Hello everyone! Before you read the 4th part of this SS, I have two quick comments to make: One thank you to paridhipoddar who suggested me to write a scene about Amar and Khushi and their cute sibling relationship and two, thank you to Jayne who reminded me that in the Hindu customs, it is more accepted to cremate the body rather than bury it so I'm sorry if I offended anyone with that. Enjoy reading! And please, continue with your lovely comments and likes. 😊
"Khushi hand me that jalebi mix please." Amar said as he wiped his forehead, leaving a trail of flour across his temple. Smirking, Khushi handed her elder brother the mix, watching his futile attempts in making jalebis. Amar slowly poured the mix into the hot oil, being careful not to add too much or too little of it into the pan. Making a perfect swirl, he grabbed a spoon and pulled the jalebi out once it had turned crunchy and gotten a yellowish- gold tinge. "Yes!" He exclaimed with joy. His 49th attempt at making the perfect jalebi had worked!
Amar had sauntered into the kitchen about a half hour ago and stood watching Khushi's rapid jalebi talent in action. "Do you know how to make jalebis bhaya?" She had inquired gently.
Determined to show his macho man, I-can-do-anything personality, Amar had said, "Of course! Who doesn't know how to make jalebis? You know, I was a jalebi making champion back in the US."
"Really bhaya? That's amazing! Then you could definitely help me make these jalebis for Anjaliji's birthday party tonight."
"Oh crap", thought Amar, putting on a fake smile but trying to quickly think of a way to cover his tall tale. "I would love to help you Khushi but my arm is so sore from teaching Hari Prakash American football and I don't think I'll be able to assist you much. But you could definetely ask your husband for help, he's not doing anything."
Khushi looked up amused, thinking "Hmm, Bhaya is such a liar. How could he have taught Hari Prakashji football when HP and Nanheji were practicing ballroom dancing all morning?" "No no Bhaya", Khushi exclaimed to Amar's back. "Please come and help me, I really need the help of the jalebi making champion right now!"
Amar sighed as he looked at his hopeful little sister, begging him for help. How could he say no to her? Well, now he had to swallow his pride and admit the truth. However, this jalebi making process couldn't be that difficult right? If a clumsy Khushi could do it, Amar was sure that he could do it as well. This cockiness however has slowly melted away as Amar tried making his first jalebi. The mix had clumped up in a small ball in the oil instead of forming the swirl that Khushi was making with ease. Trying desperately to hide his embarrassment, Amar had tried seperating the clumped pieces and ended up burning all the jalebis in the pan.
"It's ok Bhaya, I can understand if you can't do it." Khushi had said with a smirk.
"No! It's just that... that... I haven't made jalebis in years. Let me make a couple and then I'll show you my true skills!" He had protested with a cheeky smile.
Amar was now grinning like a Cheshire cat, looking down upon his first perfect jalebi in half an hour. "Good job Bhaya! That totally did not take you 30 minutes to complete Mr. Jalebi Champion!" Khushi scolded with a smile on her face.
"Ok, I confess." he sighed. "This was the first time I've ever made jalebis. But since I've finally made one the right way, I want you to have it." With that, Amar fed his perfect little sister the perfect little jalebi he had made with his own hands, hoping that this was just the first to many gifts he would bestow upon Khushi.
Arnav, feeling deprived of attention from his wife in the craziness of the birthday party, had gone in search for her and found her in the kitchen with her brother. There she was, in a green sari, completely covered in flour being fed jalebis by her brother. Next to her stood her brother, Amar Chopra, the no nonsense doctor with the heart of a child, feeding his sister much like a father. Arnav had not wanted to intrude on this special and private moment between siblings but Amar had seen Arnav through the corner of his eye, and run up to drag his brother-in-law into the kitchen.
"No way man! You are not getting out of this experience! Have you ever made jalebis?" Amar asked a flabbergasted Arnav.
"What the..?No!" "Well you're making some now!" Amar said, silencing Arnav's protests by shoving some non-sugared jalebis into Arnav's mouth. Glaring at Amar, Arnav quickly chewed the delicious jalebis and agreed to help, for the sake of his exhausted wife. It was quite a sight at first, the Laad Governer and Amar on their knees, their sleeves rolled up, kneading the dough and heating the oil.
"Khushi, be careful!" Khushi heard every two seconds when she went too close to the stove or ran to get something. "Hay Devi Maiyya! Why did I ask these two to help me? They've taken over the kitchen!" Khushi thought as she sat down, finally allowing herself a break. This was a bad idea though because in five minutes, the serious work of making jalebis had turned into a competition of who could make the best jalebis, with Khushi being the judge. Both Amar and Arnav made one big jalebi at a time and ran forward to allow Khushi to taste- test them. At first, for fun, Khushi had picked either one of them but as they became relentless to win, she started declaring a tie, wishing to leave this madness immediately.
"No fair!", Arnav whined the first time a tie was called. "You can't do that!" With that, he had run back to the stove, with Amar dashing behind him. Khushi looked at these two men with a smile on her face. "Thank you Devi Maiyya", she thought. "Thank you for giving me such a loving brother and husband. You may have taken from me before, but what you have given me now is the greatest gift. Joyful tears slowly made their way down her face as they started playfully bantering again over who would be the jalebi champion.
