CHAPTER-12
The golden rays of sunlight touched every inch of Delhi. Yet, the warmth residing in the hearts of Maan and Geet had nothing to do with the sun. It was 7am in the morning, and all they could think of was about each other. The thoughts crowding in the mind of Geet Handa in the shower, and Maan Singh Khurana sitting down in the conference room of his office, were almost the same. They were both busy pondering over the one most confusing emotion in the world, without being aware of it themselves. LOVE..
*****
" Where the hell is Geet?" Maan muttered to himself, and grabbed his phone again.
The meeting with the clients was due any minute, and Geet hadn't been able to make an appearance yet. Yes, he knew, that she had got home just 3 hours earlier, after having been up for almost 36 hours. Yet, he wanted her by his side, when he gave the presentation to the clients. WHY?
He had no answer to that. Just one hour earlier, he had just dropped off to his place, grabbed a change of clothes, and made his way back to the office, getting the last minute details perfect. He almost wanted to pick Geet up on his way back, but was unsure, whether he had the right to do that. After all, he had never been to her place before, and to make an entrance there, without a proper invitation would probably not be commendable. Therefore, after shrugging off his extremely compelling thoughts, he had driven towards the office.
Yet, as he stood in the conference room, waiting for the clients to make an appearance, a part of him wanted Geet by his side. He wanted Geet to stay with him, while he talked to the clients. He wanted to tell the clients, that it was Geet and her brilliant mind which came up with such a flawless design for the orphanage. He couldn't take the all the credit himself. He just couldn't.
Without a second thought, he grabbed his phone again, and pressed the call button.
She had just stepped out of the significant shower, when her cell phone rang. Hurriedly, she made her way towards it, and the name on the screen made her heart flutter a little bit. She lowered her lashes as a reflex, as she picked up the phone, and spoke an extremely soft, "Hello" in it.
" Geet, kahaan ho tum? The clients are due any minute, and you're still not in the office." His voice washed over her, giving rise to that unknown sensation yet again.
She was stunned. What clients was he talking about? As far as she knew, they had no meetings lined up for the project today. And then, as she pondered silently, it suddenly hit her. The project they had worked on last night. His mother's dream project. She cleared her throat slightly, the shyness and awkwardness, still evident as she spoke," Woh.. main' main.. mujhe office aate aate 2 ghante lag jayenge. Aap meeting kar lijiye."
" No way, Geet. You are responsible for making this project happen. Main tumhare bagair meeting nahin kar sakta. You have to come over, and I'm gonna tell the clients, that the whole design was made by you." He continued, his voice quivering just a little bit in the end.
Her eyebrows rose, and her eyes widened. What was he saying? He was gonna give her the whole credit? She was gonna take away the whole credit for his mother's dream? No, no way. No way, Geet Handa. This one is his, and its from you to him.
She smiled slightly, and then, sobering up made her decision. She spoke strongly when she said," Mk, listen to me. This project is yours. All I did was help you just a little bit."
Ignoring his protesting sounds, she continued, " Forget that last night happened. Forget that I was with you last night. Just remember, that it was very important for your mother to have this orphanage built perfectly, and so, you, her son will be the one to fulfill her dreams. Not me. You wont tell the clients anything about my involvement. You will say that you have done it all by yourself, and no one else was involved. Do you understand?"
Maan closed his eyes tight, and leaned against the table. He whispered out painfully, " Are you crazy, Geet Handa?"
She laughed in a low voice, a brief musical laugh, and then said, " Maybe, just a little bit. I will see you in the office, Mk. In two hours. All the Best. Bye."
She hung up, and sighed contently.
He slowly removed the phone from his ear, and stared at it for a long time. She had a kind of power, a kind of authority in her voice, which stopped him from getting into an argument with her. Maybe, because deep down he knew, he could never win. And also because, he heard a different ring to her voice, something he had never heard before. It was an almost shy, timid touch, and he found himself smirking as he thought of how a SHY GEET HANDA would look like. He shook his head slightly, and straightened himself for the meeting.
He had two people pinning their hopes onto him. And he would not let any of them down. Neither his mother, nor Geet Handa.
