Part 26:
The driver of the SUV which had collided into Khushi's bike had screeched to a stop right after hitting her. Suffice to say that if the brakes had not been stepped on by the reckless-but-suddenly-thoughtful driver, Khushi would be as lifeless as a ragdoll, after the tires of the monstrous vehicle had passed over her. People gathered, some yelling at the driver for his careless driving, traffic police seized the keys from the driver, and called the ambulance.
Khushi gasped for air, as her shocked brain failed to instruct the lungs to carry on with its routine of breathing. Reminding and urging herself to breathe, she murmured his name. Suddenly craving the touch of his hand, which she knew would bring some relief to this amaranthine pain. On another hand, she was thankful to her Devi Maiyya that he was not there with her. Had he seen her like this, he would have had a stroke! Khushi thought, her lips twitching in what was actually a smile, before she passed out.
---
Arnav frowned as he saw one wrong thread marring the beauty of the otherwise plain sleeve of one of Khushi's dresses. He threw it away, planning to blast the manager at his textile mill. His phone beeped to life, and he smiled when he saw Khushi's name flash on it. "Khushi??" he asked, as he fought a smile. "Is this Mr. Arnav??" Asked a strange voice, and Arnav's smile turned into a frown, a cold feeling settling into his stomach.
"Yes?" He all but whispered in fear, into the phone.
"A woman has met with an accident here. . . . . ." The person on the other end kept talking. But Khushi meeting with an accident was all Arnav comprehended, as he blanched, too shocked to listen to anything else. "Where is she?!" He cut the person and listened as he was instructed to come to Bansal Hospital as soon as possible. Arnav rushed to the hospital, the empty feeling in his gut spreading to his chest now. Parking his car carelessly, he ran into the hospital, shouting at the receptionist to learn where Khushi was. She had been taken into the operation theatre. And he had barged in there too, but was soon being guided out of there by a Dr. Gargee, who had to use all of her strength to tug at him.
Visitors were actually a pain for the doctors. Yes. She understood his anxiety. But him crying all over her would not really help her, would it?! Not that he had been bawling his eyes out. He had stood at the door of the theatre, his eyes wide, as he took in the numerous doctors working on the lifeless body of his love. Yes, she had realized that too. Oh, wasn't it but apparent?!
Mortified to no end, that there was nothing he could do to save Khushi, he had blindly trusted the woman who had tugged him out of the operation theatre. Somewhere in the corner of his mind, he had registered the fact that the woman accompanying him was a doctor. "Save her. . . . Pl. . . . Plea. . . Please. . ." A horrified murmur had come out of his lips when she had made him sit down and was about to return to the theatre.
Gargee had taken pity on him then. She had assured there was nothing wrong with her. At least nothing fatal. Yet! Her mind added to herself. But God help her if she told him that right now. Especially after seeing that a little of color returned to his pale face. She had then returned to the theatre, smiling at how love affects two people. If something happened to one, it would become next to impossible for the other to survive. When she turned back, she had found him closing his eyes. Probably praying, she had thought, before getting back to her duty.
Arnav had been immovable for the whole day. Telling Akash of the disaster, he had asked him to inform Payal. And soon his family members were bustling around the corridors leading to the operation theatre. If anybody had a doubt regarding Arnav's feelings for Khushi, they were thrown to the wind with just one look at his face.
And when she had been taken on a gurney to a special ward, his face had again paled, matching Khushi's pallor.
Khushi's family had arrived too, and were now being consoled by the Raizadas. It had been hours before Khushi had gained consciousness, and nobody, not even his Di, had been able to evoke any kind of reaction out of him. He had just stood there, his face blank and blanch. Only when it had been informed to them that Khushi was conscious, did Arnav look up, his eyes gleaming with hope.
All of them rushed inside, ignoring the protests of the doctors and nurses.
---
It was flashes of everything that Khushi saw and heard, as she passed in and out of consciousness, before she was injected with a sedative and she gave in to the welcoming darkness.
