"It's the kind that grows on you" Geet said wistfully, and Aashi's forehead crinkled in response. She must have imagined it certainly. Though Geet's lips didn't move an inch, she thought she heard the name roll off her lips into that tight silence between them. But then there was always the overactive imagination of hers - a mercurial trait that was either a boon or bane of being a professional writer. Occupational hazard some say. And it wasn't fair to Geet that she had the weirdest instinct about her future-but-now-possibly-ex sister-in-law to being one of the bases that would make for a home run between Maan and her.
"Wait...are you guys related?" She asked making Geet look up to her the same instant.
Geet's eyes appeared thoughtful for a moment, looking away and she casually shrugged.
"No...not really...I mean...I have heard of him" Geet nearly stuttered as she spoke, however, she soon managed to recover just as quickly and added,"But I don't know him or anything"
Just then, a chorus of women broke into a "There he is", "Here he comes" in the living room, making the two ladies in the kitchen crane their necks and check out the sudden rush of movement there. More shouts and squeals came their way. How juvenile?, Aashi thought, right when another deep drawl that could only stand for trouble and mischief greeted her. Of course, it could only be him.
"Oh!...where is my sweetheart?" She heard and for a moment Aashi assumed he was referring to her, holding a breath stiff in her chest and she pushed Geet aside to sneak a look at him. He was everything his Sweety aunty had described and everything she hadn't. It was some sight taking in his height, his mound of muscle and walking with his arms spread wide towards the woman with silver-grey hair parked in the wheelchair. Not his Daadima. Intriguing it was, the way his smile kept up with the warmth in his eyes. And his eyes...All those years of laboring with the dictionary to only find herself stumped looking for a word befitting the glint of charm there. Somehow she could sense the growing knowledge that there was nothing pretentious about this man as she watched him sit down at the old lady's feet and have his hair ruffled by her.
"Look, he is here..." With her eyes still on him, she ushered Geet to her side with an unintelligible thrill flitting inside her.
To be contd...
