Part # 31

Adil was standing at the edge of the same cliff point where he normally used to go, no matter if he was happy or sad or confused. This was a place of calmness for him. As he stares ahead, he can still see the vast sky and the never ending emptiness. The moon still looked lonely in that dark surface of the sky. This was the best thing abt this place, nothing really changed here. It cud always provide him with the equanimity he wished to embrace.

However, the place was not completely quiet like it usually was. Adil cud very well hear Ashna vigorously turning the pages of the file he'd just given to her. He half-turned to have a look at her, she was half inside the car to get sum light as she was still indulged in those trivial papers trying to defy whatever he had just said to her.

Adil turned his back again and let her continue with her work. He instead recalled the past few days.

Adil had hardly slept that night. He was too troubled within himself. He realized that the only and perhaps the best way was to speak with Ashna. He hadn't wanted to to wait till tonight, but the last few days were way too eventful.

In the morning Rashi had almost barged in the room. She was there to remind him of the New Year's celebration that night. And yes, he had forgotten it was the 31^st. May be for the first time, he actually forgot such an important thing. Not only that, he also had forgot to call Mr. Singhania and personally invite him for the party which was more of an official meeting for the two families. He so was losing himself.

Nonetheless, he immediately called Mr. Singhania and though it was extremely odd on his part, the man was warm enough not to take any offence or whatsoever!! He seemed to be a nice person just like he'd heard of him.

Adil: Mr. Singhania I had a favour to ask!

Mr. Singhania: Favour? Now wat favour cud you be asking?

Adil: Cud u meet me before the celebration? Lets say in an hour or two? I'd really appreciate that.

Mr. Singhania: Yeah sure. I'm not occupied. But is everything okay? I mean shud I be worried?

Adil: No, not you!! Main aapko time & place mssg karta hu, thank you!!

Back at present, Adil thought how drastical the past few days or rather the entire last month has been for him!!! He's had to come face to face with so many truths that usually lied within. He must have known them all for a long time but to voice each one of them was still hard. Only he knew how difficult it was for him to have the conversation with Mr. Singhania. But it was something he had to do, after all he still recalled his Dadi's words clearly!!

Adil: Thanks for coming, Mr. Singhania.

Mr. Singhania: Its alright. In fact, I am glad to have met you finally. Aapke bare me kaafi suna hai, not only in the business circle but also Rashi talks a lot abt you!! Shaleen bataya karta tha mujhe ki uske liye u mean the most aur jab maine usse baat kii I cudnt agree more. She hardly speaks two lines without mentioning you!!

Adil: Well, Dadi aur Mom zara unwell rehti hai, so wo hamesha mere karib rahi hai. So yes, attachment hai. Aur mere liye bhi wo bas ek behen nahi hai, almost beti jaisi hai. Actually I have tried to be all for her. Her father, her brother, her friend, everything!! Shayad isliye kyunki mera usse khoon ka rishta nahi hai aur isiliye har rishte se usse khudse jodna chahta tha. So yes, Mr. Singhania!! Main aaj aapse yehi kehna chahta tha ki...

Mr. Singhania: Ki tumhara Raichands se khoon ka rishta nahi hai?

Adil: Yes, I'm adopted and I don't know anything of my lineage or so. And I thought you shud know because this piece of information matters for some people. Specially because u'll have to be dealing with me at every step of this wedding. Aur phir, aapki family ki har jankari hai mere paas. So I thought u shud be having the same!!

Mr. Singhania: Jankari to mere paas bhi thi. Of course, I didn't miss this piece of information. But for the record, I thought it was absolutely useless. Rishtey khoon se thodi hote hai. You know that right?

Adil: Yeah, who better than me!

Mr. Singhania: So I guess hamein phir kabhi iss bare me baat karne ki zarurat nahi hai. Mujhe isse koi fark nahi padhta, if that's wat you wished to hear.

Adil: Indeed.

Mr. Singhania: Well, is this all you wanted to say?

Adil: Nahi, ek aur baat hai. (and Mr. Singhania waits for him to continue) If you really want this alliance, quit calling me "Mr. Raichand" & "Aap". It doesn't sound nice!!

