Chapter 4: A Brand New World

Akash, Khushi, and Payal sat on the temple stairs, contemplating what to do now that they were jobless, homeless, and basically everything-less. Stretching out to rest his head on the concrete steps, Akash looked at the two sisters who were worrying their respective dupattas. It was amazing how alike they were sometimes, he thought, yet so different.

"So what now," he asked.
Khushi looked back at him before turning away, biting her nails in nervousness, "It's all my fault," she began again.
Akash rolled his eyes as he sat up, "can we not go through that again." Khushi looked at him, wonder written on her face. He turned to Payal who was smiling at him fondly, "what?!"

"You are way different when you're not around that Laad governor," Khushi stated, "does he make you nervous too?"
"Really? Wait, what?"
"Never mind! Anywho, what do we do?" Khushi looked away, "we have no money, and we're essentially homeless."
"And I repeat for the final time," Akash asserted, "It's not your fault Khushi."
Payal patted Khushi on the back comfortingly/ "You know what," she spoke up, "I want to change my name." Khushi and Akash jerked simultaneously, turning to gape at her. "What?" Akash finally asked.
Payal shrugged, "there's no use being a Gupta if the Gupta's refuse to be family. So, I want to change my name."
Akash cocked his head, "that...makes sense. Yeah, it makes sense. So if the Raizada's refuse to be family-"
"You're the one that ran away jeeju."
"Same thing, anyway, so then technically, since I'm out here by myself, then I can be whoever I want."
"Uh-uh," Payal nodded, "but I like Akash."
"Well I can always change my last name."
"You both realize this is ridiculous, right," Khushi interjected.
"No!" Payal refuted, she turned to smile fondly at Akash, "it's romantic..."
Khushi looked at the two stare at each other with ridiculously huge grins on their faces, romantic? Seriously? Well, there were all those shows where the leads changed their names and got amazing new livest....
"Ok!" she agreed, "let's change our names." She beamed at the couple next to her, "guys...GUYS!"

............

Akash came to a stop as they wandered toward the government office, "wait!"
The sisters exchanged a glace, "what happened Akash?" Payal asked.
He grinned at the familiar addressing before answering, "I have one last thing to do as Akash Raizada." A mischievous beam formed on Akash's face as he dragged the two sisters to an ATM. Pulling out his wallet he slipped in the shiny card, grinning as he began punching in numbers. He handed the notes to Payal as the machine spit them out, "my salary, Khushi's salary, urm
... emotional damage for me, for Khushi, and since they used to love us so much, how's about a tip."
The two sisters looked at him in wonder, "Jeeju," Khushi finally dared to ask, "What are you doing?"

"Well, they probably thought I'd be back in a while, so they didn't think to block my cards. And considering we're going through this entire trauma because of them, we mind as well get compensation!" Akash grinned at his brilliance as the two women continued staring in astonishment, was this seriously Akash?

The glint in Arnav Singh Raizada's eyes told him that he wouldn't have it easy today, taking a deep breath he braced himself, recovering from the initial shock. He'd anticipated this actually, even before the whole plan came up. Sooner or later his brother would figure out where he'd disappear to, and maybe he'd show up to yell and show him just how he was still in charge. Except, Akash mused, he wasn't.

He smirked slightly as he realized his brother was about to meet the new and improved Akash. Not Akash Singh Raizada who meekly and good naturedly took everything his older cousin brother doled out, but Akash Mehta

Akash Mehta who was proactive, territorial, he could even be snarky. Akash was a confident man, and he knew what he had to his advantage.

"Akash. What the hell is wrong with you?" Arnav thundered, "Do you even know how long we've been looking for you?"
"Must've not been looking hard enough then Mr. Raizada," Akash cut through, "because we've been here all along." A strange satisfaction mixed in with the guilt that seeped through Akash's veins when he saw the momentary hurt flash in his brother's eyes at the unfamiliar addressing. Reminding himself it would all be worth it, he surged forward, "anyway, it seems we'll be doing business together, so I think it would be best for us to forget the past and move past it." He held out a hand before Arnav could begin speaking again, "I'm Akash Mehta, vice president of Anagh, welcome to Mumbai Mr. Raizada."

Arnav glared at the extended hand for what seemed like hours before forcing himself to swallow the emotions rushing around his head and meeting the grasp, the touch reassuring him it was all real. Nodding slowly he pumped their hands up and down, "happy to be here," he said robotically, sinking back into the polite businessman demeanor he'd adopted.
Akash smiled in a seemingly nonchalant manner as Karan appeared from wherever he had disappeared to, tugging Khushi next to him. "Mr. Raizada! You've met Akash, wonderful!" he exclaimed.
"We've met-" Arnav began to explain, but he was cut off by a tongue in cheek Akash who seemed to be enjoying his brother's discomfort, "I'll introduce you to the rest of our family," he offered.
Our? Arnav thought, whose? Him and Akash? Karan and Akash?

Arnav nodded hesitantly; did Karan not know anything about his best friend? His gaze wandered off of Karan to the captivating form beside him, her face held no noticeable reaction to his presence. His eyes unwittingly wandered down her body, taking in the bright lehenga once again; the gold blouse was cropped smaller than he had ever dared imagine, sleeveless on top of that, the pink to red hues reflected the rooms light, casting a glow around her.

