Hi Devi,
Thanks for the PM and including me within your circle. As you may know I am a newbie on this forum but before then I used to read the ff from the shadows as a silent reader.
If I am going to be really honest as to how and why I started reading ff, I would have to start from the very beginning and that was when I started reading ff on fanfiction.com on the american shows. It started off with Smallville and Clois, then Ugly Betty and Detty, and then Bones with Booth & Brennan, I was also reading anything else that caught my eye. You may have guessed it, I was really into my american sci/fi & dramas and to date still follow a few. I think the interest in ff was that the main protaganists of my favourite shows were never going to get together and I loved reading writers attempts to develop these stories instead and some stories were actually a lot better than the actual serials.
Then I stumbled upon IPKKND. Even though I watched a few of the drama's on star I was never "addicted" to it like I am now with IPKKND. So how did I start reading stories on IF?
It started by googling, as there weren't any writers posting stories of Arshi on fanfiction. I had only found 1 story which was really good. But I wanted to read more because the serial was doing my head in. The chemistry of the leads, the tension and the undeniable attraction was doing my head in and I wanted to read stories of Arshi and only Arshi. After Google I came across Nayika's blog and it was her recommendations that led me to Telefan, Krani and Head over Heels and then finally one way or another I was led to Lavender and Shades of Gray by Gargee and Bingala.
To date these are the best stories I have read and by far could rival any published novelist.
I love the stories that are just that, stories. For me, if a story, whether it be a novel of ff doesn't catch my attention within the first few chapters, then I will not pick it up again. A good story has to have a good plotline, whether it parallels the show and then tapers off or even if it is completely opposite to the actual shows storyline. I love KH and Lavender for just that. The plotline is excellant, you can see the characters develop, the humour and the way the story flows.
I can't seem to get into stories that are in text speech and for the life of me cannot get into stories that are written like a script. A good story has to have the descriptions, details on the settings and have a feel of the scene and characters. KH, Lavender, Wings of a Dove and Shades of Gray have just the right combination of all these things that make them good stories.
It was Lavender that made me join IF as I wasn't able to read private chapters and a threat to close the blog of WOAD by Telefan that compelled me to break my silence and made me realise that to continue to enjoy reading these wonderful stories by extremely talented writers that I also had a responsibility to show my appreciation and feedback on what I had read.
So to all you writers out there, thank you for sharing your talent with the rest of the world! You truly are an amazing bunch of people who have work/school/life etc and still have the time to entertain us with your fabulous updates.
PS. Sorry for the very long post. Just think of it as my penance for my silence.
PPS Hindi is not my first or second language, but its surprising how fast I have been able to pick up the lingo just by watching Starplus, so I really don't mind the odd sentences here or there!

First of all, I'm a person who has rarely read novels. And all the books I read are 90% of the times, only thrillers and mysteries. I haven't read a single MB book or any other book of that equivalent, nor have I read any drama genre books. So you know what my preferences are.

Coming to the point,

Why do you read our stories? And by us, I mean any writer that you choose to read here and have been reading.

I really don't know why I read certain stories. I read randomly. If I'm in the mood and have some free time with me, I'll read any random writer's work. Mostly, I check the no. of likes and read some few comments to know what kind of story it is. If I like the response, I read it.

What are you requirements for choosing and sticking with a story?

I like stories with meaningful plots. I stop reading an FF if I find the couple randomly making out every other chapter. Basically the story should be logical and as close to reality as possible, so that I can relate with it. And I like to read something different and unique. I don't like the cliched paths.

It should be my favorite couple (Arhi) centric. The story should revolve around them. If too much attention is given to side characters, I lose interest.

And honestly, I, unlike most other readers don't like too much of description. I'm a movie person. So I want the writing to flow as quickly as the movie. If you stick around explaining a lot of things that are insignificant, I'm going to be bored and will stop reading it coz I have a very short attention span.

And one more thing. I cannot bear to read dialogues in Hindi. It slows down my reading speed and I get annoyed with it.

How important are things like spelling and grammar?

I have a high tolerance level unlike most people here. I can forgive grammar and spelling errors to a great extent coz for me, the idea is more important than how it is written. If the idea is conveyed, I'm happy.

That was my view as a reader. Now my view as a writer.

When I started out writing in IF, I hardly knew how to write a story. I wrote it in a script form. I did that for a long time and I struggled a lot with the vocabulary too coz frankly, creative writing is not my forte. I'm a person whose writing was rejected everytime in school. I use simple english coz that's my limitation. But inspite of all that, people on IF appreciated it. And today, in just a matter of few months, I can proudly say even I've written a full fledged story. And that gives me a sense of personal satisfaction with myself.

