Part 1
July 2011
The morning rays made their way all across Dehli, waking up everyone from their night's slumber. The birds started their regular chirping, the leaves up on the trees swaying with the wind. The hot summer of Dehli did not seem to affect the inhabitants of the city who started coming out on roads to start their day off. The starting of engines of all kinds of vehicles could be heard and the city became alive again after the peaceful night. Horns of the vehicles blew adding up to the already rising noise pollution in Dehli.
Shantivan was no different place. As the morning rays woke up everybody else in the city, it also crept up in the room of one of India's most successful business tycoon, a young bachelor of around 27 years of age. Arnav Singh Raizada. Normally, the name was enough to cause a person to fall off his chair but in Shantivan, Arnav was no more than any other young bachelor of Dehli. Specially for his elder sisiter, Anjali.
'Chotte! Wake up already. It's seven in the morning and you're late for Aarti!', Anjali said while taking an extra pillow from Arnav's king size bed, clearly complimenting the luxurious life of his owner, and hitting Arnav with it. When Anjali recieved no response from Arnav other than some low irritated grunts, she sat on the bed with a loud thud and attacked his hair mercilessly. She took a fist full of his hair and started pulling at it.
Arnav sat up straight on his bed, fuming with anger. 'What the hell, Di! How old are you? 5? Get out of my bed, now!', he said through gritted teeth, looking Anjali straight in the eye. Anjali got up from his bed almost instantly and stood in front of him and tears started flowing from her eyes. 'Fine', she said, hurt evident from her voice. One thing the mighty Arnav Sigh Raizada could not tolerate was his sister being hurt. He immediately jumped out of his bed and stood next to his sister, holding her from her shoulders and said, 'Di, Di, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it. Di i'm so sorry. I shouldn't hav-'. He was cut off by the sight in front of him. His sister was suppressing a laugh inside her but was failing miserably at it. And finally she broke into fits of laughter.
'Ey Bhagwan! This is too funny. Chotte, I do this everyday and you forget everyday', she said between her laughter. Arnav gave her a death glare to which she quickly said, 'Acha baba, sorry. Now get ready quickly and come down for breakfast', she said before licking her thumb and sliding it across Arnav's forehead lines. Arnav shoved her hand away looking at her with a disgusted look while she exited his room, giggling like a five year old indeed.
Arnav let himself fall on the leather black couch next to his bed. 'She'l drive me crazy one day. I need to find her a man and that too quick', he said to himself and went to the bathroom to get ready for the day.
Anjali was a widow who lived with her brother, the Arnav Singh Raizada, their grandmother and her three year old daughter. She had lost her husband in an air crash before the birth of her daughter, Anania. She had been devastated but her daughter and her loving brother helped her out of the trauma. She still occasionally broke down though. Ever since her husband's death, Arnav had been looking for a suitable man to marry his sister off to. He couldn't see his sister and Anania, the second woman in his life after Anjali, like this. He wanted them to have a family and didn't want Anania an orphan, much like he and his sister were.
'Bitya, Chotte is getting late for office. Didn't you wake him up?', Devyani Singh Raizada inquired from her grand daughter on the breakfast table.
'Nani, he's in his room getting ready', Anjali replied before looking up at the stairs to find his brother coming down, ready for office. 'He's here Nani'.
Arnav sat on the breakfast table and let the two ladies taunt him about his careless attitude. If anyone from his office stepped into Shantivan even for a mere second, they'd be shocked it was the same man who ordered people around ruthlessly and always got his own way. In this house, he was known as 'irresponsible' whereas the world knew him as the most 'efficient' businessman. He sipped down his tea in one go and stood up from the table.
'Di, i'm off to work', he said with a straight face. Instead of going towards the main door of Shantivan though, he made his way towards Anjali's room. He pushed open the door to find a sweet, innocent three year old sleeping peacefully while sucking her thumb. He went towards her and slightly kissed her forehead and fixed her quilt that had come off of her and exited the room. He collected his briefcase from Anjali and reluctantly let her apply a tika and left for work. Anjali sighed at her brother's ignorant attitude. She glanced at her room where few minutes ago Arnav had been and smiled. She had been seeing this sight everyday since she and Anania had moved back here. Her Chotte loved Anania like anything. He was spoiling her actually. One could only witness his human side when she was around, she was his everything.
'Chotte, there will come a day when this house will be filled with the laughter of another young one. Your young one. To play with my Anania. And I'm going to find the most prettiest bride for you to give you your own little miss sunshine. I'm going to find you your khushi, your happiness Chotte, I promise', she said smiling and retired to the mandir once again.