Breathtaking, just like always. But what truly stole his breath was the sight of her hand clasped firmly in Karan's, fingers nestled snugly between his as they stood staring back at him like he was some experiment in a science lab. And boy did he feel like one, an experiment who had no idea what was coming next, and he didn't like it one bit.

"This is my wife, Payal Mehta," Akash's voice broke through Arnav's thoughts as he focused on his brother, watching as Akash tugged Payal to stand between him and Karan. Payal smiled up at him, folding her hands in greeting. Arnav simply stared, kicking into automode as he began to go through the process of greeting his bhabhi just like he would greet any stranger's wife, hello, nice to meet you.
"That," Akash gestured towards Karan and Khushi, "is my saali dear, Khushi."
Arnav's clenched his fists fell to his sides as he looked over to her again, finding her leaning easily on Karan as she looked his way. For a moment he thought he saw the flash of familiarity in her eyes, the warm gaze he'd ached to see for years. And just like that the moment ended; evading the questioning in his gaze with a flippant expression as she smiled politely at him, turning to whisper in Karan's ear before walking away.

He stood staring after her, the drone of Akash introducing the rest of Anagh barely registering as his eyes attempted to follow the flashes of pink and red as it flurried around the room.
"So Mr. Raizada, what do you think."
Arnav grunted as the hand fell on his shoulder, reviving him from the daze he had fallen into.
"What?"
"Can we meet in a week to discuss the business side of things?" Karan asked patiently. Arnav glared at him, flashes of Karan's hand caressing hers erupting in his vision as he looked at the hand that still rested on his shoulder.
"Don't. Touch. Me." His hard voice pulled a cloud of tension over the small group that still stood in the middle of the dance floor. The three men stood stock still as his glare fell on the two men with waning smiles. Karan jerked his hand away, giving Akash a pointed look before turning to face Arnav again, "I'm sorry Mr. Raizada," he said in a suddenly cool voice.
"I suggest we get off the dance floor, our talk shouldn't affect those who are here to have fun," Akash laid a reassuing hand on top of Karan's shoulder as he pointed the way with the other. Not saying a word Arnav turned to stalk off into the first dark corner he could find. The two men followed him, soundlessly whispering even as he attempted to ignore them.

Arnav came to a stop only after ascending the stairs and standing in front of a huge window. Darkness had descended outside; moonlight streamed through the clear glass, outlining his form as he stood facing away from the two men, hands once again buried in his pockets.

"Explain to me," he bit out, "why I've been desperately searching for my brother for the past four years, while he was busy playing dandiya in a ridiculously decorated room."

"Akash Mehta," a sharp voice replied, "my name, is Akash Mehta, and I would appreciate you remembering that from now on Mr. Raizada."

He turned sharply to face his little brother, the little brother who suddenly had the gall to not only disappear for four years, but to be completely unabashedly unashamed about it.

"Stop playing games Akash," he retorted, "we aren't children anymore."

"Exactly," Akash replied looking him squarely in the eyes, "we're not children and I'm not playing any games. My name is Akash Mehta, it's who I am. You'll do well to remember that."

Arnav took in a deep breath, he wanted to play games, fine. "Let's discuss business then," he said turning to the silent Karan, "The official proposal will reach you once I get back to Mumbai Mr. Nigam. You and...Mr. Mehta here can look it over and then we can meet later to sign the contract."

Karan nodded in agreement, "great," he said, "now let's get back to the party." He turned around, waiting patiently as Akash sent Arnav a last meaningful look before joining his friend.

Arnav swallowed hard as he watched them both burst into laughter, scuttling down the stairs to once again join the mash of bodies moving around on the dance floor.

A sharp hiss escaped his lips as the cold water splashed into his suit from his face, grabbing at a towel on the counter he rubbed away furiously. He glared at the reflection in the bathroom mirror. Nothing was helping, not the drinks he'd swigged down, and not the cold water he'd just splashed onto his face. Everytime he closed his eyes the ridiculous montage began again, burning his eyelids as he saw the images over and over again. Akash, Payal...Khushi...with Karan.

Flinging away the towel he stepped back, turning his back to his reflection as he cursed, disgusted with himself. Four years later and she still affected him in that peculiar way of hers. His form tensed as he sensed the familiar tinkling of somebody's anklets racing down the hall towards where he stood. Swinging open the door he stumbled out in his haste, catching the end of the red netted duppatta as it flew away from him. He tugged at it, sending its startled owner crashing into his arms, "you," he whispered deathly, "have a lot of explaining to do."

This is such a great story all the characters except for Arnav seemed to have been improved greatly. Arnav seems a lot like the guy on the show. Which I thinks adds more drama to the story.

I love Akash's boldness and courage as he stands up to his brother. Nice addition of Karan's character. Loved how Akash emptied the atm. Good for him.

There is such an amazing flow to your writing. It leaves the writer wanting to read more. Beautifully written as is all your ff.

Thanks so much for the PM. Appreciate it kindly.

KF

PS: Do continue soon. No rush though. When you have time. Thanks again.
