PART 15

Finally the day had come. The day that everyone looked forward to in their life. But this day didnt mean the same to Angad and Kripa. Angad sat in his room, rather slept in his room, while Kripa paced across it. They didnt know what to do yet. Angad had promised Kripa that he would do something but he still hadnt. What is wrong with him? she thought. She sat down by her phone and stared at it for almost 5 minutes and then quickly picked it up. She dialed Angad's phone number and waited for him to pick it up. When he didnt, she hung up but then dialed it again. This time he picked up.

A( in a sleepy voice): hello?

K: hi Mr. Angad Khanna. waha tum so rahe ho aur yaha meri neend udd gayi hai

A: hmm...kripa? what time is it?

K:(angry) its almost 3!!!

A: okay? whats wrong with you?

K: angad agar tum bhool gaye ho to main tumhe yaad diladu ke aaj humari sagai hai

A: yeh batane ke liye tumne mujhe subah ke theen baje phone kiya?

K: what is wrong with you? tum yeh sab itna lightly kaise le sakte ho?

A: relax kripa. i was tensed too. but when i realized that i can do nothing i just gave up

K: GAVE UP? how can you give up? angad this is not funny anymore ok? i mean humari sagai...angad i really dont want this to happen. its just going to add some drama to our lives.

A: kripa just relax. Dad promised me...its only an engagement. shaadi to bohut door ki baat hai. probably not for the next 5 years ok? theres nothing to worry about

K: angad tum mere Dad ko nahi jaante. woh kuch bhi kar sakte hai. i dont trust him. he always acted like he never cared then why is he being so caring today? why does it matter now?

A: you never asked him?

K: i didnt bother.

A: kripa...i think you should.

K: why?

A: because i talked to my dad. he said that...that...

K: angad...i dont care. i just want him to be the same again. i trusted him more when he didnt care. atleast i knew that he was one person i couldnt depend upon. but today...i dont know if i should trust him. what if he breaks it again..i will never be able to forgive him then....NEVER!

A: kripa just listen to me ok? this engagement...it doesnt mean anything for now. its the wedding that we need to worry about right? and thats not happening for atleast 5 years. dont worry about it.

K: if you say so...

A: and now Ms. Kripa Sharma. go to bed and let me sleep too. we have a big day tomorrow...i mean today!

K: ok angad. good night.

A: nite.

Angad hung up and sat up straight on his bed. He was a little scared too. He couldnt beleive that he was about to get engaged to Kripa. She was his best friend and honestly, he had never thought that this day would arrive. He looked at their photograph that he always kept by his bed. When he had told her that the engagement hadnt meant anything, he had lied. It did mean something, atleast to him it did. The past 3 days, he had sat on his bed and thought about what Ananya had said. He still didnt have an answer to it.

He remembered her words. "promise me that you will never ever lie to me again", she had firmly told him the other day at the restaurant. He shifted uncomfortably as he rested his head back on his headboard. He had lied to her that day. " I shouldnt have said that", he said to himself as he thought about what he had told Kripa. Yes, Ananya was his first girlfriend and his first kiss but what she wasnt was his first crush. That he had lied about. He grabbed the glass of water on the side table and tried to remember their childhood days. Yes, it was Kripa. She was his first crush but he had decided to never let her know that. " I was too immature at that time", he had repeatedly told himself over the past few years. After all he was only 14 when he had first started to think about girls and Kripa was the first one that had come to his mind. He had tried really hard to get over that because he knew that wasnt the right thing to do. " I would have lost everything between us". This was his explanation for it. He just never wanted to lose her as his best friend. She was the only thing he had afterall and losing her would mean losing himself.

That was why he had decided to come visit his parents for the summer that year. He remembered leaving Simla and Kripa behind and how angry she was at him for doing so. But she had never said anything. He had the right to do what he wanted afterall. Reality hit him really hard when he came home and saw his parents away from home most of the time. The only person there was his nanny and she was just too strict for him to like. The only solace he had found was Ananya Sachdev, daughter and heiress to the multinational trading company. From there started his journey on a look out for women that were different from Kripa. If someone would have actually went back and looked at Angad's long list of girlfriends, one would find them to be somewhat, if not complete, opposites of Kripa. He wanted to get over her that bad.

While Ananya was basically a really great girl, she was very different from Kripa indeed. She knew how to cook and clean, while Kripa, well, needed some help in that department. She was into art while Kripa was more into math. Even if their personalities were ignored, there was nothing common between them other than the fact that they were both really great friends. When Angad's father had clearly told him to stay away from Ananya, he was a little taken aback because at that time he really liked the girl. But he still listened to his father. Sometimes, he had wished he hadnt but then again he knew that Ananya had just been a passing phase in his life. But what he had hated the most was that his father had considered him as a business tactic. He had pushed angad closer to ananya when he really needed the contract and when the deal was over, he had conveniently asked angad to stay away and better yet, move back to Simla.

Angad came back to reality and turned the lights off again. He slided his body under his comforter and turned sideways so he could look at kripa's picture under the dim moonlight. It was going to be a big day for them, he told himseld. " maybe bigger for me than her", he reminded himself. "angad i really dont want this to happen", her words had hurt him a little but not majorly. He had once wished that this day would come. But today, just like Kripa, he didnt want it. He knew that he had come a long way since his little crush. It was much more now. " LOVE?", he asked his heart and it always gave him a firm NO. He smiled at this thought. " I know what you mean", he silently told his heart. It really wasnt love between them, atleast not the kind that a marriage needed. But something that had no definition. There was something much more powereful between them. He just didnt know what it was.

THE ENGAGEMENT...

