A Maaneet Tale
Threat's
16 August 2004
When I woke up the next morning, Maan had already left for work. Checking myself out in the mirror, I noticed a small box on my desk. I knew it was another gift from Maan. Smiling, I went over to my desk and picked up the velvet red box.
For a quick second, I thought Maan had bought me a ring but the box was too big and rectangular for a ring. I scolded myself for thinking such thoughts. Maan thought me as a good friend and buying me gifts was just his way of being nice.
But what about that scene in the room, yesterday?
Well, Maan seemed totally unaffected by the scene after Adi had entered the bedroom. When he came home from work, he also seemed unaffected and casual so maybe the intimate scene meant nothing to him.
But it meant a lot to me.
Sighing, I opened the box and saw there was a small note that said 'From Maan' and a smiley face in his elegant handwriting. I put the little note on my desk and saw he had bought me a pair of beautiful gold ankle bracelets. I shook the bracelets and listened to the lovely jingling sound of the bells.
They were just beautiful.
I bent down and clipped the ankle bracelets on both my feet. I jumped around, loving the rythmic melody of bells.
After I had stopped admiring the expensive gift, I got ready and quickly made the Queen and King breakfast. After that, I left for work and decided to walk today; mainly because I couldn't stop loving the sound of bells coming from my feet.
Khurana Constructions eventually appeared into view. It was a building that couldn't be missed since it was probably the biggest building in Delhi. It was also a place some people tried to sneak into, just to catch a glimpse of the Prince.
I showed the security gaurd my pass that Maan had given me yesterday so I could be granted inside the building. The security gaurd looked at my pass and stepped aside, letting me in.
As I made my way to Maan's cabin, Pinky waved at me; a piece of burger in her hand. Adi greeted me by smiling and nodding his head, while Sasha was nowhere to be seen.
I was happy that Sasha wasn't in office today because I really despised her. My three seconds of happiness was gone when I saw Sasha in Maan's cabin, wearing a skirt so high; she might as well go naked.
I knocked on the door and waited so Maan could let me in. After he said 'come in', I walked inside; trying my best to ignore Sasha's glare that literally went through my soul.
Maan's eyes travelled down slowly from top to bottom. He stared at my feet for a little longer before travelling his gaze back up again. He smiled, but it was gone so quickly I wondered if I imagined it.
Sasha: "MK, who is this low-class girl and why is she working here?" she said the word 'girl' as if I was filth.
Maan's eyes turned from me to Sasha, except this time they were full of anger and daggers. His jaw was clenched.
Maan: "This girl has a name which is Geet for your information. Sasha, tell me one thing. How is she low-class when she is wearing diamond earrings, designer Salwar Kameez, and a pair of gold ankle bracelets? Wearing tight clothes doesn't make you any different from low-class" he said, his lips curling into a smirk.
I tried to ignore her glare by pretending to be interested in an expensive vase that was set on the table.
Maan: "Well, I think you owe her an apology" he said
Sasha: "Apology? God MK, she is just a new employee. Stop sticking up for her as if your friends" she replied
Maan: "Every employee and person in this building deserves to be respected and treated how you would like to be treated"
Sasha muttered something under her breath that I couldn't quite make out, stood up and left, glaring at me as she passed by.
"She's right. I am low-class" I said in a small voice, sitting down on a chair across from Maan.
Maan: "That's just bull" he said, turning from professional mode to friends mode.
"If you didn't buy me this designer outfit, these diamond earrings, and the gold bracelet, I would be low-class wouldn't I?" I said, staring at a random file that was in front of me.
Maan: "Geet" he said my name but I didn't say anything, nor look back up at him.
Maan: "You are probably the most bravest, kindest, and the most purest at heart person I know. Who cares about this class crap? It's the personality that counts" he said, his eyes clearly on me so I had to look back at him. He was smiling. A genuine smile. A smile that he only showed in front of me because I was his friend.
"Thank you" I said, flattered by his choice of words for me. Nobody had ever called me all those things before.
Maan: "Anyway, your for today is to e-mail these clients. The message is at the bottom of this list. You need to e-mail the same message to every client. Is that clear? Good" he said and handed me a list when I nodded. I took the list, blushing when our fingers slightly brushed against each other. I took the list and made my way to my cabin, only to be stopped by a cold hand on my arm.
Sasha: "Stay away" she said
"Excuse me?"
Sasha: "Stay away from Maan. He's mine"
"Who are you to tell me to stay away from him?" I replied
Her grip on my arm had gotten tighter.
Sasha: "Just stay away from him. Or I swear the consequences will be so bad, you wish you hadn't come to this office"
"Are you threatening me?"
Her grip on my arm had gotten even tighter. So tight, her nails dug into my flesh.
Sasha: "Yes" she said, removed her grip from my arm, and walked away.
I was left with my arm red at the place she had held it, and my hands shaking. The way she just threatened me was scary and frightening.
I gulped, and decided that she was nobody to tell me who to stay away from. She was just another employee and if she threatens me again, I will tell Maan. Tell him everything.
Sighing, I entered my cabin and slumped down on my chair.

As I was e-mailing the clients, I felt a tingling sensation on my cheek. I stopped typing, and looked to my left at the window which seperated my and Maan's cabin.
Maan was staring at me but immediately looked away and pretended to be engrossed in his work. I smiled and propped my head on my hand, staring lovingly at Maan who was writing and typing at the same time. Eventually, he stopped and turned to look at me. I wiggled my eyebrows at him. I could see his cheeks turn slightly pink.
Maan played along, winking at me. I winked back at him. He stood up and walked over to the window, so his forehead was leaning against the window. I did the same. The only thing seperating us was the glass.
He breathed on the window, so the window steamed up. Then he wrote with his finger: "Hi"
I smiled. This was just so sweet.
I did the same, and wrote hi back.
He breathed on the window again and wrote down something really long. I watched him write.
"Get back to work" he wrote on the window
I stuck out my tongue and sat back on my seat. Maan smirked and got back to work.
I was about to get back to work when I saw someone standing on the doorstep.
It was Sasha.
***
It was 12:30. Thirty minutes till it was time for me to go home. I had just sat down in my cabin after a big lunch when my phone rang. I picked it up.
"Geet, coffee" he said
"Yes, sir" I said and hung up.
I got up from my seat and looked at the window to my left. He was engrossed in his work. I smiled and made my way to the pantry, only to be stopped by the same cold hand that had stopped me earlier.
Sasha: "I told you to stay away from him. Anyway, it was romantic how you both were writing on the window. I didn't know you both already knew each other"
"Yeah well, we're friends"
Sasha snorted.
Sasha: "Friends don't do that sort of thing. Geet, I told you the consequences would be bad"
"And what are you gonna do? Kill me?"
Sasha: "Something like that" she smirked and revealed a box of matches hidden in her hand. I stared at the matches.
Sasha: "I spilt kerosene in this pantry" she said
"Is this what you do to everyone who goes near Maan?" I asked
Sasha: "Your beautiful and it's obvious he likes you. But i'm going to change that" she said and scratched the tip of a match stick on the box. The match stick lit up.
I gulped, pressing myself onto the shelf which was filled with snacks and other kind of things. My hand accidentally hit something and that something crashed on the floor.
It was the coffee jar.
"M-Maan!" I called out and I knew he wasn't going to come. How could he possibly hear my voice from so far away? I sang my silent prayer in my head, praying to Baabaji for some miracle to happen.
Sasha: "Goodbye, Geet. Unfortunately, this was your destiny"
She dropped the match stick, and it hit the ground.
