CHAPTER-7

" Sab theek ho jayega, Geet!!"

As she lined her hazels with the black eyeliner perfectly, the words ran through her mind for the millionth time. They were ordinary words, but, the meaning and impact on her was enormous. She recalled the last day, when Maan had told this to her in the office. She looked down at her hands. He had given her a cream later that day, and said very caringly," Geet, use this. Meri daadima isse use karti hain, to soften her hands after bleaching. This should help you too."

She looked at the cream on her dressing table, and picked it up gingerly. As she uncorked it and applied it on her chapped hands, she couldn't help having a warm smile tug at the corner of her lips. She shook her head, and continued getting ready for the 7pm client party.

*****

He stood near the door of the hall, waiting for Geet. They were supposed to welcome the clients together, tonight. He checked his watch for the hundredth time, clucking impatiently, when Geet walked in.

Yes, he had seen girls all his life. Yes, he had seen beautiful girls all his life. But, the word beautiful was insufficient to describe Geet on this night. She was dressed in a simple black dinner gown, without any piece of jewellery on her. Her hair was open, cascading down her shoulders, and stopping halfway her spine. Her heart shaped face was lightly make-upped with her beautiful hazels lined with the lightest touch of black eye pencils. She looked elegant, charming, simple, graceful, stylish, fashionable- all at the same time. And Maan was stunned, plain stunned.

Geet felt her breath hitch, as she took in the glorious sight in front of her. Until now, she had always seen Maan in his office wear. He had style, that was inevitable, but she didn't realize until then, that he was a very handsome and good-looking man. She took in his entire appearance, which consisted of a black shirt, and black DKNY jeans. The top three buttons were left open, which flaunted the smooth muscles of his well-toned chest. His long neck, and shapely biceps were even strongly outlined by his attire, giving him a Greek God look which took away Geet's breath. She was astonished, plain astonished.

As the two pairs of eyes met, the strong sensation forced itself in. They felt swept away in an incredible magic, an unbelievable charm. Geet started walking forward, moving closer to Maan every minute, and stopped right in front of him. He stared at her, as she stood herself beside him, and tearing her gaze away from him, concentrated on the surroundings. He saw her eagle eyes analyzing every minute details of the party, making sure that everything was perfect for the clients. She nodded her head satisfactorily, and turned back to him, smiling softly.

It had been 10 minutes, that the couple in black stood near the door, waiting for the clients to arrive.

" I just hate these parties!" Maan muttered, as they stood near the front door.

" Me too." She said, and then both looked at each other in utter surprise. For the first time, they had found a similarity between them, something common between them.

" I thought you were a party person." He said slowly, without looking at her directly.

" I used to be, but then," she paused, her eyes clouding mysteriously again, but she recovered quickly and continued, " But then, things changed, and I.."

Just then, the clients entered, and they walked forward to receive them. However, what Geet saw made her freeze at the doorstep. She stared at the man in front of her amidst the group of corporate people. He was in his late 40s, with sharp eyes, crinkled forehead, and extremely distinguished features. She tried to edge backwards, to avoid being seen by him, when suddenly, his hawk sharp eyes fell on her, and narrowed on an accord of their own.

" Geet, tu wapas aagayi? You're back from Mumbai?"

Geet felt a thousand thorns prick her already raw wounds as she heard those words. She slowly looked up into those grey old eyes, and grasped hold of her cool and calm demeanor again. The staff were busy entertaining the clients, but she could feel Maan's eyes on her, and somehow, she knew, that Maan had heard every single word, that came out of the man's mouth.

" Yes, I'm back. Main Mumbai se wapas aa gayii Mamaji." She realized that she had been holding her breath.

He chuckled slightly, and suddenly held her arm. He brought her close to him, and whispered, very conspicuously, " Toh, did you look for him? Did you try to find him? Didi aur Jijaji ne kuch pucha nahin tujhse?"

