CHAPTER-11

Shit. Now what? Kya bolun? Why am I here? Why did I come here? Geet, think of something quickly.

She pretended to shuffle the designs with great concentration, and spoke stiffly, " We can talk about that later, Mk. Can we finish this design now?"

Maan still stared at her with scrutinized eyes, and after a prolonged silence, heavy with awkwardness and curiosity, he finally spoke, " Later then. But this discussion is not over, Ms.Handa. You owe me an explanation."

Geet looked back at him, and said, " Fine".

A small smile tugged the corners of his lips, as he settled down on the couch, and decided to take a power nap of 5 minutes, and then, get up to finish the work with Geet again.

The next fifteen minutes were spent in silence, as Geet continued working on the designs, while Maan relaxed on the couch.

" Mk," she said, the pencil stuck between her teeth, " The eighth storey is a huge thing. Are you sure you want to change it?" She waited for a few seconds to hear a reply, but none came.

Geet took out the pencil, and turned around. What she saw, made her feel a tenderness deep in her heart, something, she hadn't felt for anyone in her life before. She saw Maan lying on the couch, his hands under his head, serving as a sort of pillow. His eyes were closed, and his incredibly long lashes casting a slight shadow over his cheeks, where his light stubble gave him the masculine look he had. But that's not what caused Geet to continue staring at him. She realized startlingly, that Maan looked extremely innocent and vulnerable when he slept. Almost like a baby. She found herself smiling slightly, at the sight of the powerful and arrogant Maan Singh Khurana finally succumbing to the extreme harshness of sleep and fatigue. Her heart went out for him, when she realized he was doing so much just to fulfill his mother's dream. He was a rich man, one who could make billions of orphanages in whatever part of the country he wanted. Yet, someone like him was trying to satisfy some mere clients so that he could get every detail of his mother's dream correct. She hardly knew anything about the woman, or her wishes, but, that night, Geet felt a strange sense of responsibility over completing the project and making Maan and his mother's wish come true. It was, undoubtedly, one of the inexperienced phases of her life. Never before had she wanted to do so much for someone. And that too, for Maan Singh Khurana..She laughed slightly, as she recalled the times she had met him in Mumbai. Her home town. The place where she was born and brought up.

She traced the lines accurately on the layout, as she thought of the first time she had met Maan. In the shopping mall, then in the lift, and then in the rain. She remembered each day vividly. They were some of the most special days of her life. Not because of Maan, but because of Dev. Her forehead crinkled slightly, as she chewed the end of the pencil, and dabbed it back on the design, drawing the rectangular blocks perfectly, a small smile touching her lips. They had fought so horribly every time they had met. She had even gave him a list of names- male chauvinist, snob, aakhru, saddu, sadist. Little did she know, that she would be working with him and for him so diligently, Geet thought, shaking her head a little.

She sat down on the chair, staring at the design carefully, before chiseling her pencil, and placing it on the paper again. As she worked, her mind drifted back to the dinner. The night which Maan had spoiled for her, when he could have used the time to complete the project properly. Geet reached out for the marker, highlighting the areas required, as it suddenly hit her in the gut. They had been fighting about calls, not talking to each other, and accusing each other about not caring. Just like any couple would do. Wait, did she just say, COUPLE!!

It was true. The conversation was nothing different from ones she had seen her lovesick college friends have with their petty boyfriends. And she had always made fun of that. It was absurd, how people expect someone to call, and talk for hours and hours. But that's what she had accused Maan of. Of not calling her, and asking her about her health, or telling her about the project. Geet lowered her marker, dropping it on the table with a slight thud. She held up the paper gingerly in her hands, staring intently, for any sign or trace of flaw. Her eyes darted furiously over the piece of paper, absorbing everything in her brilliant mind. She sighed almost contently, and leaned back in the chair, the design still held carefully in her hands. Her mind went back almost unwillingly on Maan.

She looked across the room, and saw him sleeping peacefully on the couch. She stared at him for an immeasurable time, her features softening almost on an accord of their own. Its different. Nothing is same. This is new. I've never felt this.

And then, she saw that there was a slight mistake in the fourth storey.

*****

He felt the slight dim light of something on his face, and his eyes shrank a little. He was unable to move, the stiffness was beyond words. He groped around for the duvet, but, his drowsy mind registered surprise, when his hands came up empty. That's funny. I had the duvet on me when I went to sleep.

