone,
I am grateful that you are taking the time to share your thoughts on this thread. Despite our brief diversion into airing out some leftover business, I would like to continue on the initial goal of having readers share what they look for when reading FFs. You have all offered thoughtful responses and I have to admit that there are some that I have not considered before. So, please do continue.

Thanks for making this post. Much needed post right now. I was thinking of making a similar post myself and I was glad that someone took the initiative to make one. After the much heated discussion few days back about How NOT to write FF - I am so happy you made this thread.
Now, here is my answer...

Why do you read our stories? And by us, I mean any writer that you choose to read here and have been reading.

Why do I read stories? I like to read in general, so when I see an interesting title - I like to see what is it about? If I can get into it with the first chapter/prologue then I am in. Coming to IF and reading the work here is just merely for fun/stress buster. I don't live here, I don't breathe IF, I have a life outside of IF, hence I am NOT going to sit here and make a list of DOs and DON'Ts on a FF. It's not that serious. Majority of people who are here - writing or reading is merely for fun - I am assuming.

What are your requirements for choosing and sticking with a story?

For me - personally, I don't quite have a requirement. Lot of people decide to read a certain work by checking the amount of likes replies to that particular post - that doesn't work me. I will tell you why - if a certain 'author' if I may use that term - has been writing for a long time then they tend to have a fan-following and regardless of what they write - many of their followers tend to read their work and LIKE it and REPLY to it. So being said that - my requirements for choosing and sticking to a story is ONLY one - if it totally grasps my attention and when I get impatient to read the next chapter. That's it! No matter who wrote it and how many LIKES it got or even the replies.

How important are things like spelling and grammar?

Personally - It's very important to me. When I post something - I tend to proofread it as many times as possible. As I have mentioned earlier in that very 'heated' discussion (you know what I mean) that spelling and grammar is one of my pet peeves and it totally gets to me - BUT - just because that's my requirement - again, as I mentioned it earlier, I can't/will NOT demand a writer to fix their work just because I can't seem to read it. At the end of the day - it's my choice of I want to read it or not. If it's too crappy for me to read - then I will simply click the back button and move on - because - again, it's not that serious. For people who really want to read excellent work - go on Amazon.com and read all The New York Times Best Seller - I hope you won't be disappointed after reading those books/stories.
Bottom line?
I DON'T LIKE IT - I DON'T READ IT.
P.S. Here, I am referring I - as in any/all authors.
I am NOT getting paid for all the time and effort I invest in writing here - and believe me, it's LOT of time - I am simply doing it for fun - so as a reader, if you don't like my work - the best thing to do - DO NOT read it and don't tell me what to do - A very simple American way of saying it If you are not paying me, you can't tell me what to do.
No offense to anyone...
Constructive criticism is apprecitaed - but in a civil manner.