She opened her eyes to be greeted with Arnav's family, and she noted that her family and Lavanya were there too. She was touched, hugged, and blessed, and through all this, her eyes searched for him. Where was he? Didn't he know that she needed to see only him?Khushi wondered as she half-mindedly answered all the questions of their family members and assured them that she was fine. The police had come in, explaining what had happened and had taken her signature on a few papers. The driver who had sped through the adjacent lane had broken a traffic rule, wanting to pass through even after the signal had turned red for him. And thus had collided into Khushi's bike, which was totaled, and she cried at such a loss, before Anjali made fun of her. Khushi's left leg was broken, she had lost so much blood that she still looked pale, even with blood being infused to her externally, through a horrible looking IV needle. And she was crying over a bike?!
Anjali even teased Khushi that her brother would get a hundred more of them if she wanted. Khushi blushed at that and her parents exchanged a surprised, but understanding glance. Anjali had just seen Khushi look around the room, her eyes searching for Arnav. 'Where did he go now?! He was here all the while!' Anjali thought as she met her husband's gaze. "Saale saahib police ke saath gaye hue hain. Ab jo bhi aapke iss haalat ke zimmedaar hai, unki tho khair nahi. . . ." And Khushi winced. Of course. Him and his infamous anger. But should not he be making sure that she was alright before he went away thrashing the poor bas***d who had hurt her?? Khushi thought, suddenly petulant. Anjali wondered if she had missed something. He had been so adamant when Khushi was unconscious. And now he was nowhere to be seen?! Where are you, Chotey? she thought, as she gave a gentle squeeze to Khushi's hand.
---
The police had to physically shove Arnav away from the man who had hurt Khushi. Once he had seen Khushi stir from unconsciousness, he had rushed out, wanting to vent his anger out first. If he had stayed there, he would have probably shaken Khushi for making him go through this. In fact, he still was furious with himself for two reasons. One, for forgetting that f**king file. Two, for letting himself fall in love! He knew how hard it was when his loved ones left him. He had gone through it all. And yet, he had so foolishly fallen for her. But that did not seem like a plausible reason for long. He had not really been given an option to stay away from Khushi. It had always been like, he had to see her. He had to be with her. So why was he not rushing to her side now? When he knew she needed him the most.
He hated to accept the reason to even himself, but he was afraid. Afraid that she just may not make it. Afraid that she might see his fear. Afraid of. . . . . . No! I am angry! With her for making me go through hell! Didn't she already know that I hate feeling helpless?! He thought, as he made up his mind that he would not go to her for a while. He just did not want to talk to her. His behavior seemed childish even to him. But God help him if he went to her, to give her the much-needed relief of having him by her side so easily!
---
Payal had stayed back to look after Khushi and also to keep her company. And Lavanya had been sent home, against her protests. The Guptas were to lodge at the Raizadas' for a while. And they had all left too, after Payal had assured them that she would call them immediately, were anything to go wrong.
Khushi was getting restless by each passing moment, pining to see him. And she had been sure that he would be well aware of her distress on not seeing him, which was effecting her more than her broken leg and the wound on her temple. She controlled her tears, as she felt the morphines spread through her, making her feel a little drowsy. She was in no mood to sleep, but she did feel too exhausted, and her eyes filled up with tears. She hated this state she was in. She was aching, angry, sad and plenty other things. All thanks to you Arnav Singh Raizada! she thought scathingly.
And yet, she could bring herself to stop craving for him. It was in this morbid state she had closed her eyes, when she felt him. She opened her eyes and saw him clench his jaws, and ball his fists, as if he was fighting himself from snapping at the nearest thing. His glare was smouldering, even though it was red rimmed, telling Khushi that he had been crying. She struggled to sit up and was soon gently, but firmly being pushed back to the bed. With her hand which did not have a needle sticking to it, she gingerly touched his fore arm, and watched as he recoiled his contact, making her break down completely. . . . . . .