Mr. Singhania was quite overwhelmed at his way of statement. He had heard a lot abt Adil Raichand's erect attitude and realized that none of it was an exaggeration. Unable to decide for a proper reply, Mr. Singhania bore a cordial smile on his lips while Adil prepared to leave.

Adil: See you later Mr. Singhania!! Have a Good day!! And thanks again for listening to me. This was important for me!

Mr. Singhania: I understand.

Adil was glad that he understood. Otherwise, he knew how hard it was for him to reason anything, anything at all. Just as difficult as it was now to talk to Ashna and make her understand his position.

Adil went up to Ashna and tried to have a talk with her.

Adil: Ashna, rehne do!! Isme jo bhi hai main already bata chuka hu tumhe!!

Ashna: Shut up Adil.

Adil: Ek hi cheez ko baar baar padhne se wo badal nahi jaata. Leave it. I was not lying!!

Ashna: Pata hai mujhe.Jhooth kyun bologe mujhse? Lekin tum ghalat ho sakte ho na? I mean crucialities samajhne me tumse ghalti ho sakti hai na?

Adil: U think main itne saalo se ghalatfehmi me hu?

Ashna: (looks up) Saalon se matlab?

Adil: (drops his eyes) Meri baatein khatam nahi hui thi Ashna. Shayad tumne dhyan se suna nahi maine shuruwat me kya kaha tha.

After the meeting with Mr. Singhania, time flew away pretty fast for Adil. Soon he arrived with Shaleen by his side. He was a good looking lad and Adil didn't miss the smile on his sister's face as soon as they stepped in.

The occasion was merely an excuse, there was no celebration as such going on. In fact, it was only Shekhar other than the family. But Rashi had decorated the entire hall and some other areas just to make it feel like a celebration. She would do it every year, even though most of the time she used to party elsewhere!!

However, the entire meeting went better than Adil had expected. He was actually a bit skeptical abt Dadi but she was strangely quiet though cordial. Another surprise was Mr. Singhania's acquaintance with Ashna's father!! Though Ashna didn't remember him or so, it was nice to realize that Mr. Sehgal used to know this man. For Adil, it was as if someone assured him of this approval and only he knew how much that meant for him!!

Ashna: Isnt that a nice co-incidence? Papa used to know him!! Though I don't remember him mentioning anything to me, but then I was hardly with him!! Jab bhi unke saath hoti thi, I used to talk abt me and myself. (there was a faint smile on her face)

Adil: Ashna, you okay?

Ashna: Kash, main aur unke saath reh pati. I wish he told me everything. Main aur waqt unke saath...!! Khair, its nice to see Rashi happy u knw? But Adil, she is quite young ryt? I mean, pehle bhi ye baat hui thi hamari, she can easily wait 2 or 3 more years for marriage!! Isnt this rushing up?

Adil: I guess not. I just hope everything goes accordingly. By the way, Shaleen is nice right?

Ashna: (smiles) Don't look so worried Adil. He is fine, really gud in fact. Aur tumhe khud pe itna doubt kabse hone laga? Of course, you won't decide something untoward for Rashi.

Adil: Kya tumhe iss baat pe yakeen hai ki main Rashi ke liye koi ghalat decision nahi lunga ya phir tumhe sach me lagta hai Shaleen is a perfect choice?

Ashna: I guess both!!

Adil: Which one more?

Ashna: C'mon Adil.

Adil: Just tell me Ashna. Kis baat pe zyada yakeen hai tumhe?

Ashna: Of course, Tum pe!!

Ashna: Adil, aur kya kehna hai tumhe? Why don't u just say it?

Adil: Tumhe bhi mere decisions pe bahut yakeen hai na Ashna?

Ashna: Don't you dare beat around the bush!!

Adil: (almost ignoring her words) Lekin mujhse bhi ghaltiya hoti hai. Pata nahi kisiko samajh me kyun nahi ata? Main bas ek insaan hu aur mere decisions ghalat ho sakte hai Aur hue bhi hai...

Adil wanted to retaliate that very moment when Ashna placed so much trust on him. It hurt like hell to realize how he hadn't lived up to that trust ever!! But the time felt wrong, again!! Rashi's alliance was just fixed, it was a happy moment and he didn't want to ruin it for her, especially when she just got upset thinking abt her father!! Moreover, she didn't deserve to live every delightful moment through a pinch of agony, just like he did. She definitely deserved better, much better!!