*****
" I'm starving." She mumbled out, her mouth full of food. Geet sat in her cabin with a flustered Meera in front of her, who couldn't make sense of anything she heard or saw.
" Lemme get this straight. Why are you starving? And, why are there dark circles under your eyes?" Meera said, tilting her head on one side, and scrutinizing her friend very carefully.
" Because I didn't eat anything since last night, and I didn't sleep last night. Simple." Geet said nonchalantly." And listen, can we talk about this when I've got some food and sugar in me, Meera?"
" Sure. But this discussion is not over, Ms. Handa. You owe me an explanation." Meera said firmly.
Geet stopped chewing for a minute, as a warm feeling of dj-vu sinked in. Where had she heard these words earlier? Why did these words sound so familiar?
Her brows were still crinkled when Pinky entered and room, and handed her a file of documents.
" Maam, we need Maan Sir and your signature on these papers." She said.
Mk. He had said the same thing to her earlier that morning, no, or was it last night? He had wanted to know why she was at his office at that late hour. Well, she herself had no answer to that.
" Pinky, does it look like I am a duet of Mk and Geet?" she said, looking at her secretary defiantly, who immediately lowered her gaze, and muttered, " No, of course not, Maam. We just need to send these over today. It's almost been a month already since this contract started and we just have 5 months in hand."
" I know that, and I haven't refused to sign, did I" Geet said, as she leaned forward, grabbing a pen, when Pinky coughed.
"What?" Geet said, looking at the paper beneath her hand, and signing it carefully.
" Actually, Maam, its already lunch time and none of us has been able to reach Maan sir. Adi says he is not in office yet."
" Woh toh hoga hi na? He went through so much work last night." Geet mumbled to herself, still reading the paper carefully.
" WHAT??" Meera cried out.
Geet stiffened in her chair, almost biting her fast tongue out. Why? Why did she have to blurt that out? No one. No one is supposed to know anything about last night. She had decided and even told Maan to keep it a secret.
" Uumm' nothing. I didn't say anything. Well, why don't you guys go back to work. I will call him up, and fix it. When do you need the document, Pinky?" she said, her face turning a very light shade of pink, which didn't go unnoticed by Meera, but she kept her mouth shut.
Geet has a lot of talking to do, she thought to herself. What is up with her and Maan these days?
" By the end of today, Maam. So that I can send it over by tonight." Pinky said, flipping her hair back.
" Fine, I will get the signatures by tonight." Geet said, nodding her head, and looking back at the paper.
As the girls got up to leave, Meera stopped just by the door, and noticed Geet fish out her cell phone. And then, something weird happened. Geet started fixing her hair, as she dialed the number. She ran her hand through her hair, smiling slightly, clearing her throat. Meera gaped open-mouthed, as she saw the overgrown teenage girl in front of her.
" What the hell?" She didn't realize that she had said that aloud, till the teenager shot a look towards her, and slammed the phone back on the table.
" I have got a call to make, Meera. Mind giving me some privacy?" the flustered voice of a once very controlled and calm Geet was extremely evident and all her features were simply screaming out that something was definitely wrong.
As Meera nodded slowly, and closed the door behind her, she smiled to herself, suddenly feeling a very warm feeling of satisfaction. Maybe, she thought, things were finally turning around for Geet. Maybe, something good is finally gonna happen to her.
*****
" Calm down. Take deep breaths. Why are your palms sweating. Watch it, Geet, you almost dropped you phone. It's an I phone, its expensive, you don't wanna break it.
" Hello?"
Oh My God! He's got such a muscular voice. You know he's a man just by his deep voice. Wow. Oh God, Geet, he is waiting for you to talk. Stop acting like a 16 year old.
