A Maaneet Tale
Mistakes
14 August 2004
And so the days went by. Me and Maan understood each other more after that garden incident. We seem to have lots of things in common.
This morning as I sat down at the breakfast table to eat with the family, I held the jar of jam at the same time as Maan did. I looked up at Maan and cleared my throat, releasing my hand. I glanced at the Queen and King and they wiggled their eyebrows at each other as if they were having a private eye conversation.
Maan: "So, Geet. I need you to do me a favour" he said, breaking the awkward silence that had built in the room.
I turned to Maan, head rested on my chin; signalling him to go ahead.
Maan: "I fired my secretary" he said
I looked at Maan blankly.
"And..."
Maan: "And I have nobody to plan the launch party that is today. Everybody in my office is doing something"
"So you want me to plan the launch party?"
Maan: "Yes, if that's okay. It's short notice, I know" he sighed, rubbing the area around his temple.
"Sure, but there's a catch. You need to give me extra salary" I said, triumphantly popping a piece of bread in my mouth.
The Queen laughed beside me, Maan just rolled his eyes.
Maan: "Whatever. I'll teach you how to plan one and everything needs to be perfect, understand?" he said, suddenly not my friend anymore; acting professional.
I nodded and followed Maan with a notebook and pen in my hands, ready to write down any notes. We ended up in his bedroom.
I sat conciously at the edge of the bed, our intimate bed scene rushing back to my mind. The pen in my hand was covered in my sweat.
Looking up at Maan, I saw he wasn't affected at all and it was as if that event had never happened. I held my head high and pretended I wasn't affected either, making myself comfortable on the bed. Maan sat on the chair across from me.
Maan: "Right, so first your going to write down Flower Shop's number and then your going to pho --"
"Maan... A little slowly" I said
Maan looked at me and rolled his eyes.
Maan: "Write down the Flower Shop's number" he said and I wrote down the number.
Maan: "Your going to call that number and order Orchids. Is that clear?"
"Okay, but won't Roses look --"
Maan gave me a glare that was enough to murder somebody.
Maan: "I hate roses. Anyway... As for the food, there must be Italian food. Got it?"
***
I got it.
Despite my aching back, I worked as quickly as I could; ordering the flowers and the catering and everything else I had to order. I even phoned the Flower Shop and the catering people again to double check I had got the right order. Once I had done double checking, I jumped down on the sofa; hand on my back.
I was so tired and my body was just aching, I wanted to lie down and fall asleep.
About to get up and get back to work again, I reconsidered the idea. Maybe falling asleep for five minutes wasn't such a bad idea.
***
The doorbell ringing had woke me up and I realized I had slept for far too long. I jumped up on the sofa and looked around.
Thankfully, the servants had taken care of everything. Everything was ready except...
The flowers weren't Orchids. They were Roses.
And the buffet set out wasn't Italian. It was Indian.
I felt my heart sink to my toes and I knew this wasn't what I had ordered. I had triple checked that the orders were right and they were! I had definitely ordered Orchids and I had definitely ordered Italian, then how did this happen?
"Nakul! Come here!!" I shouted
Nakul bowed in front of me like I was a Princess instead of another servant. I tilted his chin upwards and pointed my finger at him.
"I ordered Orchids, not Roses!"
Nakul: "But this is what came through the delivery" he said, tears threatening to fall.
Suddenly, I felt sorry for him.
"Okay, okay. Open the door" I said and I knew the guests had arrived which meant I couldn't even do anything to rectify my mistake.
Before the door of the mansion opened, I ran upstairs to change my clothes. I didn't want the guests to see my ugly clothes. I was about to raid my wardrobe to find anything nice when my eye caught a shimmery bag set on my bed.
I ripped off the note that was stuck on the bag and read:
"Geet, I knew you needed something nice to wear for tonight; so I bought you a nice saree. I hope you like it.
Maan"
That was so sweet of him.
I took out the 'something nice to wear for tonight' outfit and stared at it. It was a beautiful, shimmering white saree. I didn't have to check the label to see it was designer.
I carried the saree gingerly in my hands to the washroom, excited to see how I looked in it at the end.
***
For once in my life, I decided to leave my hair down because frankly; it looked better with the saree. I made sure my saree was properly folded to my body before leaving my bedroom. I skipped down the stairs and looked at all the guests. Everything seemed fine, apart from one thing.