Geet felt herself stiffen involuntarily, as her maternal uncle fired the extremely personal and painful questions at her without any single thought of mercy or compassion. She felt a twinge of anger, as she realized, that it was a gossip for him as well. Her life was ruined, and that was just another bit of spicy news for him. Her eyes filled with disgust, as she looked at him, and her very powerful instinct told her, that several calls would be placed to Mumbai that night. And the sole topic of those numerous calls would be the life and whereabouts of Geet Handa.

" Can I talk to you for a second, Geet?".The voice, broke her thoughts, and before she could comprehend his actions, Maan freed her arm from her uncle's grasp, and led her out of the party hall. They passed the various empty corridors, without speaking a word to each other, as Maan continued to hold her arm tightly. They soon reached the lawn, where the open cool and crisp air hit Geet, and suddenly, her mind was able to form coherent thoughts.

The last one month of her life sprang in front of her eyes yet again, as she recalled her uncle's questions. Maan stared at her, as she slowly dragged her feet towards his car, and settled herself gently on the passenger seat. Without saying a word. Maan sighed, as he fished out his keys, and settled on the driving seat beside her, and started the vehicle.

The engine roared to life, and the car sped into the darkness of the night. None of them spoke throughout the whole drive. Maan was sure, that Geet had no idea, where they were going, and he himself had no idea too. He didn't know why he was doing this, but, inside the party, he had noticed Geet's discomfort and pain at the elderly man's questions and interrogations very clearly. That was the reason, that he didn't give a second thought, as he dragged her out of an extremely important corporate party. And now, she was sitting, as if, she didn't care about anything, and just wanted to get away from the world.

He stopped the car, somewhere on the outskirts of the city. As he cut the engine, Geet got out on an accord of her own, and settled herself down on a rock beside the deserted road, her eyes fixed ahead of her, and still without a word. Maan couldn't help stare at her, trying to understand her mysterious actions. He got out too, and settled himself lightly down beside her.

It could have been hours, or minutes, or mere seconds. None of them realized the time, the time that they had been sitting together like that, on the deserted dark highway, with nothing or no one around them. The only sounds being, their normal breathing in sync. Maan ran a hand through his head, trying to start a conversation, when he was stopped by her.

" His name is Ranbir Handa. He is my maternal uncle. Mere mumma ke chote bhai. Mere aapne Mamaji. He was always ambitious, and shrewd. And he has done almost everything in life to earn the amount of money he has now. Unke liye koi saga nahin hain. All he ever cared about is money. He worked under influential people, acting like their servants, just to earn money. He sold all his self-respect and dignity, only to become rich. He even used his sister and mother's jewels to add to his enormous pile of wealth. Mere papa ne hamesha humein izzat se jeena sikhaya hain. He has always taught us, that we can lose everything in life except our self-respect. And Mamaji ne kabhi papa ki kadar nahin ki. According to him, my dad has these old-school values jo aajkal nahin chalta." She looked straight into his eyes, as he listened to her attentively, " But, at the end of the day, he is my relative, and I cant deny that. He knows things about my life, which almost all my family knows, and uses that to hurt me, and make fun of me. He finds satisfaction in that. Its his way of getting back at papa. All he is interested in is gossip, and right now, I'm the best source to provide that, Mk."

Geet got up, straightening her back, and looked ahead out to the empty road, crossing her arms over her chest.

" I'm sorry to have caused this trouble. I'm sorry that you had to leave such an important party today, because of me. I know that you already think I'm not capable enough. I know I give hundreds of reasons to you everyday for hating me. And I'm glad you hate me. I'm glad you dislike me. I'm not worth anything, Mk. I don't deserve love or trust or friendship or respect. Because I cant hold on to anything. Its good that you hate me, its good… its good…"

She trailed off, her voice finally cracking, as she stopped talking, and hugged herself even more tightly and protectively, as if trying to shield herself from the brutal cold wind, and the predatory world at the same time. She tried hard to stop the tears, but they betrayed her, and started trickling down her cheeks. Geet tried to contemplate, why she was crying. Nothing had happened, that would reduce her to tears. She had always known that her uncle was in the construction field too and that she might have to be involved in work with him someday or the other, and what had happened in the last month- well she knew that she would have to listen to people's taunts and teasing for the rest of her life. She had even prepared herself for it, when she decided to fly back to Delhi, immediately the next day after that night. And yet, she stood here, with tears filling her eyes, exposing her vulnerable form once more to Maan Singh Khurana.