He tried again, but the flick of light fell on his face again, stopping his efforts. He groaned and rolled over, attempting to get into a more comfortable position, when he realized that he was not in his usual king-size bed. His eyes snapped open, his sharp mind alerted by the sudden vulnerable state of his position. He sat up immediately, taking in his surroundings. But, his jaw dropped open, when he saw her. He rubbed his groggy eyes vigorously, convinced that he was somehow hallucinating. After all, she has been the only living thing on his mind for the past couple of days. Wait, why did he say living thing? What else is on his mind.

He saw her, working on a piece of paper intently, and suddenly, the whole of last night came back to him. His eyes fell on the clock on top of the table, and he jumped off the couch instantly.

" Geet, what the hell are you doing?" he cried out, making his way towards her.

" I'm almost done. Just 5 to 10 minutes more, Mk." she said, without looking up at him, still working attentively.

Maan ran a frustrated hand through his hair, as he realized that he had fallen asleep last night, in the name of a power nap. And Geet, Geet Handa had been up all night, and morning, working on HIS project. What the hell.

" Geet, you're still working on this? Its 5am in the morning for crying out loud." He groaned, a flick of guilt clouding his face.

" Really? Good Morning, Mk." She said, still staring at the design in front of her.

This is unbelievable.

" Geet," he held her arms, and spun her around. " Maybe," he looked into her eyes and spoke," you didn't hear me. I said, its 5am in the morning. Its dawn. Why the hell are you still working? Did you get any sleep last night?"

" Actually, I don't remember. But now that I'm finished with the design, take a look at it. Tell me if you find anything wrong with it, and I will fix it." She said, dropping the pencil on the table, and staring back at him with wide eyes.

Maan shook her head exasperatedly, and whispered, " You just cant be normal."

Geet stifled a yawn, and sank down on the couch, leaving Maan to study the design she had created for his project, by working almost 6 hours straight. Maan held the paper in his hand, staring at it, but all he saw was Geet's face. He looked tenderly at all the perfect lines drawn, and a softness covered his face, as he realized that she had worked only for him the whole night. She didn't need to, it had nothing to do with her, but still, she cared. He stood there trying to swallow the huge lump in his throat, as he stared at the impeccable work. Never before has someone does so much for you, Maan. Your team has worked for you, because they were paid for it, because it was their job. They had never done it because they cared for you. But, look at this girl! She worked so hard, just for you. Only for you.

" Thik haina, Mk?" Her words were drowned in the yawn, she tried to stifle again. She stretched her tired limbs on the couch, staring in his direction, waiting for his response.

" It's just.." His words were cut off, as the conference room door swung open strongly, and Adi walked in, humming a tune to himself, but staggered back almost immediately as he Maan.

Adi rubbed his hands over his eyes vigorously, thinking that he was hallucinating. Maan and Geet were in front of him, looking tired, sleep- deprived, and obviously stressed out. They looked like they both could use some rest, a hot shower, and some good hot food. He opened his mouth to talk, when a tired Geet spoke up.

" Good Morning, Adi." Turning to Maan, she continued, " I'm going home now. If you have any problem, just give me call. I will be in the office by 11am sharp. Tab tak, aap meeting kar lena, okay?" Nodding her head, at an open-faced Adi, she left, picking up her purse and car keys.

Maan stood there dumb-founded, having a thousand of things to talk about to Geet, but it was not until she had left the building that he realized that she was gone. He glared at Adi, who stuttered something inaudible, and dashed out of the room, leaving behind a fuming Maan.

What the hell, Maan! She worked so hard for you, and you didn't even tell her that the design is flawless! She left, you didn't stop her, offer her a ride, or coffee, or breakfast. What's wrong with you?

He cursed himself, and picked up his cell to call her immediately. At that instant, something hit him in the gut so hard, that he almost tumbled backwards. The sheer force of the reality was so strong that he felt himself losing control over his body. He sank down on the nearby chair and thought hard. Really hard. What was going on in his life for the past two days?

