A Maaneet Tale
Feeling Jealous
After freshening up as quick as I could, I draped my veil over my head and made my way downstairs, immediately setting to work; cloth and bucket full of water in my hands. I bent down and started to wipe. Anjali was sitting on the couch, reading a magazine while Maan was sitting opposite her; reading a newspaper.
God, both of them were so alike.
Anjali cleared her throat and I turned to look at her. She discreetly winked at me and returned her gaze on the page of her magazine.
Anjali: "So, brother" she said and cleared her throat again. Maan's eyes which were fixed on the newspaper flicked to Anjali's face.
Anjali: "Have a girlfriend or somethin'?" she asked
Maan glared at her.
Anjali: "Sorry, it's just that you've been single for so many years" she said and glanced at me, signalling me to say something.
"REALLY?!" I exclaimed, feigning shock.
Maan's eyes went back to his newspaper.
"Are you gay? I mean it would be such a shame for such a good-looking man to --"
Anjali giggled.
Maan's eyes flicked up and shot me a glare. I immediately bent my head and went back to work.
After a few seconds, I looked up to see Maan's reaction; only to see that he was smirking behind his newspaper. I coughed.
Maan looked at me, his smirk instantly vanishing. He pretended to be focused on his newspaper.
Anjali: "Gauri" she called out
"Yes Ma'am" I replied
Anjali: "Leave that and come and change the covers of these cushions" she said
I abandoned my bucket of water and cloth, moving on to the cushions. I fetched for new covers before removing the old ones and replacing them.
I moved to the couch Anjali was sitting on and removed the cover from one of the cushions. Discreetly, I tapped Anjali's ankle with my foot. She looked at Maan and then looked around us quickly before looking up at me.
"Muskaan" I mouthed
Anjali nodded reassuringly and went back to her magazine. I frowned, wanting more details but knew this wasn't possible since Maan was close.
Maan's voice made us both jump.
***
Gauri thinking I was good-looking somehow made me feel happier.
Wait, didn't all girls think I was good-looking?
I removed my gaze from my newspaper and saw Anjali and Gauri were having a private eye conversation.
"Care to tell me what you both are gossiping about?" I asked and noticed both ladies jumped slightly. Anjali looked back at her magazine.
Anjali: "What? Do you have a problem with me making friends now too?" she asked
I shook my head in disbelief and moved my gaze back to the newspaper which I had read about five times already. I turned the page and realized Gauri was moving to the couch I was sitting on.
The girl was now standing next to me, changing the cover of the cushion which sat beside me. She had her veil draped so low over her head, I wondered how she could see where she was walking.
I paid attention to the girl for the first time since she came here. She had hair coming down to her hips which was tied securely in a braid. She had a good figure and I also noticed she had great legs.
God Maan, what are you thinking? She's just a servant working here.
I also noticed she was married.
***
I stiffened my posture as I was changing the cover of the cushion. I could feel Maan's eyes all over my body, especially my legs. He made my heart beat faster.
"Like what you see?" I asked
Maan's grip on his newspaper had tightened.
Maan: "What do you mean?"
"Your staring at my legs. They're quite nice legs aren't they?" I said and nudged his knee with mine. He was surprised at my flirting.
Maan: "Aren't you married?" his eyes had now fixed on my necklace
"Yes. Which is why you should focus your gaze on something else, even though I know how desperately you want me" I smirked and zipped up the new cover on the cushion.
Anjali started laughing but immediately shut up.
I looked at Maan through my veil and saw his cheeks had formed a slight hint of pink.
Maan: "And whats he like? This guy your married to?" he asked
"Boy, you should see his muscles. They're bigger than yours! Oh and his eyes are just the most beautiful shade of brown I have ever seen! The way he walks and talks is just..."
After a while, I realized I was talking to myself because his newspaper was on the coffee table; and he was gone.
***
"His muscles. They're bigger than yours!" I could recall her say as I lifted weights that were too heavy for me to hold. But I pushed myself and lifted them, anyway.
She was married?
My heart sank as I lifted the god damn weights. I could feel sweat trickling down my temple and neck already.
She was married.
***
I stared at Anjali, dumbfounded.
He had just... Left.
Anjali: "He's jealous, it's obvious" she said and threw her magazine on the coffee table.
"Yeah, right" I said and changed the cover of the last cushion.
Anjali: "Trust me. I saw the way he was lookin' at you. And he BLUSHED. He flippin' blushed!" she said, getting excited.
"Okay, whatever. Where would he be just now?"
Anjali: "The gym, probably. You know where it is?"
I nodded. I knew the ways of this palace like the back of my hand.
I made my way to the gym room and made sure my face was entirely covered before I walked in.
I watched him lift weights, his biceps bulging and moving in time. He was sweating.
God, he was just so sexy.
He put down his weights and then moved on to the heavier and bigger weights. He took a deep breath, clenched his jaw, and lifted; only to yelp and drop the weight. He held his left arm gingerly.
"What happened? Oh God, what are you doing? You probably pulled a muscle. Oh my goodness, these weights are so heavy. Nobody can lift that, not even you!" I scolded him and forced him to sit down.
***
The girl held my arm gingerly with her dainty hands. I could feel pain through my left arm as I sat down.
"I can't... Move it" I managed to say without yelping in pain again.
I looked up at the girl but couldn't see her face, but I knew her face was etched with worry. The only part of her face I could see was her lips which were in a big frown.
Her lips.
The most fullest and delicious looking lips I have ever seen.
I removed that thought from my head just as quick as it came.
Gauri: "I'm going to move your arm around gently, okay?" she warned me
I shook my head.
"It hurts" I said through clenched teeth
Gauri: "Serves you right" she said and held my arm in her hands, moving it around as gently as she could.
I closed my eyes tight and let the pain flow through my arm.
Precap: Maan remembers something.