The guests still had not arrived and Kripa and Angad's families were getting ready to welcome them. The party was at the Khanna Mansion and that was why the Sharma family had come over to the Khanna mansion really early in order to get everything set up. Kripa was given a room to get ready in, which happened to be right accross from Angad.

Kripa sat in her room, staring at the watch. It was 8:00 am. " too early...i wish this was over already", she told herself. She sat in front of the mirror and stared at the jewelry and her beautiful dress laying behind her. She sighed and then turned around to look at them again. She remembered angad's words again that this engagement didnt really matter and that the wedding was atleast 5 years away. She got up and sat on the bed.

K(thinking): this really does matter to me angad. i wish it did to you too. the reason i dont want this to happen is because i dont want something like this to be written onto the page of our relationship forever and ever....i just hope nothing changes between us. i wouldnt be able to tolerate losing you.....never!

ANGAD's ROOM

Angad fixed his hair and threw his comb on the bed. It was still 8:00 am. He had almost 3 hours before he had to go downstairs for the engagement party. He took his clothes out and set it on the bed and stared at it for a few seconds. When his phone rang, he grabbed it still looking at his sherwani.

A: hello?

An: hi angad. this is Ananya

A: oh..hi ananya.

An: hey. um i had to ask you..i....i needed a little help. aaiiii....

A: yeah go ahead

An: i dont know how to say it but...I...

A: come on ananya. just tell me.

An: never mind angad. its nothing.

A: whats wrong ananya? come on tell me. is everything ok?

An: yeah...everything is ok but...its just that.

A: ok wait. ill be there in a few minutes ok?

An: oh no i....

A: ill be there dont worry.

An: no angad...angad...

Angad hung up before she could speak and quickly changed into a pair of jeans and a white shirt. He grabbed his cell phone and his car keys and rushed out his door. At the same time, Kripa came out of her room in short denim shorts and a big white shirt that came up to the middle of her thighs making it look like she wasnt really wearing any shorts. Angad looked at her, ofcourse he had seen her like that before. Kripa looked at him and wondered where he was going at this time on the day of their engagement.

K: kya hua angad? bohut jaldi mein lag rahe ho.

A: kripa i have to go. mujhe ananya se milna hai

K: what? ananya se? angad its our engagement

A: yeah so? besides Ananya se milna iss waqt zyada zaroori hai. ok?

K:(angry): ok fine. jao!

A: kripa meri baat...kripa...

She went inside her room and slammed the door. Angad knew he shouldnt have said that. But at this time, it was more important to talk to Ananya. He quickly got into his car ignoring his parents and drove off.

Angad knocked on Ananya's door and waited for her to open it. When she did, he smiled and greeted her with a quick hug.

An: come in ..

They went into her little apartment. Angad had never seen it before. The last time he had dropped her off at the corner of the street and then left. This time he went in and looked around. It was a clean place he thought. He took a seat on the comfortable little sofa. Ananya sat across from him and looked at him with a smile. Angad continued to look at her thinking about why she had called.

A: tumne mujhe phone kyon kiya that ananya? i mean...something wrong?

An: uh woh...

A: batao mujhe...

An: nahi kuch nahi angad.

A: agar tum mujhe apna dost maanti ho to batao

An: really angad. its nothing

Annoyed at trying to convince her to talk, angad snaps back at her in anger

A: agar kuch nahi tha to mujhe phone karke dara kyon diya? aaj meri engagement hai aur main....

An: what?

A: yes, today is my engagement. aur main bewakoofo ki tarah yaha aa gaya tumhare baatein sun ne ke liye. i mean if it wasnt important why didnt you just tell me on the phone? i wasted my time to come here and kripa got angry for no reason. why Ananya?

He turned around to look at her. She was crying by now. Angad felt really bad for yelling like that. She kneeled down on her knee near the couch and rested her head on top of it. Angad went and sat down next to her.

A: hey..Ananya. im sorry? i shudnt have overreacted like this. its just that...

An: no angad. it isnt your fault. i should have never called you. i was really desperate and...im sorry

A: come on Ananya. its not....ok fine. tell me what it is. please?

An: Angad today is the blood donation drive at college

A: so?

An: i had pledged to donate a pint of my blood but....i cant. and i needed someone else to take my place so that...so that I wouldn lose my job.

A: your job? i thought you...

An: a waitress? that i am. but i need to work at two places to get enough money. i also work at the Life services building at college and...if i didnt find someone to donate the blood i would lose my job Angad. so i called you to ask if you could....

A: so why didnt you tell me this?

An: because i remember you once saying that you are terrified of needles and i thought that this would be too much for me to ask. so i....

A: but why cant you donate blood? i mean whats wrong?

An: um..woh mein kuch....its just that I...

A: come on ananya. phir mujhse kuch chupa rahi ho?

Ananya got up and walked away from Angad. Angad got up and looked at her curiously, waiting for an answer.

An: because Angad. I am pregnant!!

A: what?

Ananya turned around to face Angad. He was just in a complete shock.

A: lekin yeh sab

An: its not important Angad. its not anymore. he's gone and...anyway, im sorry for bothering you at this hour. i think you should leave. ill find someone else to take my place.

A: ananya please iss waqt mein kaise tumhe..

An: please angad. mujhe tumhare support ki zaroorat hai. tumhare humdardi ki nahi. please mujhe iss bare mein apne haal pein chod do...aur please, kisi ko iss bare mein mat batana

A: you can trust me....take care

Without letting her say anything more, he left her alone.

An: mujhe usse yeh sab nahi batana chahiye tha...i shouldnt have.

next: the engagement. and what is Ananya going to bring to angad and kripa's lives? love or problems? only time will tell
