Khushi gazed at the wary reflection in the mirror, realizing that for the first time in her life, she couldn't recognize the girl staring back at her. The mesmerizing, spirited glow, that once used to shine within her eyes, had transformed into a sea of black. There was no escape. It felt as if the darkness had engulfed her altogether. She was drowning. Drowning in her own guilt. She closed her eyes, gasping for air. Memories were haunting. It had been three years. And yet the pain felt like an open wound, slashing through her broken heart with each passing moment. After so many years, she had found the courage within her to come back. To return to the place where her life had ended. She dug her nails into her palms as the memories took control...
"No..." She whispered, her breath rushing out in a gasp. Her lips were quivering and the tears were threatening to flood her eyes any second. "Don't think about it Khushi... Pretend it never happened." But Khushi knew there was no point in lying to herself. The person she loved more than anyone else in the world was dead. And the worst part of it was that she was responsible for it...
She collapsed on the bed beside her, with a lump in her throat. I'm sorry Arnav... I'm so sorry... And with that, the tears that she had been trying to hide within her, dribbled down like heavy rain in a drought.
Khushi lay on her bed, the unstopping tears soaking her skin. Her eyes were red from crying, and her limbs weak from the light chill in the air. She was alone. There was no one beside her to place a comforting hand on her head. There was no one to tell her that it would be ok. Arnav would come back to her. There was no one to tell her that Arnav was still alive...that the events that occured three years ago were just a nightmare. One day, I'll wake up. Khushi tried to convince herself. One day, I'll find that Arnav is still right beside me...One day I'll hear his voice telling me how much he loves me. It will happen Khushi. Devi Mayyia cannot let you down like that... But no matter how much she tried to tell herself, she knew that nothing would be alright. She knew that there was no point in hoping. She had ruined her own life. And she had ruined his. She had killed him. I'm a murderer. She thought, despising herself all the more. I snatched his life away. I let Devi Mayyia take him away. I betrayed him. She bit her lip harder with every following thought, tasting her metallic blood. I don't deserve to live a life without him. She blinked, hating the tears which refused to cease. Your own fault... your own fault Khushi Raizada...Your own damn fault. The words echoed in her head, blaming her. Destroying the last part of her...and along with it, the last ounce of strength that she had left.
It had only been 1 week after their marriage. Khushi had insisted that they take a romantic night drive down the streets of delhi. For a while, everything had been fine. The calamity began with Khushi. "Please Arnav... let me try driving na? I'm sure it won't be that difficult! plus you're right beside me, to help!" Arnav had laughed it off, refusing. "No, I don't trust you!" She had frowned stubbornly before turning away from him. "Fine then! Don't talk to me! Hmph!" Arnav had simply shaken his head, with a light chuckle, upon looking at his wife in such a childish form. Khushi had had to work extra hard to keep up the expression of anger...until Arnav gave in at last. "Khushi?" There was no response. He sighed in defeat. "Oh fine! You can drive! But very slowly!" He stopped the car, escorting Khushi out from the passenger seat and helping her into the drivers seat. "It's easy. Let me explain-" Khushi shot him an irritated look. "I want to figure it out myself! And I can!" She smiled a satisfied smile and turned towards the road. She placed her hand on the gears, preparing to change it. But the next second, she felt her heart stop. Arnav slowly traced his hand over hers, so that her hand was now underneath. "Have I ever told you how cute you look when you give me that satisfied smile...?" He murmured, leaning into her ear. Khushi had felt the shivers running up her spine at the sound of his husky voice. "Arnav... stop it... Please..." His lips gently touched her earlobe, causing a helpless Khushi to close her eyes. "Why should I...? You're my wife now sweetheart..." He reminded lovingly. Khushi could feel the butterflies flutter in her stomach at the word.
"Oh God... Arnav..." She whispered, leaning into him. For a moment, she had forgotten entirely where she was...and in which circumstances. "Thank you Khushi..." She turned towards him, slightly surprised by his words. "Why? What have I done?" He gave her a soft peck on her cheek, before completing his sentence. "Thank you for coming into my life."
It was then that Khushi made the worst mistake of her life...that she would regret for many years to come. She closed her eyes... and they were so lost in their own world, that they didn't notice that the gears had changed. Arnav snuggled into Khushi even further, placing a kiss on her forhead, eyes, and then finally her neck. Khushi gasped, shocked by his touch, as she accidentally pressed the accelerator. The car sped forward, startling the duo from their daydream. "KHUSHI! BREAK! PRESS THE BREAK!" Khushi felt rooted to the spot. Her heart was thumping wildly in her chest. "WHICH ONE??!" she cried, panic overwhelming her. But there was no answer to her question. It had all happened too fast. One moment, Arnav had been so close to her...right beside her... and the next?
The windshield glass was shattered, with blood covering every visible surface. Arnav's head bled profusely, as did Khushi's. The laughing, merry moments in their lives had ended so abruptly... so drastically. One mistake. It was one mistake, that changed Khushi's life...forever.