Now why I'm saying this is because if, when I had started, people had criticised my writing, I would have lost all the confidence I had mustered up and would have never dared to write again in my entire life. So the same goes to all the other writers out there who write with grammar or spelling errors. Not everyone out there is talented enough to write so beautifully like some talented writers here. So I think even if we cannot appreciate such people, we can atleast refrain from criticising them coz we don't know the exact reasons why a person writes. It can be as a way to relax yourself or it can even been to raise one's confidence or just to get plain attention or like me, to live in an alternate world to escape the real life for some moments. We never know.

i read cus i like reading. i'd read something with a GOOD storyline and an amazing character building. i basically joined the forum to read all the FFs and SSs, not because they had the protagonists from the show but becaause some FFs had an amazing storyline

And about grammar i'm no grammar nazi but obviously i'd wanna read something which i understand. if something is incorrect like "You go from here You no good" i wouldn't wanna read it cus well, duhh it doesn't make sense to me and has no impact on me. Not because i'm a total bitch and looking down at people who aren't, err good in grammar, but just cus i don't understand it. and If its incorrect it takes away from the essence. but obviously a few typos errors here and dere are fine.

so for me basic requirements are, a story which has a good Plot, narration, and something which i can enjoy reading. and if the writer actually brings emotions out of us as a reader, sone pe suhaaga. and yea i'm a suckker for funny. so i like anything funny! and not being prejudiced, if its incorrect it doesn't hold the same impact. though personally i would never tell any1 how to write. yea i'd give constructive criticism to a person's work i read, but not just a general FF i happen to pop up on my window and its language isn't up to the bar. I'd do it to a writer's work i read, not a FF i've never come across with ever

My personal favorite writers are:

Minimuffin86(all time FAVOURITEST of ALL! she's like a f**king professional author. she's amazing, intense and she does full justice to all her characters and makes you feel for all them. truly amazing. her choice of diction, narration, plot all of it just does it for you and makes you go all blotchy. she can evoke emotions like nobody can on IF and makes you think about the shit which happens around you. you just wanna keep refreshing the page till another update is there), Lethal.Me(she's THE BEST in funny! i mean funny is like her middle name, and she rocks every1's socks at it! her FF cagedhues is THE perfect definition of slapstick dry wit comedy. it has amazing characterization and you fall in love with the 4 friends, AND AND the grey eyed arnav who has the sense of humour of Chandler BIng from friends) and Harsh-_- (Just one word: Living and Loving.[okay 3, so suee me! :P :P] i fell in love with the plot. i just did! it was amaizng reading arnav work his sorry ass off )

there are other really good writers too(too many to name), who's work you just wanna keep reading again and again and again! but these 3 are my current favourite and i enjoy their writings the most out of all others

Why do you read our stories? And by us, I mean any writer that you choose to read here and have been reading.

What are you requirements for choosing and sticking with a story?

How important are things like spelling and grammar?

I started reading FFs because they had to do with the shows. (I mean, why else would anyone read FFs. ) I have always loved reading, anything from articles in magazines to novels. When I discovered FFs, I was so excited. Two of my favorite things in one! Most FFs I started reading because of the titles or prologue. I stuck to reading them because I had developed a personal connection to the stories. I could be going through my day and, randomly, think of a character and what he/she would think of a situation. Now that doesn't happen with every thread I click on. Sometimes the stories start out with a bang, but then they fizzle out because of various reasons. I read the stories I read because there is something that draws me in, whether that be the writing style, the storyline, or the characters. With the start of the school year, I have cut many stories off my list because I had just been reading them to pass time, but I was not truly interested in them. I read because I love reading, and I stick to a story because I genuinely enjoy the story.

I am also called a Grammar Nazi. I can't stand it when people use texting lingo while writing. I've always been taught that any type of formal writing should be completely written out, no shortcuts. While that does contribute to my reading or not reading a certain story, if a FF has a well, thought-out story line, I will still stick to the story. (But I've only seen a few rare cases of this.) After almost two years on this forum, I do have certain writers that I shadow. But if I am looking for new writers, the first thing that appeals to me is correct grammar. If I read a title of a thread that has symbols where letters should be, I will most likely not click on it. Grammar and spelling do play a major part in my picking a story to read.

English is my preferred language, but I can read Hindi (if it's written in English). I don't mind reading things in Hindi, but when writers try to write in Hindi and it's not correct that does turn me off from reading. I would rather a writer write in their preferred language, then them be uncomfortable trying to write in Hindi or English.

D, thanks for the topic. :)

P.S. I read through all the comments after posting my initial reply. I did get a PM for that podcast because I follow many of those writers. But I have no idea what happened so I'll keep my nose out of it.

I read just for the heck of it like most of the members. It's nice to have good grammar and "fancy" writing but really all I need is a good storyline or just a basic concept that'll interest me. If I had to answer the questions on the first page my answers would be just like Molten_lava's. So I'm not gonna repeat the stuff.

I'm not gonna lie but I have stopped reading a ff because of really obvious mistakes or I didn't like the style. Also, really "explicit" scenes with crude words are enough to put me off. It irks me.

But a lot of writers on the forum are genuinely talented so I always have something to read. If I can find the time that is...I will catch up on your ff I promise.

What motivates us readers to read any ff or such guess depends on many factors like the concept how close that is to s person who is it based on the way the writer intrigues one with their writing etc
Well I personally like going for ff that sound intriguing with the title only and some of them do catch my attention but not all
Guess its the story itself that makes me wanna read or the writer themself
It doesn't matter if they wrote in full English or even sometimes in Hindi its the story that matter to me in the end
But I guess we all have different opinions on that huh
Grammar or spelling mistakes don't deter me much as long as I can understand what is written

I'm so glad you brought this up!