" Uumm.. Mk.. Yeah, I mean, I'm sorry. I was saying," she took a deep breath to calm down her havoc filled senses, and continued as coolly as she could, hoping her voice didn't quiver, " You didn't come office today. Why not you come? I need your name some pages. What the deal happened? You got?" Oh My God! Geet!! Hang up, hang up this minute. Stop making a fool of yourself
On the other side of the phone, Maan had a hard time holding the phone in his hands. He couldn't stop his smirks, they were crowding crazily on his lips. He had to admit, it was a pleasure to see a usually sober person act all messed up. And he didn't know, how he knew or understood this, but he had a feeling that the extremely controlled Geet Handa had lost control over her parts of speech because of him. And then, he did something he wouldn't even have dreamed off just 15 days earlier. He decided to play along.
" Uuhh.. Geet! If you stop eating your verbs and prepositions, maybe, you will make complete sense to me. But, I think I got some parts of your very able speech!" he said with a snicker.
Geet bit down on her lips so hard, they started hurting her. She tried one last time, after promising herself, that if she did something wrong this time, she was gonna hang up, and never ever call him again!
" You did not come to office today. There's some important documents. I need your signature. How can I get it?" She sighed in relief, realizing that she had got her language knowledge back.
Maan bit his lips to stop a smile. He said as nonchalantly as he could manage, " Well, actually I'm not coming to office today. So, the papers have to wait till tomorrow."
" Are you sick? I mean, was last night too hectic for you? Did you eat?" Geet removed the phone from her ear, and stared at it for a long time, then stared all around her cabin. Is there a virus around my room? One which is getting into my head and making me lose it?
She cleared her throat awkwardly, placing the phone back on her ears. She gritted her teeth and spat out, " The papers have to be sent out today. They need you today. I mean, they need your signature today."
" Well, then send someone over to my place. I will sign them and send it back to you. Will that be okay?" he said, the smile still sticking stubbornly on his lips.
" Yes, no. The whole staff is busy today, and it will get late if I send these over to your office, and ask one of your people to take it to you and then give it back to me. We only have tonight to sign the papers." She took a deep breath, as the conversation was finally getting normal. But then, the final thing happened.
" Hmm'" Maan said, considering things carefully, " Sounds like the papers are really important. Well, Geet, are you busy?"
" Huh?" she said, as he caught her off-guard. The question meant a lot of things to her, all at once. She tried to push the more tempting thoughts at the back of her mind and said slowly," No, not really..actually'"
" Well, then grab the papers, and come over to my place. I will sign them and you can send them off by tonight. That's the only solution I can think of right now." He spoke clearly, his voice sounding extremely normal and impersonal.
Geet felt a glow, followed by a blush on her cheeks. The blood rushed on her pale skin, coloring them immensely. She reasoned with herself, before replying, " I don't know where you live."
" That's not a problem. I am texting you the address. Okay?" he said, breathing out. Maan hadn't realized that he had been holding his breath since he asked Geet that.
They both hung up, staring at their respective phones. Geet dropped it with a thud on the table, picked up the documents and walked out of her cabin. She was so immersed in thoughts, that she ran into Pinky just outside the office building.
" Oh! I am so sorry, Maam. Are you going somewhere?" she stuttered, catching hold of herself really quickly.
" Yeah, I uh.. I'm going to get the signatures you wanted. YES, you're the reason I have to go. You are the one who did this. I didn't want any of this, and I am not at all nervous about this, okay?" she stormed off, leaving a stunned and shocked Pinky behind her.
As she took in a deep breath, sitting inside her car, her phone beeped. She opened the text message from him, and read it, realizing that this is the first text message he has ever sent to her.
GEET HANDA! Stop it! You're completely losing it. What on earth is wrong with you, girl? You lost some years of your life or what? You're not 16, you're 26. Behave like an adult, not like a teenager, for God's sakes. Her strong and tough mind wouldn't shut up, as she put the car in ignition, and started driving in a haze. Towards Maan Singh Khurana's house. The place where he lived.
DELIVERED TO GEET HANDA
What the hell did you just do? You asked her to come over to your place, when you know you live alone, and she..of all people. Are you crazy? This is not how you work. You never invite your staff or okay, colleagues, he admitted grudgingly, over to your place. NEVER. And she's probably on her way now. What are you doing, Maan Singh Khurana?
PRECAP: He is so, Oh My God! Damn! HOT!!!
I know, the precap is the same. But it will be covered in the next chapter.
