CHAPTER X
Arnav pushed past the officers.
"I am sorry Di but he is not the man you think he is" arnav cried
"Is this about...about him and Khushi"anjali asked her brother.
Arnav looked at her with shock
"Its about him trying to persue my wife when i told him to back off" arnav said through gritted teeth.
Anjali walked towards the chair and sat down.
"I am so sorry Choti, this is all my fault" she said
"Di what are you saying...that you knew about shyam?"
Anjali nodded and her head rested in her hands.
"I dont understand Di? You knew but didnt kick him out...how could you do this to khushi, you know how important she is to me, you better explain and fast, as my wife needs looking for" arnav shouted.
"Choti please dont be angry with me,these past few months have tormented me. You see i remember seeing Khushis father speaking to Shyam outside the temple one day. That day we went to their house to ask payal to marry akash, i saw that he recognized me too. It was only when he was trying to say something and gOt worked up, that i realised the truth. It all clicked in to place...the amount of time he spent away went with exactly the times that khushi had a paying guest. See i was suspicious before that Khushis fiancee was also named Shyam and that he was a lawyer. And that day it slotted in to place." she cried
"But di you of all people know exactly what i am like...you stood back and watched as i ruined Khushis life?" arnav asked
"But choti, i did it all for you." she continued "i could see how much khushi meant to you, i wanted you to spend time together as i knew you were perfect for each other. I know even if you did not then, that the minute you laid eyes on her you fell in love with her. When you brought her home as your bride i figured things out on my own why you did it. I did go through a stage thinking the same as you about khushi, but i watched her and shyam closely and realised that it was only you she loved." she added
"But di the pregnancy?" arnav asked
"Not true...i thought it would make him fall in love with me again,but it didnt did it, it just pushed him further away" anajali sobbed
"Its ok Anjali" naani said from behind putting her hands on anjalis shoulders.
"Do you have any idea of his where abouts miss anjali" the officer said
Anjali shook her head unable to comprehend the situation.
"Come on anjali think god damn it" shouted arnav
"I am afraid you will have to accompany us to the station miss anjali for some questioning" intterupted the officer.
Anjali and Naani headed off to the police station with one of the officers, whilst Arnav and Manorama talked to the inspector.
"Does he have other propertys arnav" asked the inspector.
"not that i am aware of. Why do you keep asking so many questions, lets just go and find her." arnav shouted in frustration
"hello hi bye bye...arnav remember me and your uncle went to stay in his mothers house for our wedding anniversary whilst his mother was away a few years back. Maybe he has taken her there, i have a key in my room" Manorama piped up.
*in the police car on route to shyams mothers home*
God damn it i swear if anything happens to her i will kill him arnav thought. He was quite surprised how close by the house was when he got to it. It seemed small and run down, a complete contrast to what he would of expected manorama to stay in.
"Hello hi bye bye" manorama exclaimed as she got out the car. "This is certainly the place but its not how i remember" she added.
"Let us go in first mr arnav" the inspector insisted.
Arnav nodded reluctantly as Manorama held on to his arm.
Suddenly he heard a piercing scream.
Arnav pushed everyone aside and raced up to the house
"KHUSHI!" he shouted.
"Hello brother in law, what a nice surprise" came a voice behind him
"wheres my wife, dont you touch her" arnav grimaced. "theres police outside they will kill you on my say so"
"you still think you control everyone dont you brother in law" shyam laughed, and with this took out a megaphone and shouted out "you come anywhere near this house i shall kill them both" he laughed again. "they cant help you now arnav" he added
"What do you want with khushi." Arnav cried
"I want her as my wife" shyam said sternly.
Arnav looked around the room, wondering how to control this situation his eyes fell on a revolver on the chair near by.
"Ok ok" he said unsure of if this plan would work.
"what do you need me to do to ensure mine and khushis safety" arnav asked.
"I want you to sign these divorce papers, i have made khushi do the same" Shyam smiled.
"I want to see khushi first and i want to see she is ok" arnav asked
With that Shyam went to another room and dragged khushi in by her hair, what he didnt realise was that Arnav had slipped the revolver in to his trousers quickly before his return.
Arnav looked at khushi who was unconsious.
"she is sleeping right now, so dont touch her." shyam sneered.
"i want to talk to her before i sign these" arnav insisted
Shyam reached for some water and began sprinkling it on khushis face.
Arnav clenched his fist tightly "its me who should be doing that" he thought angrilly.
Khushi woke up with a fright, at the sight of shyam in front of her, she looked dazily around and saw arnav in the room.
"Arnavji" she cried
"Arnav has given us permission to marry khushi" shyam smiled at her
She looked up at arnav to see him shake his head slowly.
"I just want to talk to khushi first" arnav persisted
"Ok i will wait by the door, but dont lay one finger on her" shyam shouted.
Arnav walked slowly towards khushi and sat in front of her.
"I love you khushi with all my heart, i always have done. I am sorry for any wrong doing i caused you" he winked as he said "i undertstand why shyam would be a better choice of husband, so to save your life i am going to sign the divorce papers, so you can be free, but always remember you are my life without you i would be nothing. he cried saying the last bit as he truley meant it.
Khushi nodded stunned at the truthfull ness of his last words.
With that Arnav walked over to the table and hesitantly signed the papers.
He looked over at shyam who was smiling from ear to ear.
Shyam walked towards khushi and helped her up. "See khushi he never really loved you, now we can marry and consuma..." he didnt get to say his last word as he fell to the ground.
Arnav dropped the gun on the floor and sunk to his knees.
He was in a state of shock, he couldnt believe he had shot his di's husband. Suddenly the weight lifted as khushis arms came from behind him
"Arnavji are you ok" she cried.
Arnav pulled her close to him as the officers ran in to the house.
"Arnavji its a bit inappropriate for us to hug like this" khushi smiled up to him
Arnav looked at her confused.
"WHat the...khushi i just saved your life i think that entitles me to hug my wife" he replied
"But arnavji we signed divorce papers, we are no longer married" khushi said sadly
"Well miss khushi gumari gupta, we shall just have to get married again wont we...if you will have me of course" he said as they walked out the house
"I love you so much Arnavji, of course i will marry you" Khushi replied.
"Hello hi bye bye, another wedding, what will the neighbours say" manorama exclaimed.
They all laughed as they headed off home.
COMING UP - THE PAST COMES BACK TO HAUNT ARNAV