Rashi's engagement was slated in 3 days!! It was mostly becoz Mr. Singhania wud have to get back and perhaps he wud return for the wedding when the date is fixed, which was hoped to get fixed within few months. However, amidst all these arrangements, Adil found an excuse to delay himself. He decided to wait until the engagement but when it was done fairly, he wud simply want to prevail the cheerful aura it had brought along with itself. Perhaps he was running away from the moment of truth. Everytime he wud assure himself that it was because he didn't want to make her upset, but deep within he knew that it was also because he was scared to face the truth himself.

However he gave up today!! He had to!! He was finally given all he'd asked for. Now it was wrong to hold back. And he realized it the moment he heard his mother's voice. She had finally spoken up, it took her a lot of effort to say his name, but she managed sumhow. The moment was ecstatic for Adil and he wished he cud express it, but he couldn't. All he cud do was to stare back in awe as he realized he cud finally let go!!

Adil soon noticed his brother hugging his mom out of happiness. He thought perhaps he shud have done the same at least to show his joy and appreciation. But he cudnt move from his place. He just stared on!!

Rishabh: (to his mom) Mom, you just spoke up!! I mean like...I heard you!! Are u okay? Do you feel alright? Any strains or anything? (GR just said non-verbally that she was fine) Gosh, let me get everyone here!! This is truly unbelievable!! It feels like after everything, things are finally falling in place!! (and he left)

Adil looked up at Rishabh as he said those words. It all made sense!! Things were certainly falling in place, almost as he'd wished them to be.

Adil: Its gud to hear from you Mom!! (she smilingly went up to him and hugged him while he hardly mumbled his next words) Am sorry!!

So at night Adil took Ashna to that cliff point as she puts the place as where it all started.

Ashna: Bahar ana zaruri tha kya? Wo bhi yaha? Aisi bhi kya baat hai jo ghar pe nahi ho sakta tha?

Adil: Tumhi ne kaha tha na, sab kuch yehi se shuru hua tha!! Wo din yaad hai na tumhe jab tum yaha mujhse milne ayi thi? I was waiting for you and...

Ashna: Main 20 minute late ayi thi. That was intentional. Tumne kaha tha late mat karna!! Tumhari awaz me wo authority sunn kar mujhe gussa aa gaya tha aur main jaan bujh kar late ayi.

Adil: Uss din maine tumhe ek file dikhayi thi, yaad hai?

Ashna: Whats the point Adil? Tum uss din ki baat kyun kar rahe ho?

Adil: Uss din mere paas do files the aur main actually tumhe ye wali file dikhana chahta tha!! (he hands her the gray file he was holding)

Ashna: Isme kya hai?

Adil: You shud read it.

Ashna: Adil, tumhe pata hai na mujhe aise mushkil kaam achhe nahi lagte. Tell me isme kya likha hai. Ek minute'.Divorce papers to nahi hai na? Coz trust me'that's not even the last thing I am giving you!! Not in any life alright?

Adil: There are sum medical reports Ashna!! Of Mine!!

Ashna: Medical reports? (and she quickly tries to go thru the papers while continuing to speak) Tumhe kya hua hai? I thought you were healing fine.

Adil: I don't heal fine Ashna!! It takes longer in my case!!

Ashna: This says abt sum...Chronic..ermm...

Adil: Leukemia!! Chronic Leukemia.

Ashna: And what does this mean?

Adil: It's a bone marrow disorder!! (he didn't want to use the word 'cancer')

Ashna: Okay!! But it can be gotten into order right?

Adil: Technically yes!! But...Ashna my point is...I don't have much time!! I don't even know how long do I have!! But the restlessness, the dizziness, the high temperature...it's all been too frequent for the past 2-3 months!! So I might lose it soon.

Ashna: Lose it? Do u mean...? Ah...no!! Tum mazak kar rahe ho, hai na? Tumhi ne kaha ye jo bhi disorder hai wo thik ho sakta hai. To phir aisi baatein kyun kar rahe ho? (Adil just looked away while she continued) Just one second, mujhe ye padhne do alright?

Adil: Ashna, main tumhe...

Ashna: Please Adil. Just let me...let me read this ok?

