34. Gearing Up

"Rudr can you help me with something?"

"Do you have to ask? I'm always at your service."

"Will you help me choose the dress for the party? Maan gifted me three and I can't decide which one to wear."

" So why didn't you ask Maan?"

"I did and he said that would like to see me in all three. " she made a pouting face, "may be I should mix and match!"

"Now, that would be a sight!" Rudr chuckled seeing the choices in front of him.

"And Daadi too cudn't choose, when I wore them and showed. She too said all three look good. But I so wanted Maan to select the dress for me because this is my first public appearance as his wife. I don't want to disappoint him."

"All rigt then, let us see if we can deduce your husbands choice! What is Maan's favorite color?"

"White." Geet said without a doubt as she thought a bout the collection of whites in his cupboard and the white salwar he selected for Annie way back.

"Okay, now what is his favourite color an you?"

Geet closed her eyes to concentrate. "Red!" she said triumphant remembering the appreciation in his eyes when she wore red salwar, the day after their marriage.

"So how about this one?" Rudr pointed. "not exactly white but closest in the lot and it has red too."

"Oh! Thank you Rudr. I'm sure this would be Maan's choice."

"Listen to your heart, Chotu. It will always show you the way. Where has the Maan of your heart gone to?"

"To invite the Kashyaps..." she looked down, biting her lower lip.

"What now?"

"I just hope everything will be fine...I mean they must be feeling bad!"

"Do you think Maan cant handle the situation? We men do manage to handle things even before we get married!"

Geet showed a pouting face and then said,"it's just...it is because I am the reason that I..."

"Chotu, think of it this way...Maan and Sameera knew each other all their life. Yet they did not marry...if that was meant to happen, wouldn't they be before now? Like you were meant for Maan, Sam too will find her life partner in someone else." He said with a secret smile.

"Yeah may be.."

"Come on enough worrying, little mamma! It's not good for junior."

Geet smiled indulgently as she placed a hand on junior. "Thank you Rudr!" Geet gathered her clothes to move away, then turned back, "Oh! I almost forgot ...do you wish to invite anybody? Do I need to call someone on your behalf?"

"Thank you Chotu...that wont be necessary." Then added in a soft voice as she walked away, "The one I want is already invited!"

Sasha...I mean ma'am do you think the rumour is true? That MK is married and this party is the celebration for that?"

"Can't you even keep track of the gossips going on in the office while I am away? Sasha asked with an attitude. "What use are you to me if you cant even dig the truth out of that small town girl, Miss.Hoshiarpur? Any ways I don't believe all this marriage rumour...MK or secret marriage, no chance at all."

"Wahi toh! If Geet wasn't absent this whole week I would have ferreted out the information from her. Pinky said she is absent because she is not keeping well." Tasha said happily feeling triumphant that she was able to get that information.

"Who is interested in that silly girl. I just wish she would go back where she came from. But wouldn't Mrs.A know?"

" She became so tight lipped after MK started working from home..." Tasha said as if still trying to solve the puzzle.

"There is definitely something going on. Oh! What a week I chose to go take leave!" Sasha lamented.

They were on their way to party with he only information that Maan Singh Khurana was celebrating something big.

Maan stopped in his track at the sight of his wife before him. She looked so beautiful. Each day, how cud she become more beautiful that the last? He wondered when she looked her best? Is it her sleep flushed face he woke up to see on his shoulder each morning, or is it her fresh dewy face she had after her bath? May be it is the simple elegance she had when she was dressed to go to the office or is it this perfectly groomed look she has as she was dressed to daze those who cast their eyes on her, with her beauty enhanced to perfection. Her hair was falling around her face in gentle curls calling attention to her glowing face. She was wearing a cream and maroon dress. She turned as she caught his reflection in the mirror and smiled... nothing could make his day perfect than the smile on her face and when that smile was at the pleasure of seeing him he felt humbled. He fingered the gift he had brought for her. He had learned from Daadi the dress she was going to wear. It was his favourite among the three. He would have told her that too but he saw her eyes straying towards another one and had left the choice to her. he wanted everything to be perfect for her. Today he was going to announce to the world that this wonderful woman was his. Geet may think herself unworthy but no one would suit him more than her. He admired the strength of her will, which made her rise above the trauma of her past. It may be true that she was not fully over the incident, but who would be when raped by her own...no this was too good a day to spoil with such thoughts...Now it was his aim to help her heal, heal her enough to accept his love for her and look forward to a life time with him. No, he would never let her go!Today he would claim for her the same respect that is bestowed on him. He would make her realize that she was precious to him, more precious than anything else in this world.

He moved towards her, his eyes shining with appreciation. "You look beautiful Mrs. Khurana. All the men and women will be burn with envy!"

She blushed with joy. "I'm glad you think so!" she said softly.

"I've got something for you." she noticed he kept his hand behind his back as if hiding something.

"What is it?"

"Close your eyes first." She did as she was told. Maan turned her to face the mirror.

"What are you doing Maan?"

"Chup! You may open your eyes only when I say so. No cheating!"

"I never cheat." Geet said indignantly.

"Oh! Did you think I wouldn't know about the milk that goes down the drain if I am not around to see you drink it?" He took the necklace from the box and placed it around her neck. She felt the slight weight of the necklace encircling her neck. With her eyes closed the sense of touch was enhanced. She felt the whispery touch of his fingers on her as he lifted her hair to put the hook of the necklace in place. His breath was so warm against her neck as he leaned in to fasten the hook. She could feel the warm impression of his lips as he tightened the hook with his teeth, his stubble ticking her. She shuddered involuntarily, drawing his eyes to their reflection in the mirror. He could feel the tension in her body, her lips were parted and her breath accelerated. He smiled tenderly at her reaction but the wish to see her eyes made him whisper near her ear, "Open your eyes, Geet."

The beauty of her passion-hazed eyes brightened the fire in his. His face was so close to her ear that she could feel the movement of his lips on it as he asked, "do you like it?"

She cudn't understand what she was supposed to like with her senses reeling with his nearness. There was something, something different about the proximity they shared.

"What?' she croaked unable to take her eyes off the intensity in his. He moved his hand across her shoulder and over the neclace in a caress. An ache, an unknown need pulsed thru her as she felt his fingers skimming across her.

"The necklace, Geet.." his voice turned husky as he felt the tremor that ran down her body. Her confused eyes dipped from his to look at the necklace. 'Red and white' stones (rubies and diamond) circled her neck, sparkling in the light. She raised her hand to touch it, fighting to bring down her accelerated heartbeat and trying to solve the puzzle about the difference she felt in his touch.
