***
Khirad and her mom live in Hyderabad and Khirad's mom is dying from cancer, when the widowed mother reaches out to her brother, who is settled in Karachi - Baseerat, his wife and son Ashar (obviously with all traits of the US returned charming male lead).
Baseerat feels guilty from not having stayed in touch with his sister over the years and brings her to Karachi, along with Khirad. The sister falls gravely sick, and Baseerat promises to take care of his niece by proposing marriage between Ashar and Khirad.
Ashar's best friend is Sara with all the makings of an obsessive friend, who owing to their childhood friendship blindly assumes that Ashar will marry her - which of course is not the way Ashar sees it. When Sara hears news of Ashar's marriage to Khirad, she turns suicidal, and attempts to take her life, but is saved eventually with people finding her at the nick of time.
Meanwhile, Baseerat's wife is against the marriage too and Ashar himself does not wish to be tied down to a woman who is by no means a match to his suave, urban ways of life.
Baseerat convinces everyone and with much resignation the wedding takes place at home in the presence of Khirad's dying mother. Shortly, Khirad's mom passes away and Khirad becomes a shut clam, withdrawing from the new life and the people she comes to live with.
In the days that follow, Khirad overhears Ashar tell Sara that Khirad can never be that companionable and equal partner he would like her to be. As a result, her ire rises and her ego is grimly stoked. Khirad feels she has been forcibly thrust into Ashar's life and keeps her distance from him at all times.
While Khirad and Baseerat bond for all the lost time, Baseerat becomes ill and leaves Khirad all to herself, after he asks Ashar to give Khirad all of life's happiness. After his death, Baseerat's wife appears to have a change of heart and promises Khirad to be the mother, she has lost.
Ashar takes interest in Khirad and initiates actions to show his fondness, once she comes to live with him in hi room. He learns that she is educated and notices her refined ways.
Of course, Sara turns villainous at best, and tries to keep Ashar from bonding with Khirad, by whisking him away for impromptu dinners and never forgets to highlight her low upbringing which Ashar forbears, in compassion for his childhood friend.
Ashar begins seeing Khirad in new light, despite his initial prejudices and eventually falls in love with her. She in-turn reciprocates and they are now happily married and more of an adorable couple.
Ashar suggests Khirad to enroll for higher studies and she enrolls in a nearby university. Khirad discovers friendship in the younger student circle and for reasons unknown, Ashar is threatened by her male friend Khizer, who also happens to be Sara's cousin; Khizer is madly in love with sara only to face constant rejection due to her own affections for Ashar. Ashar turns out to be insecure about their relationship and his mood-swings remain a puzzle to her, for he never comes out with his scruples.
In a get-together where Ashar is planning to join them later at Sara's house, Khirad and her mom-in-law arrive only to find Khizer already there. Khirad is asked to prepare some dishes and Khizer helps out. He purposefully spills something on Khirad's dress and using that to his benefit, pulls Khirad's dupatta off and helps her clean herself, when the entire family walks in on them, which seemingly comes across as an intimate moment between the two. As if on cue, Ashar arrives there, right in time for the showdown.
The family declares them as an illicit couple and Khizer comes out saying that they needn't hide their affections any more, which terribly confuses Khirad. Ashar's mom castigates her leaving khirad behind at Sara's place. When Khizer finds himself alone with Khirad, he comes out with the truth. That it was a ploy - which would uproot Khirad's presence from Ashar's life - into which he was bought into by Ashar's own mom, in return for an offer to study in the states. Khirad finds her way home, only to be thrown out without an audience with Ahsar (Ashar is not at home) and realizes it was Ashar's mom's revenge for coming into their lives and for her decimating the vision she had for Ashar's life. It crumbles Khirad to come to terms with a sly, scheming mother-in-law who was far from being a mother to her.
A pregnant Khirad manages to go back to Hyderabad broken and depressed. Ashar continues to refuse taking her calls, despite the number of times she reaches out to him at office and at home. She goes into premature labor and gives birth to a baby girl: Hareem. At this time, she decides to start living for her baby and hard walls against the feelings of abandonment and betrayal from Ashar. Sara remains in Ashar's life, but he pulls into his shell and lives an ascetic life.
Four and half years pass and Khirad finds out about Hareem's heart condition, that requires an open heart surgery. She reaches her rope's end before she reaches out to Ashar as her last resort. She confronts him and states all proof that Hareem is indeed Ashar's daughter - of which, he had not been cognizant of in all those years. She doesn't hear from Ashar for the next four days while she is staying in Karachi and it begins to worry her.
The next day, Hareem is playing outside the hospital, where Ashar lands and she recognizes him as her 'picture wala papa'. The father and daughter hug just as Khirad comes out and Khirad takes her away to see the doctor. Ashar finally breaks his silence and lashes out in anger to Khirad, for keeping his daughter away from him for all those years.
