As time flew by, things started to look up in Naina's life just as Raj had predicted. She did really well in her 10th standard and got permitted to the high school with quite high grades much to the annoyance and horror of the inmates of Shekhawat Mansion. Letters from US became her only way of contacting Raj as their time never matched online. Any delay in those letters used to make her overtly anxious and her uneasiness was not taken lightly by Mrs. Peterson or Mrs. Shekhawat for that matter. So every time holidays approached she was sent to work for some NGOs or to look after the ailing Mrs. Tandon in London who was supposed to be a distant relative of Mrs. Shekhawat and who reportedly liked the companionship of young Naina. Though Naina not totally unaware of the intentions of Mrs. Peterson and Mrs. Shekhawat , continued to do all her duty unfazed. It also did her some good as she could save up some money for her future. She could vaguely understand the necessity and the urgency with which they acted in order to send her away whenever a letter that suggested the brief arrival of Rajveer. At first Naina felt bad at the deceptive ways of Mrs. Peterson and Mrs. Shekhawat but slowly she got used to all their ploys to keep her away from meeting Raj. According to Mrs.Shekhawat, there was an old saying in Hindi that "Ghee and aag shouldn't be kept together."
Naina tere kajraare hai
Naino pe hum dil haare hai
Anjaane hi tere naino ne
Waade kiye kai saare hai
Saanson ki lay
Madham chalein
Tose gaye barasega saawan
Barasega saawan
Jhoom jhoomke
Do dil aise milenge
Aaoge jab tum ho saajana
Angana phool khilenge
Sometimes their desperate ways made Naina to take a look at her own reflection in the mirror which often added a little more confidence in her above average looks. In fact in the past 10 years she had transformed into a very pretty lass. Anybody would agree that she not only looked good but beautiful in her own ways with hazel nut eyes which had the correct amount of innocence and mystery in them. Naina had never cared for her looks but then she was a girl of 19 and anybody of her age would secretly want to be the first to gain the affections of the man of her life. But she didn't care... sometimes she wished she could meet Raj as easily as before. But the changing attitudes of Mrs. Shekhawat told her that things can never go back to those days when life had been easier ...much easier. Naina jumped up from her bed in London and as she looked out of the window, she could see nothing but darkness outside. She could also feel the heavy wind blowing fluttering the leaves of the adjacent trees. This is the second night in a row that she had jumped up from her sleep. It had been the same dream that had tormented her even last night. She could feel her cheeks growing cherry red. She switched on the bed side lamp in her inconspicuous room that she shared with one of her college mates. Yes, she was in college then, doing her graduation in English Literature and secretly nurtured the dream of becoming an author.
She took out the photograph that had reached her couple of days back by courier along with a letter.. She smiled at the photograph and scolded the handsome face there; "Oh for god's sake let me sleep. Your letters, your photos...in fact your name is enough to drive me crazy. Now stop smiling like that and let me have some peace. Have mercy on me please. Stop showing up in my dreams and don't drive me nuts. I am already enough in love with you and I daydream. So I don't need you to intrude my dreams in this manner. In a manner that I can't even tell myself." said Naina once again blushing at her thoughts and how wild her dreams had become. She still shuddered at the thought how in her dreams that handsome face had slowly taken her in his arms and slowly whispering romantic lines, slowly and silently moved his lips along her jaw line, lingering in the hollow beneath her ears , caressing her face...singing in her ears only for her...'..brushing off her tears with his lips'. I should immediately stop dreaming about him before it became even more embarrassing. Naina thought silently. But she couldn't help thinking about him even for a moment.
Chanda ko taaku raaton mein
Hai zindagi tere haanthon mein
Palkon pe jhilmil taarein hain
Aana bhari barsaaton mein
Sapnon ka jahaan
Hoga khila khila
Barasega saawan
Barasega saawan Jhoom jhoom ke
Do dil aise milenge
Angana phool khilenge
Angana phool khilenge
She didn't know whether she should be glad or not as she was to spend her Christmas at Nottingham palace as her plans had to be cancelled because of Mrs.Tandon's sudden trip to India. She had always wanted to visit the country where from her parents hailed. But she couldn't manage as her schedule was already packed when she was informed by Mrs. Tandon. May be some other time. She sighed and thought.
Naina wasn't that excited to visit the Shekhawats because she knew she would feel absolutely like a fish out of water there and the letter she had in her hands clearly suggested the sender's inability to make it that year.
What a boring Christmas I am going to have this year. Why did you do this to me God?
This was my only chance to meet him in the past 3 years and yet ''..
She flipped over the bed and groaned as she tried to sleep as she slumped into yet another deep slumber with all those dreams taking off where they had been stalled earlier.
Naina woke up at around 7am in the morning and then rushed off to the bathroom to brush her teeth and take a quick shower. Her roommate was supposed to start off her holidays earlier than her with her boyfriend so Naina had been staying all by herself for the last couple of days. She hurried through her clothes as she packed some of them her bag and pulled out a denim trouser and a white top hugging her body. She brushed through her long brown tresses and then grabbed her bag and set off for her college. She was about to set off for Nottingham, after her college. So as she entered the college campus she could hear the bustles for the preparations for the forthcoming Christmas. As she stood in front of the big Christmas tree she sighed and thought that the Christmas was going to be really boring for her that year. As the last bell announced the time for students to depart with onset of vacations' Naina bid goodbye and hugged her friends wishing them a Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year on her behalf. For the past 3 years or so, even though Naina couldn't meet Rajveer and had pined for him relentlessly yet her stay in London actually did her pretty good. Even though she had her own laptop yet the transatlantic timings hardly seemed to match. So even if they chatted, one or the other had to log off pretty early due to their busy schedules. Naina's stay in London had not only instilled a sense of responsibility and confidence in her, it also showed her the tremendous amount opportunities all around her as if just waiting for her to grab them with her both hands. She knew perfectly that one day she has to muster all the courage up and speak to Sir Shekhawat to let her pursue her own career on her own terms. But Naina knew that the prospective breaking away from the Shekhawats and to be on her own would definitely prove to be pretty challenging given the nature of the Shekhawats. They might even sever all relations with her. Not that she cared much and this was not because she was an ungrateful girl. No, it was not the case. But Naina's relationship with the Shekhawats was not something that could be understood easily; it was a weird combination of awe, suspicion, feeling of superiority, intimidation and many more such complex human emotions that hardly qualify as the reasons to the warming up of the heart. If it hadn't been for Rajveer and his constant pushing her to stand up for her own dreams, Naina would never have gotten into the college she was presently studying.
Naina's shibboleth in life has always been;
"Climb every mountain, search high and low
Follow every byway, every path you know.
Climb every mountain, ford every stream,
Follow every rainbow, 'til you find your dream!
A dream that will need
all the love you can give,
Every day of your life
for as long as you live.
Climb every mountain, ford every stream,
Follow every rainbow, 'til you find your dream!"
* Music by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II
From the musical "The Sound of Music" (1965)
I know that the chapter is short but it's mostly a filler...many more twists are just round the corner. So don't feel bored...😛