I don't read a lot of stories on IF, and the few I do follow all have a similar-ish style of writing. By that, I mean the language (English) is fluent and grammar is proper. I've come across a lot of stories where words are not even spelled out fully or sentences aren't coherent and for me personally, that's a huge turn off. If I'm getting distracted by things other than the storyline then that's definitely a story I won't be reading. This may be a matter of personal taste but it does seem to make a huge difference to read a properly polished story as opposed to the "SMS lingo" as you put it (using u, cud, dat, etc. drives me nuts!)

When I read a story for the first time, if by the end of the first part I realize that I haven't paid attention to the actual writing, I'll stick with it. If, however, I'm reading and all I see is bad English and huge font and emoticons, I'm out of there!

D, I LOVE reading Lavender (unfortunately I haven't had the chance to read KH) but using that as an example, the reason I was drawn to that story was because it has a unique storyline- you have a real knack for telling such stories- that just flows! It's easy to connect to the characters and visualize what you've written and the story's engaging enough on its own that it makes me want to keep reading more and more.

I know a lot of people read stories by couples (I'm one of them) and I guess that's just because you can connect those characters to actual faces. But even if there was a story not based on couples and it was well written/ engaging, I would definitely read it!

Nice post!

Why do you read our stories? And by us, I mean any writer that you choose to read here and have been reading.

I used to be an avid reader during my high school days, but got busy in life. So now, I only read a book or two in a year. When I joined IF (by curiosity), I actually discovered something known as FF. (Please overlook my ignorance, but I never knew such things existed!). Now these stories allow me to de-stress and be happy!

I read some FFs and got hooked. I spend quite a lot of time on my computer. The reason I prefer reading FF over a book is because, when I want a distraction from work, I just have to open another window. (without moving my a**!)

I like IPKKND so reading a FF about them, help in visualizing the characters. Hence it takes less time to read than reading about completely new characters. I can magnify the font size unlike a book.

What are you requirements for choosing and sticking with a story?

I have read some great works here, which to me are publishable (with a little bit of editing).

- Good plot.

- Maturity in writing (edited, readable font and colour)

- I stay away from reading something in yellow, lemon green, etc since it is hard on my eyes.

- No SMS lingo

- Unnecessary sexual acts - Not that I don't enjoy reading them, but they should tasteful and justify the plot.

- I refuse to read contents which involve sexual violence against women. Some authors glorify it and think if ASR would do it, it is justified!

- Regular updates

- I do not check the number of likes or comments before trying out a story. But if someone recommended a story I will check it out (but not everyone has the same taste). If I liked an author's work earlier, I will definitely read his/her other works!

- I know this might sound silly, but I do read the author's note before the prologue. I don't like authors forcing for a like or a comment (Some authors are pretty adamant about it - I would just click the back button even if it could have been a great work that I missed). Liking and commenting should come naturally.

How important are things like spelling and grammar?

Very important for me. Typos, SMS lingo just break the flow. It also reflects how serious the writer is.

Though I do understand Hindi, I cannot read it in Roman script! So the lesser, the better for me - allows a smoother reading.

Sometimes I do overlook some minor grammatical mistakes over a good plot.

VIEWBIES NOTE!

Alright listen up! This post is NOT breaking any rules and what happened earlier at a certain member's FF thread was ONLY healthy criticism and i have already had a very lengthy conversation with the member who posted the criticism. I also WILL acknowledge the fact that this post has directly followed after that post which stirred up quite a commotion by the way. =/ BUT, there is no particular author mentioned by the topic starter and the member is ONLY asking for opinions directly related to FFs in general. Considering how this is the FF section, i will NOT close this thread UNLESS specific authors are targeted DIRECTLY.
If i see any bashing or a particular FF name mentioned, not only will this thread be locked but warning levels will be raised WITHOUT question. I hope everyone understands because i'm not going to have a lengthy conversation with every single one of you. Action will have to be taken eventually if this escalates.

If you STILL have a problem with this thread, PM me. We'll talk and figure out what's bothering you instead of reporting it a ridiculous amount of times.

i read ff because i love reading and arhi soo much:)

things that i LIke: ff's are free platform to showcase more depth in the characters and the show itself, i really love when someone starts off with different concept but eventually arhi are going to be together, that promise make me read that story, also, a well written story is another great factor, i mean i have came across those writers who had a great concept and the story was also going great but the writing structure was so poor that i had to drop of those stories because they were not gripping me.
things i don't read:
I'm not trying to be mean to people but i really hate it when arhi are not together or romancing someone else and hating each other, i mean great ur trying to write something differernt but at least keep arhi's love the same and put ur spice into it, even dark stuff is i don't read because i'm a die hard romantic and mostly read fun-loving, happy-sad, a little drama kind of ff's
although,i have started to read ff's with a little bit of darkness but not too much.
at the end, i really appreciate all the ff writers who work so hard,
thank u all
u guys are the best
even if i don't read ur work, it doesn't mean ur bad, i just means that ur stories are just too good for me;)
