Next day morning
How to apologize to Arnav Singh Raizada
1) A steaming cup of black coffee with a smiley face. Check.
2) Pancakes with a smiley face drawn on them with maple syrup. Check.
3) A picture of a smiling Prof. Snape hanging on the wall. Scratch that. It's not even possible. Replacement: A picture of Sheldon Cooper smiling creepily hanging on the wall. Check.
4) Anjali Singh Raizada smiling. It was highly doubtful that would make him happy, but oh well. Check.
Anjali bit her manicured nails as she waited for her brother to come down for breakfast. This was her worst list so far. She had thought about how to tackle a situation like this. A lot.
She is a businesswoman. Give her a tough deal to crack and she would do it in no time. But this? This was just...awkward for her.
So she tried the option that came to her mind first. Google.
Google's best answers?
1) Verbal apology
2) Passing a handwritten note under the door.
3) Reading "The Fine art of Apology: Why, When and How to Apologize."
4) Apology quotes.
5) Types of apologies.
Duh. If only Google knew she had to apologize to Arnav Singh Raizada.
So, she had ended up with...smiley faces.
Finally, Arnav came down and sat down at his usual seat. He took in his surroundings. Everything was so...jolly. His coffee and pancakes had a smiley face. Sheldon Cooper was smiling at him which always managed to raise the hair at the back of his neck. As if the former was not enough, even Di was smiling!!
"Di, what's wrong? What have you done now?" asked Arnav still extremely annoyed with his sister.
"Chhote, don't sound so condescending now. First, do you forgive me for what I did?" asked Anjali, hope in her voice.
"You didn't even apologize! If anything, all this has only managed to creep me out more. And please, stop smiling. It's making me feel weird!" said Arnav, while eating the pancake.
"But...but...I did all this for you!! This is all to make you forgive me!" Said Anjali at her wit's end.
"You really want me to forgive you?"
"No, I stayed up till 3 AM, barely slept and woke up early to make all this because I want to enhance my culinary skills."
"Don't get all the sarcastic with me Di" warned Arnav.
"Whatever, it's not like you have a copyright over it or something. Just tell me, am I forgiven or not?"
"If you can answer this, then you are forgiven. What was the name of the guy whose help you took to sabotage the date?" enquired Arnav.
"I can't answer that."
"Why?"
"He made me sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement after sabotaging the date. He was quite scared you know. It was like he would have an asthma attack if I didn't sign it."
"Great. So, now I have lost another opportunity of proving to Khushi that I was not responsible for anything that happened at the date." sighed Arnav.
"Did you try talking to her? I mean, go to college and just try to say that you are sor...ry. Crap, I can't say that word properly till now" said a disappointed Anjali.
"If it's so tough for you to say it, it's worse for me! Anyways, I'll try to get her to talk to me first. If that doesn't work, then you better start thinking of something else because you ain't slipping out of this one so easily, Di" said Arnav, sternly. He got up, slung his backpack over his shoulders and left the house.
Yeah, sure. Who cares about business? That can wait. My new job is to find ways to patch up two friends.
Evening
When Arnav Singh Raizada reached his house that evening, he realized what it felt like to be invisible without an Invisibility Cloak. Pathetic. Infuriating enough to compel him to break something. Embarrassing. And most of all...it hurt. It hurt more, because the person who was ignoring him was his best friend.
This is how his whole day had gone:
On reaching college:
Arnav (loudly): "Khushi! What up?"
Khushi (walks past Arnav): "Hey, Priya! My bestie! Did you watch ________ last night? Was it not the most amazing episode ever?"
Arnav (feels awkward as people stare at him like he is an idiot calling out random names)
During the lecture:
Arnav (whispering): "Psst! Khushi! Is the timetable for the final semester exams out yet?"
Khushi (changes her seat because she couldn't 'hear' what the professor was saying)
Arnav (starts scribbling as the professor gives him a pointed look. Embarrassed had a new synonym-'Arnav').
After the last lecture:
Arnav (very dejectedly):"Khushi, seriously, will you just talk to me once? Let me explain."
Khushi (screams like saw the poster of a new Final Destination movie and runs away)
Arnav (Massages his ears): Ouch! What the eff is wrong with her? Damn you, Khushi Kumari Gupta!
So, when Anjali asked him if he spoke with Khushi, he just shook his head, went upstairs and banged the door of his bedroom shut behind him.
Anjali sighed. She genuinely didn't want to interfere. Okay, maybe a little. But the universe had given her the message- 'Anjali, you must patch these two stupid love struck kids ASAP'. How could she disobey the universe?
Taking her ever-so-cool parents' permission, she invited Khushi and Payal for a stay over at her place. Khushi hesitated but who could ever say 'no' to Anjali Singh Raizada?
Later at night (after midnight)
Arnav paced the length of his room thinking of what he could do. The fact that constant sounds of giggling were coming from next door was not exactly helping him.
Khushi was right there in his sister's room. All he had to do was go and talk to her. But he had tried to talk to her directly for the entire day. It had not gone the way he had planned.
It was time for Plan B.
He texted her sister,
Send Khushi to the kitchen in about an hour. Okay?
The reply was immediate, as if she was waiting for such a text,
Aye, aye Captain :)
He rushed to the kitchen and got to work. If this didn't work, then nothing would.
An hour later
Di was acting weird thought Khushi as she was on her way to the kitchen to fetch a bottle of water for Di. Khushi tried telling Di that there was already a bottle in the room but Di insisted that she wanted 'fresh' water.
Surprisingly, the lights in the kitchen were already on and what was more surprising was that right in front of her on the platform was a plate full of really weird shaped'jalebies.
Like a moth is attracted to the flame, she walked over to the platform to have a closer look at the jalebies. She picked up one, tried to make sense of what shape it was written, when suddenly, the heard the door of the kitchen click shut.
Uh-oh.
It's a thief. No, it's a serial killer. No, it's a thief. What if it's a thief and a serial killer? I must raise an alarm and give the rest of the family time to escape while they can and call the police!
Her back still towards the door and eyes shut, she raised her hands in surrender, the jalebi still in her hand, and she turned around as slowly as possible. Just as she was about to scream her lungs out, she felt something warm covering her mouth, making it absolutely impossible for her to even open her mouth. A handkerchief? No, it was soft too. It was a hand! Oh God, what if she was being kidnapped?
Her eyes flew open at that very thought, and the relief that she felt when she saw Arnav covering her mouth with the palm of his hand, was unfathomable. She relaxed, and then looked at Arnav who was smirking victoriously.
Suddenly, she remembered that she was supposed to ignore him. She protested with her eyes but he refused to withdraw his hand and continued to smirk.
Both of them slowly realised how close they were standing. Khushi supporting herself on the platform with her hands, one of her hands still holding the jalebi whose syrup had spread over her fingers and Arnav leaning against her with his one hand on her mouth and the other on the platform preventing her free hand from pushing him away.
Arnav was the first one to realise the awkwardness of the situation and slowly, easing out, he moved away from Khushi, giving them both some space to'breathe.
Khushi, who still looked a little spaced out, was brought back to her senses when she saw Arnav's lips moving. Was he speaking something?
Unable to decipher what he was trying to say all she could say was,"Huh?"
"Khushi don't act dumb! I am saying it for the last time'we need to talk." Said Arnav, determination in his voice.