Maan was sending me daggers through his eyes, and I swear to God my heartbeat increased by 100 beats. I gulped.
I smiled at all the guests who turned to look at me. I walked up to Maan, taking a deep breath to explain myself.
"Look, I ordered --"
But before I could explain myself, Maan dragged me to the bathroom and shut me inside; locking the door. He pinned me against the wall so hard, my aching back ached even more.
"I can explain!"
Maan: "There is nothing left to explain" he hissed through his teeth. I had never seen Maan this angry.
Maan: "You did completely the opposite of my orders! I explained to you so clearly --"
"But --"
Maan: "You will NOT interrupt me when I am speaking!" he yelled, his voice echoing in the bathroom.
I felt trapped.
I punched my fists against his chests as hard as I could to make him take a few steps away from me, but all he did was blink his eye and handcuff my wrists together behind my back.
"Your hurting me" I said through clenched teeth, trying to ignore the bursts of pain that was shooting up my spine. It was like my back was on fire.
Maan: "I don't care. You deserve it! How can you make such a big mistake? I hate servants and maids who make mistakes like this" he said and looked away.
"Excuse me, but not everyone gets to be a Prince like you! What do you consider yourself? A God? You are invading my personal space and I want you to take a few steps backwards"
Maan didn't even move. Instead, he gripped my wrists tighter.
The tears that I tried to hold back now came rushing out of my eyes like a waterfall. I pushed him away from me with all my strength and the next thing I knew was my hand connecting to his face.
How dare he treat me like this?
His hand was on his cheek, and his gaze was the worst I had seen. I swear to God, I could see red in his eyes.
Maan: "Oh i'm gonna make you pay for this" he said, voice low and threatening. I stared at my hand at shock, I hadn't really meant to slap him.
I couldn't do anything but leave the suffocating bathroom. So I left, a fake smile plastered on my face. I acted as if nothing was wrong with me. I ignored the back pain and tried to walk straight.
I knew Maan was right behind me. I could feel his laser eyes through my neck.
"Geet, right?" somebody called out to me and I turned to see a friendly looking man in front of me. He held out his hand for me to shake.
I shook his warm hand.
"I heard you organised this party. I loved the roses and the twist of Indian food. I have never seen anything like it!" he said, a cup of tea in his hand. I smiled genuinely and turned to look at Maan who stared solidly right back at me.
In your face.
"Thank you, Sir" I said and I excused myself to my bedroom. I sat down on my bed, still not believing how Maan could treat me like this. I sat there silently, lost in my own thoughts when I felt something trickling down my back. I felt my back and my hand touched something wet. I looked back at my hand and saw it was blood.
My bandaging had opened and now blood had started to flow. I started to wonder how I would clean up this mess.
I knock on the door had startled me. I glanced at the door and saw it was Maan.
I looked away.
He sat down next to me, his shoulder touching my shoulder; his knee touching my knee.
Maan: "Look what I done to you" he said and got up to fetch for a first aid kit. He came back with one and sat back down again.
His hands had found my bare waist. He gently shifted my position slightly towards him, so my back was facing him. He trailed his hand up my back and started to clean my wound.
Maan: "I was mean wasn't I? You should have given me another slap. I deserved it, for being such a jerk" he said
"I'm sorry. I don't know how the orders got confused --"
Maan: "Don't be sorry. I... I'm sorry" he said, apologizing to me for what was it? The first or second time ever. I felt a small smile creep up on my face.
"Don't be. I let you down" I said, staring at my hands that rested on my lap. I tried hard not to wince as he bandaged me up again.
Maan: "Are you okay?" he asked
"Yes"
Maan: "Liar. Your not, I know how much this hurts" he said
I said nothing.
Maan: "By the way... You look damn beautiful in this saree" he complimented in a voice that made my heart skip a beat.
"Thank you" I said and smiled at him. He gave me one of his rare smiles.
Maan: "You should be lucky. Not many girls get compliments from me"
After that, he winked at me and left; leaving me alone in the bedroom.
Precap: Hot moments!

Just want to say something that nobody actually changed the orders. They accidentally sent the wrong items so it wasn't really Geet's fault at all!
