"Arre Yash, why are you so sad?" Meera, his girlfriend asked. As she dropped her stuff on her desk which was behind his. Yash looked gloomily at the band on his colleagues wrist and Meera understood.
"Come on Yash, don't be sad. You are not the only one who hasn't got a sister." Yash was about to reply when Adi came and also showed his Rakhi. Yash eyes widened with shock.
"Adi, where did you get this from? You don't have a sister, then?"
"Now I have. Pinky must have told her so Geet came to me first thing in the morning with one. I felt so touched. Now I can also be a proud brother." This made Yash even gloomier. He was probably the only one in office without a Rakhi on his wrist.
"Yeah, you are so lucky. I wish I also had a sister." The words slipped from his mouth before he could stop them. Adi's smile disappeared and Meera also felt sorry. Someone took Yash's hand and he looked up as he felt something tied to it.
"How can you think of not having a sister, when I am around?" Geet smiled brightly and popped some sweets into Yash's mouth after doing an Express Aarti. Yash has tears of happiness in his eyes. He simply grabbed Geet and gave her his first brotherly hug. He had no gift on him so he took off the ring from his little finger and put it on Geet's finger. Their boss and MD chose right this moment to make his appearance. His hawk like eyes caught the sight and he clenched his fist.
"YASH, ADI, my cabin, NOW." Both men jumped and rushed after their MD. Before entering his cabin, Maan heard someone call him Dusht Daanav and he knew that the compliment was meant for him only.
Geet returned to the reception, where Pinky was munching on biscuits.
"Thank you Pinky for telling me about. Yash is so happy now." Pinky giggled.
"Waise, I don't think there is anyone left in office who hasn't a Rakhi on their wrist." Geet said but slowed down. Her small brain worked hard and then she rushed off to confirm her doubt.
While Adi was gone with his file, Maan handed Yash trice the amount of work. To his annoyance, Yash was still happy. This angered him even more.
"Yash, you are also going to do overtime and complete the Sharma Project."
"Ok sir, Now I have Geet with me, I can do anything."
"May I came in sir?" Geet popped in her head as Yash left. Maan looked at her and saw her twisting her duppatta, a clear sign of her being nervous.
"What is it?" he asked rather rudely. Geet hesitated.
"Sir, show me your hands."
"What?" Maan made a confused face.
"Your hands, sir." Geet showed him her own to clarify what she wanted. He showed her and her eyes widened in shock. Before he could ask, she was gone.
Later during lunch, Maan rang for the peon to get him his food. When the door opened, Maan noticed that the hall outside his cabin was deserted.
"Where is everyone?" Maan asked.
"Yash sir is giving a treat in the canteen for everyone. After all, Geet ma'am made him so happy today." Maan got up and ran to the canteen. The image of Yash putting a ring on Geet's finger was killing him.
"I saw it myself. Maan sir's wrist was empty. Noone tied a Rakhi to him." Maan stopped in his tracks and looked at his wrists. He had always felt a little odd being the only boy in the neighborhood not having a sister. All girls saw him with different eyes.
"This is unfair. What now Geet baby?" Manisha asked.
"What else? What ever has to be done, I will do it myself." Geet lifted the last Rakhi. Maan felt as if the floor was disappearing und his feet. No, she couldn't be so cruel. She couldn't do this to him.
Maan ran off, out of KC and sat in his car. He drove towards an unknown destination, while his heart was shattered. He had always liked Geet. Since the day she had joined office, Maan had felt different towards her. His own shyness towards girls prevented him from showing his feelings and he realized that it had been a huge mistake. Maan put his hand into his pocket and removed a small box. It contained the ring he was given by Dadima to give it to the girl he wished to marry. Oh, how he had wished of taken up the courage earlier.
Two hours passed by and Maan sat still behind the staring of his car, lost in thought. The ring of his phone brought him back. GEET was the name on the display. He didn't pick it up. Maan closed his eyes only to find Geet's images being played by his mind. Her innocence, cuteness, beauty and also shyness were the trades he loved in her. Till date, he always got what he wanted so why not now? He had to try. After placing the ring back in its box, Maan sped to KC in the highest speed he could manage.
Geet was restless. She was walking back and forth with the Rakhi in her hand. Where Maan sir disappeared to? Point seven, the entire office was empty with the exception of Geet, who was waiting for Maan in his office. Once he made sure that everyone was gone, Maan walked up to his office.
"Sir, where were you? Do you know how worried I was?" Geet rushed to him, concern written all over her face.
"Geet, I need to talk to you." Maan pulled her to the sofa and both sat.
"Yes sir?"
"Geet, I find this really difficult to say but please understand that my feelings are genuine. I never realized I felt like this for you till today." Geet looked confused.
"Geet, I want to bind you in the same relationship that bound you with Yash toaday." Geet was so shocked that she jumped up and took a few steps back.
"Look, I know this is hard but I promise I will always keep you happy. You will never have a reason to complaint, I '" But Geet's expression made him stop. She was extremely troubled. She didn't know what to think and tears filled her eyes.
"But sir, I never felt this way for you." Geet uttered in a low voice.
"I know but maybe one day you will." Geet backed off further, making Maan's hope sink further and further.
"No, this is worng. I can't. I'" she looked him into his sad eyes.
"I have always loved you but in another way." This broke Maan's heart completely. He felt ashamed now. The ring in his hands was worthless now.
"Then I am sorry. Take this as a gift for you and Yash. I am happy for you but don't insult my love for you by tying a Rakhi on my wrist."
"WHAT" Geet screamed so loudly that Maan took a step back. Geet looked at the ring and understood now.
"Sir, I tied Rakhi to Yash today, it is not as you are thinking."
"Oh my god. What? And then the ring'?"
"He didn't have a gift so'" The words got stuck in her throat. Realisation dawned on both and Maan felt highly embarrassed at his misconception of Geet's and Yash's relationship. Geet was also shy, realizing that Maan had actually proposed to her. She hugged him tighly.
"This", Geet lifted the Rakhi.
"Did you think if was from me to you?" Maan nodded and made Geet laugh.
"Actually, I couldn't convince any girl in the office to tie a Rakhi so I wanted to give this to you for when you find yourself a sister." Once she placed the wrist band in Maan's pocket, there was silence. Geet felt conscious of her position all of a sudden and wanted to get away but Maan didn't let her. After hours of tension, the end was so happy. Maan still held Geet by her waist and swayed slowly to silent music. Then, he left her suddenly and took the ring. He didn't ask with words but with eyes if he could put it on Geet's finger. She nodded shyly and forwarded her hand.
"I am so glad this worked out so well. Now we two have a lot to talk about." Maan said as they both left office together, hand in hand.