She made sum more space in the car to read the file while Adil got out of the car. He knew the night was gonna be long and perhaps the few moments, till Ashna finished reading the file, was all he had.

Adil: Tumhe bhi mere decisions pe bahut yakeen hai na Ashna?

Ashna: Don't you dare beat around the bush!!

Ashna: I'm still waiting Adil.

Adil: I think hamari shaadi meri sabse badi ghalti thi.

Adil was having a hard time while voicing these words, in fact the words were hardly audible. But even the whisper was a hard blow for Ashna. She never felt so useless before!! Tears were streaming out of her eyes even before she cud knw it. The world felt to be crushing down on her and she so wished that to actually happen. And no matter how impossible it felt, she just wanted to go back a few seconds, like she never heard any of those words!!

Ashna: You didn't say that!!

Adil: I did.

Ashna: You don't mean that.

Adil: I do Ashna!!

Ashna: Lekin tum aisa kyun? Why wud you say that? Does that mean, I was wrong all along? You actually feel nothing for me?

Adil: Whats wrong with you Ashna? Main yaha tumhe kuch aur batane ki koshish kar raha hu!! Why cant you connect all these things?

Ashna: What things? Ek taraf keh rahe ho tumhe koi disorder hai aur dusri taraf tumhe ye shaadi ghalti lagti hai. What can I make out of all these?

Adil: Ashna hamari shaadi ghalat isliye hai kyunki...it was a cheating!! I was lying Ashna!! Tumne sahi socha tha ki maine hamari pehli mulaqat me jo bhi kaha wo sabhi almost jhooth tha!! Siwai iske ki I really wanted you to say Yes!!

Ashna: And why did u want that?

Adil: Kyunki tumhare Papa ki jo halath thi uss waqt, wo mujhse behtar koi samajh nahi sakta tha!! He was dying...like me!! Farq bas itna tha ki mere paas waqt zyada tha. Doctor ne unhe bas ek mahina diya tha and trust me, that's too less!! Unhone socha mujhe sab kuch saup dena kaafi rahega, lekin unhone uss din se pehle mujhse kabhi iss bare me zikr nahi kiya tha!! Agar mujhe pehle pata hota to shayad...!!

Ashna: Papa ko tumhare bare me pata nahi tha?

Adil: Main bata hi nahi paya!! Pehle kabhi batane ki zarurat nahi hui aur jab batana zaruri tha, meri himmat nahi hui. Unki aankhon me dekh kar main nahi keh paya ki...!! Honestly, it sounds so lame right now!! Lekin yakeen maano, uss waqt ye bahut mushkil tha. Lekin shayad wo waqt hi ghalat tha, uss waqt maine jo jo decisions liye, wo aaj itne khokle lagte hai ki...!! Uss waqt ye shaadi karna sahi laga tha aur main actually tumhe sab sach sach batana chahta tha!!

Ashna: To tum uss din ye sab kehna chahte the? Ye file dena chahte the? To phir diya kyun nahi? Kuch kaha kyun nahi?

Adil: I wasn't sure tum kaise react karti. I didn't know you then, nor did you know me!! Ye baat bahut personal thi, in fact hai, as kisiko iske bare me pata nahi hai. I didn't know ek stranger se main kaise itna kuch keh deta!! Mujhe nahi pata tha tum samjhogi bhi ya nahi. And I didn't want to take No for an answer!! Lekin inn sab doubts ke bawjud maine tumhe call kiya aur milne ko bulaya. Par jab tum ayi tab tumhare andar mere liye ek ajeeb si nafrat thi. Tum mujhe janti tak nahi thi aur mujhse nafrat karti thi Ashna!! Tumhari nazron me main shayad duniya ka sabse ghalat aur ghatiya insaan tha. Aise me tumhe kya batata? Kaise batata? Aur phir pata nahi mujhe kya sujha aur maine ye file chodke wo dusri file hath me le liya jo tumhare Papa ne mujhe ussi din diye the!! Usme Power of Attorney ke papers the and I still don't know why he signed them for me!!

Adil: Yes. Maine socha tha kuch waqt ke liye ye sahi rahega kyunki uske baad tum waise bhi azaad ho jaogi.