" I want to, but I'm just not being able to hate you, Geet." He said quietly, standing right behind her.

She turned around slowly, only to look into his lost eyes, which stared back at her. He edged closer to her, as a feeble attempt of blocking out the cold wind, but Geet was surprised as she felt calming warmth spread all over and caress her senses. She was stunned herself, he wasn't even touching her, yet she felt so comforted, so cozy.

" Come on, lets get you home." He said, holding her hands into his, and luring her towards the car.

She resisted at once, still standing motionless, and looked at him, with tearful eyes," I told you so much, you just listened. Arent you gonna judge me on anything, Mk? Arent you gonna ask me any questions?"

He came closer to her slowly, and cupped her face. His voice was a mere whisper when it said," I don't want to know anything. I've worked with Ranbir Handa on a few earlier occasions and I know what he is. I just didn't know how he was related with you. And as for what you said about not deserving anything, Geet, you're the most worthy person I've ever seen."

The familiar warmth seeped through her again, as the words sunk in. Why? Why did his words always have such a huge and colossal effect on her? Why did his words matter so much? As she lay on bed, she thought about the whole night, reliving all the minute details.

She had broken a dozen of her own rules in just 3 hours. Why did she tell him so much? Geet frowned as she tried to think of a reason as to why she spoke her heart out to a man she disliked so much? Someone, she didn't want to expose herself to. She had just told Maan things which even her parents didn't know. She had told Maan her opinion about her own uncle, and he had not questioned her once. He had just listened and agreed silently, not asking her to justify her behavior. She had opened out a part of her heart to him, and the thought of doing so to anyone would have dreaded her. Even Meera didn't know so many details. And yet, Maan knew. She twisted in bed, putting her hands behind the back of her head, as she delved into the night again. He had been such a great listener, he was so patient, he had been so.. Geet smiled slightly, as she thought of the word she was about to use for Maan Singh Khurana. Sweet.

Her cell phone beeped beside, her and she sighed, rolling over and picking it up.

" Geet"

She sat up, slowly, as she realized that she had failed to see the caller ID before picking up the phone. The call again. The one which she had received back in the conference room the other day. In front of her whole staff and Mk.

" Ji, Mumma." She said softly, " Kaise hain aap log?"

" Hum acche hain. Ranbir ka phone aaya tha."

" Ha.. main aaj unse mili thi."

" He said there was a guy with you. Maan Singh Khurana, the MD of Khurana Constructions? Are you guys in a.."

She stopped him midway, and said sharply, " Maa, jaisa aap soch rahe hain waisa kuch bhi nahin hain. I work with him. I have, I mean my company has signed a 6-month contract with him. Its strictly professional."

" Geet, even if its not, me and your father don't mind. Its high time that you settle down in life. Sab log tumhare baaremein pochte rehte hain, and especially after the…"

" Maa, kal subha office hain. I gotta go now. Bye. Take care. Give my love to dad." She cut the call, dropping the cell phone on the bed with a thud.

Kicking off the duvet, she got up, and walked towards the window. Suddenly, all the nice memories of the whole day didn't matter to her anymore. All she could think of now, were her failures as a daughter, a friend, a sibling and… Her mother had just called, and not once did she ask her about herself. All she wanted to know and talk about was that one topic which was the most hurtful to her. She had known all her life that her parents were extremely open-minded, then what went wrong now? Why were they so keen to marry her off, in spite of knowing everything? That was the reason, she usually preferred avoiding any calls from Mumbai, after the night she came back to Delhi. That was the reason, she just dismissed the calls with a text like, I'm fine. Hope you guys are good too… Take care. Ones which didn't need any answer back.

She switched her cell off, and lay on bed, willing her eyes to drop to sleep. But they were far from closing. A lot of things were going on in her mind. A lot of things.
