Chapter 17: Running Away
Virat turned clutching his head in pain... Malika had been by his side for endless day and nights taking care of his every need. Josh had been arrested and the vadhera power meant he would be gone for longer than most... But this did nothing to help malikas conscience. 'as long as she was alive, so was her past... There was no denying or removing it, no matter how bad it was'
She had been sleeping in the hospital chair, yet the shock of seeing josh again meant she was not herself, her normally wide beautiful eyes were now icy and cold and her days were haunted by memories of josh, her nights spent screaming when she had nightmares of him. The glow in her face was long gone and this was undeniable. Virat ate carefully from the spoon in malikas hand, looking admiringly at the woman who was so strong that a life of sadness had not broken her.
Manvi had gone back to rishikesh to heal her broken heart, yet virat did not know this, for now he had to focus on getting malika back to her old self, a task that right now seemed impossible.although she believed she owed a lot to virat, malika did not know how important she was to him, for her friendship, virat was willing to sacrifice his love. At the moment he cared not for the future, rather the present seemed crucial... He could not afford to lose the one friend that had made him 'virat' again. With pity for malika making his heart heavy, virat closed his eyes unsure how the week had gone by... His family in and out of the room, but malika never leaving his side. Unsure how long he had been asleep... Virat woke with a start as he put his arm across the bed to see it was empty.
His heart sunk automatically. The feeling of dread making his hands turn cold. Looking to the bathroom door, virat saw that the door was wide open and the lights were off. He sat up straight and called for the nurse.
'im sorry sir, but she left a while back'
'she didnt say where she was going?'
The nurse shook her head before leaving virats room.
Virats stomach sank, he couldnt even get himself out of the bed to do something. He leaned over and looked at the time 2.03am. Suddenly he remembered his mobile phone. He picked it up and dialled malika only to be disappointed by a buzzing in the hospital chair.
Virat dialled viren
'bhai, i need you right away' was the only thing he could manage. Less than 15 minutes later, virat and viren were standing at the door of malikas home on melrose path calling her name.
Seeing a light on in a far room, virat kicked the door down with all the strength he could manage while in pain.
MALIKA! MALIKA!... Virat and viren walked in and out of several rooms both searching for malika. Suddenly, viren heard a scream.
'MALIKA WAKE UP, PLEASE, WAKE UP,MALIKA I NEED YOU'
viren ran to the room to see virat kneeling down shaking a figure on the floor. Tears streaming down his face, virat looked at his brother.
"bhai she wont wake up, please tell her i need her, tell her to wake up"
Viren looked over the body for the first time, his eyes glued on the cold yet beautiful lifeless form that held a bottle marked 'cyanide'.
viren stared saying nothing. His many years as a lawyer had taught him many things, one of them being the fact that cyanide meant instant death.
He turned around and wiped a tear that escaped his eye. Viren looked at his brother, he noticed virats undeniable sorrow as he realised that she was no longer alive, what he failed to notice, was that virat had died inside.
Viren also saw a dull expression that had enveloped virats normally smiling eyes. His tears no longer falling, virat looked helplessly as the ambulance carried his only true friend away. Saying nothing to his brother who now had his arms around him in attempt to comfort him. Virats hands hung to his sides as he clutched on to something in his hand.
Noticing that his brother was standing there numb, viren let go and glanced at his brothers fist. Seeing the white envelope with his brothers name printed at the front.
viren asked virat 'where did you find that?'
'in her hands'
'what is it?' he questioned
'i dont know'
'read it' he demanded
'i cant' virat finished defeated.
'the car ride home was a quiet one, with virat staring coldly at the paper in his hands.
As viren parked the car, he thought of his family sleeping soundly unaware what kind of sorrow had just befallen their youngest son.
'virat, im here for you' viren uttered in vain to virat who quietly left the car saying absolutely nothing and made his way to his room shutting his door.
Virat,
You are one of the best things that's ever happened to me. You're my love and my best friend dont ever doubt that. And every day that goes by, it seems like I discover something new about you to love. It's incredible to me how one person can make such a big difference in my life. You touch my heart in a way I never knew before. Thank you my love for being so good to me,without you my whole life would have been so tough and painful, there would have been no colors or joy in it if you had not joined me.
Those people are so lucky who have friends like you, my love you are one of the precious gift of nature for me, you were a shower for me when it was warm and you were light when there was darkness everywhere.
I feel I am the one amongst those who have had the luxury of pure and genuine friends around them and i can tell you how it is so nice to feel that you were a part of my life. IThank you so much my dear virat for walking along life with me, you have no doubt made my journey easy, life would have been so exhausting without you. You once told me that the world has two things to offer us, life and love, with your love, you gave me life. Now by taking my life, i have given you your love.Sacrificing your happiness for the happiness of the one you love, is by far, the truest type of love, just know that deathis not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live and for me i can say that,
Perhaps I liked the dreams of the future better than the history of my past, but josh coming back has just reminded me that mypast is not dead. In fact, it's not even past and as long as i live it will be with me forever.
Many of us crucify ourselves between two thieves virat, regret for the past and fear of the future. I have truly loved you... But the only pain worse than the fact i cant change my past, is the knowledge that i almost came in between the course of true love. Love is like a ghost virat, many have talked of it but only few have seen it. Dont wait till its too late for Life is too short to dwell on things you cant change . And one of the hardest things in life is watching the person you love, love someone else... As i close my eyes, I ask only one thing from you virat... Please be happy, you have my love even after im gone, if you ever feel you need me, close your eyes and go to that memory where we decided we could never let each other go. I love you now and eternally forLove is stronger than death even though it can't stop death from happening, no matter how hard death tries it can't separate people from love. It can't take away our memories either. In the end, life is stronger than death. With my death i give you your life.
With love,
Malika
Virat stared at the paper in his hands... His eyes dry and cold for a few seconds, not knowing what To say or do.
"NOOO! WHY?!WHY?! WHY?!" he cried to himself as he fell to his floor.