@bold : well ur last 2 line caught my attention... becasue thts wht my point is... RES to extend my comment herehmm so here i am...i totally agree with ur comment and as i mentioned before what caught my eye in this comment actually are the last two lines...
Well i think there must be a seprate topic for these two lines to discuss...
because here on IF if anybody sees any thing wrong going on (be it intentional or unintentional act) the person would be seen
#1
Screaming like OMG the english is so bad, too many gramatical mistakes, why dont u feel ashamed of urself for writting this way, OMG Pedophila ...how dare u...u r spoiling 9 year olds here...they are getting bad impression...etc
#2
or the most coward ones will be seen making indirect sarcastic posts, in which they'll be mentioning u in sucha smart way that will be invisiable to others who'll be happily commenting there unaware of the fact and real motives behind the post...
to be honest, all of the above just for mere a reason...to discourage some one.
-OK If u cant read the content becoz of too many gramatical errors...just click the X button..or talk to the author if u r civilized enough and by civilized enough i mean pm the author and tell him/her what u dont like in their FF...if she is still repeating the same mistake...just stop reading and dont try to be rakhisawant by creating sucha big issue of particularly nothing...
-u saw some one writting about pedophila...so what? its against forum rules...great...report it simply...why to behave like MODs urself? why to take some matters in ur imature hands when u cant handle them. and why would u think some would answer you for his/her acts? or why do u think he/she is here to take directions from u on how to behave in forum? so the simplest and peacefull way is...pm the author and tell them in a civilized way coz u have no authority over some one else's hard work to behave rude, coz its quite possible tht the person is not aware of the mistake otherwise he/she would'nt have done tht. but if u still see the author repeating same mistake...go ahead and report it..and then wait for the MOD's reponse on that content(by this i am not saying Mods are gona pm u specially abt some one else's property..u aint tht burak obama NO)...then let MODs decide coz it their job to decide not yours or they dont pay SACHaindri Devi es for making decisions on their behafs, then check the last page where MODs will comment as their final decision abt the content...what ever the final decision would be will be enough for the author committing mistakes to teach him wht he did bad and why his work is been banned.. and for u too to calm ur disturbed nerves... why u guys forget tht u have a God damn report button? tht u forget and behave like mods urself? why u do think u are some one who can jugde others when are imperfect urself? and even if u do, do it in a civilized way...not like a jungli.
My simple question is ..why to spoil a peacefull environment by behaving rude or acting like the godess of truth(drama queens) and screaming out of ur lungs for a mere piece of content on the name of constructive critisium...?
my point is and was always tht ..even constructive plans can be turn distructive if not followed by the right behaviour...
thts it from my side...

Perfectly said.

Everyone needs to consider everyone's opinions.

This is not a battle where we can force others to see from our point of view.

Pass me some popcorn too please

First off did they actually have a post like "How Not to write an FF"? 😊
I did not go through the entire post but I had an inkling it was funny.
So this is a most interesting topic. And it has got me started. So you have no choice but to bear with me.

I believe a Fan Fiction is a healthy expression of fanaticism. I am a newbie writer. So may be my views are redundant and have already been rehashed to death. But I would like to say it anyway.

I had not read many FFs before I started writing and just on a lark my fingers went to the keyboard and started typing. It was an awesome experience for me but for my poor readers it was torturous. They could not understand what they have been hit with or what to make of me. I made the lead character of their beloved pair a negative character and an unapologetic one at that. People said they will hit me with a rod and murder me and all that. That's besides the point.

Coming to the actual point, I look for boldness in a writer. Someone who is not afraid to experiment. There are a few FFs that I read which made me yawn. No originality at all. The story has to be at least almost original. Satires of existing stories or popular stories retold in a novel manner is also fine. But the characters have to be well planned and charted out. And I don't enjoy explicit adult content.

I love unpredictability. I am an avid reader of novels. So I can't bring myself to read something in SMS lingo or too much Hindi. A little bit here and there is fine. As long as I don't get lost in translation. But it should not make me squint.

By the way why do I feel that this is a serious discussion and I might not have made the best first impression. But I have typed so much now and so going to post it anyway. 😃

People,

Please this has to stop, we started this to understand why one reads fan fictions and it has turned ugly. Kindly bear in mind we have impressionable people reading the thread and we are surely not setting a fine example.

I apologize in advance if this advice is unsolicited, but this has to end. When someone asks you not to be intimidated it is not only by others on the forum but by the prospect of taking part in a discussion.

Devi here wants to understand what a reader wants and hence started the thread and Rafa wanted to discuss what she does not like in some stories as it did not appeal to her sensibilities. You both write and hence you would understand, every single reader interprets what they read the way they want. At the risk of sounding repetitive I request you to end this here. I have participated on both threads and would like to say this; there is nothing that is absolutely correct or wrong, it is subject to one's view, to each their own. Don't force yours down my throat and I will not to the same with you.

It all started with the word "not" and I use it again, please do not continue this.

Thank you for reading this bit and sincerely hope this argument stops here. I do wish those who want to share their views on the subject to continue, not only on this thread but that of the pod cast too.

- Kalyaani