Ashna: So you were counting on ur death and you still got married to me? In fact, that's why you got married to me!! Darn you Adil. What were you thinking? Tumhe kyun lagta hai insaan shaadi ke faisle ko lekar itna jazbaati itna careful hota hai? Tumhe kyun lagta hai main razi nahi ho rahi thi? Kyun lagta hai Papa sirf tumhi se meri shaadi karana chahte the? Because its Marriage, God Damn it. Tumne itna lightly kaise le liya?

Adil: I know, It was a big gamble and it was wrong. I shudnt have done this!!

Ashna: Gamble!! Shaadi karna tumhare liye ek gamble tha!! Great!! Aur main yaha soch rahi thi ki tum rishto ki kadar karte ho!! How cud you do this Adil? Tumne socha bhi kaise ki tum nahi rahoge to main azaad ho jaungi? Isse azaad hona kehte hai kya? Aur phir ye ek khaas rishta hai. How can you just play with it?

Adil: I can just say sorry Ashna coz I cant change anything!!

Ashna: Of course you cant. You knw wat? Tumne tab jhooth bola ye baat main maaf bhi kar du ye soch ke ki tum pressure me the or sumthing like that. Lekin tum mujhe baad me kabhi bata sakte the right? But you kept pretending!! Why?

Adil: Batane ki zarurat nahi thi. Everything was going fine!!

Ashna: Then wat suddenly went wrong now? Abhi kyun bata rahe ho?

Adil: Main bas itna clear karna chahta tha ki hamare bich kabhi kuch nahi ho sakta, there is no possibility as such!!

Ashna: (she looked on as realization dawned upon her) Oh, so this is wat went wrong!! I fell in love with you and that made things bizarre for you coz that's not what you had planned right? So I guess tum sab kuch sahi karna chahte ho!! According to your "plan", I shud be hating you. Kya yehi chahte ho tum mujhse? Kya isiliye laye ho yaha?

Adil: Its your decision Ashna!! Main tumse kuch nahi chahta. Bas tumhe itna batana chahta hu ki meri ore se koi force nahi hai. Tumhare property ke papers ready hai ye tum already janti ho, ab ye bhi jaan lo ki they are already signed. Court me submit karne ki der hai bas!!

Ashna: You knw I wont do that!! Insaan ko achhese naap-tol lete ho tum, Adil. You are indeed a very good businessman!! Tumhe tab bhi pata tha main kya karungi kya nahi aur tumhe aaj bhi pata hai. Tum jante ho main tumhe chhodke nahi jaungi. You know I Love you!! Maine khud kaha tha!! Trust me, I wish I cud hate you but...!! (she paused for a while hoping he wud say sumthing, but he didn't and so she continued) To bas itna hi kehna tha? Mere liye koi aur jaankaari nahi hai?

Adil: Nahi, that's all.

Ashna: Just look at you Adil. You're not even crying!! But then tum kyun rone lage? Tumhe pata tha ek bahut bada outburst hoga and all. So you were prepared right? Adil Raichand is always prepared, hai na?

Adil: Listen Ashna, I knw it's big!! You feel cheated and frustrated. Abhi bahut takleef ho rahi hogi tumhe, but at least you know we are not possible!! And that was the main idea!!

Ashna: But that's doesn't change anything!! I cant stop loving you. For love has no switch off buttons you knw?

Adil: You'll get over this attraction!!

Ashna: Attraction?

Adil: Yes, that's what it is. And I just want it to stop.

Ashna: You knw wat Adil. I just need some time alone!!

Adil: Main tumhe tumhare ghar pe drop kar deta hu. Is that okay?

Ashna hardly managed to nod her head and sat back in the car. Adil drove fast enough to cover the 20 minutes' distance in 5 minutes!! She was sobbing all along but tried to maintain her composure in front of him. She didn't want to break down before the man who thought of her love as a mere attraction!!

So as Adil drove away, Ashna locked herself in the empty mansion and surrendered herself to the tears!! She cud finally cry to her heart's content as he wasn't there to mock her!! Ashna suddenly felt a rush of anger within her. She wondered how cud he even say such a thing!! That her love was an infatuation? Did he actually take her to be so nave? Cudnt she know it herself wat she felt and wat she did not? And how cud he be so heartless? He crashed down her entire world and didn't even feel a tug!! Was he that emotionless?