He had seen her throwing up in the office two days back. He had been so concerned about her health. He hated to admit it, but a part of him was hurt, when he saw Geet in physical pain. The next day, he was informed about the problems in the project. He knew he had less than 12 hours to fix it, but when Pinky told him at the last minute about the dinner Geet had in the Oberoi Hotel, he had rushed to be at her side, regardless of his very important work. Why? Why had he left so urgently? Why had been the dinner so important to attend? Was it because, Ranbir Handa would be there and he didn't want to leave Geet along at his mercy? That's stupid. He is her uncle. She can handle him herself. His mind retorted furiously. However, his thoughts continued their flow. Yes, she could handle him herself, yet, why did he feel the need to be beside her, and protect her if required? Or maybe, his working brain conjured up another reason, I was there because she had been sick, and' He stopped there, as he recalled the conversation, or rather, the fight they had had at the restaurant. He remembered her words exactly, " Why didn't you call the whole day?"

" You remember I was vomiting the whole day, so couldn't you have called and asked me whether I am still throwing up or not?

" Aap aise kyun behave kar rahe hain?"

" I'm sorry for wasting so much of your time,Mk."

Even in his mind, as he thought about that, the whole conversation looked and sounded like Geet was his girlfriend, or wife. Wait, this is insane.

He threw his head back, and continued thinking. He had been so enraged that Geet didn't call him, or talk to him the whole day. Why the hell did he care so much about one phone call? Why did it agitate him so much if he didn't hear from Geet, or talk to her one day? And then, just a few hours back, she had appeared out of nowhere, and been a part of the most important project of his life. No, not a part, she is the one who made it possible. The things they had shared with each other last night. The way Geet had held his face between her hands, the tender look in her eyes, clouded with strength and determination and trust, made him go weak. So weak that he gave in to her. Surrendering completely. Allowing her to lead him, make him do whatever she wanted. She had seen his weakness for the first time. She had seen him in a vulnerable state, a sight next to impossible for anyone else in the world to witness. But Geet had achieved it. Just like you have. You have been a part of her pain and sadness, unlike anyone else,Maan.

He smiled unknowingly, holding the design lovingly in his hands, and staring up at the ceiling. This is unknown, this whole feeling is unknown.

" Have I started liking Geet? Do I find her tolerable these days?" He said out loud, smirking slightly.

*****

" Have I started liking Mk?" The words shattered Geet's thoughts ruthlessly.

Half An Hour Earlier

Geet staggered out of the Khurana Constructions building, her feet hardly finding strength to cope up. As it was only half past five in the morning, no one had yet arrived in the office, except of course for Adi, who was, for some reason early today.

Geet heaved a sigh of relief. Without even looking at a mirror she knew, that she looked hideous. She always did, whenever she had stayed up the whole night. She quickly crawled into her car, started the engine, and drove out of the basement, and out of the office, as fast as she could, avoiding eye contact with anyone and everyone she saw. She couldn't afford to let anyone see Geet Handa in this disheveled state!

As she crashed her tired body into her apartment, she flung her purse, and keys in the nearby empty space she could find, and made her way towards the shower. Shrugging out of her top and leggings, she stood under the water, allowing its warmness to calm down her tired muscles. As the water cascaded down her body, soothing her senses, her eyes snapped open, as the whole scenes of the last two days played in front of her like a motion picture.

What the hell. What have you been doing for the last two days, Geet Handa? She closed her eyes again, as the memories engulfed her.

She had had a terrible fight with Maan at the hotel. The reason was a call. Just a plain, simple call. Why did she overreact? The cool and composed self of hers never did that. Why did she care about one single phone call from Maan? And then, she hated to admit, but she was thrilled to see him there. It made her feel warm in a soothing sort of a way to know, that he is around her, looking out for her. It was simply absurd. And of course, there was last night. The last couple of hours she had spent with him, working to fulfill his dream. No, it was his mother's dream, Geet Handa.

She didn't even think once, about the amount of effort she had to give in to the work, and how much tired she was. All she could think about was whether the project will be successful or not. It was so important for him, for Mk. It just had to work out. He was such a nice person, doing so much for his mother. She smiled slightly, her mind conjuring up images of Maan yet again. The way he walked, the way he talked, the way he looked at her. His eyes full of anger, and rage mostly, but last night, she had seen pain in those depthless pools. And she had wanted to take them away. Make sure, that he never was saddened again. Why?

"Have I started liking Mk?" The words shattered Geet's thoughts ruthlessly.
