ALMOST LOVERS
Chapter 2
Two Different Love Stories
I watch you,
But you look away.
I want to love you,
But your love is to another.
Geet moved away from him with turbulent emotions brewing within her, yet she kept a calm facade on the outside.
In her mind she could recall their history and her first love. Everything had been so different then. Love had meant a different thing and he had meant her whole world.
Flashback
A little girl, barely 5 years old was walking in her garden with nothing to do. Her brother and sister were away at school, so she was all by herself.
As she wondered around she came down to the estate lake. This was her most favourite place! With a content sigh she sat down on one of the large stones on the bank of the lake and also took out her favourite picture book.
Geet was still learning to read, so at times she would make up some of the words. So engrossed she was while reading that she didn't even realize that there was someone standing next to her. She was only conscious of the person when they started to correct her words.
Looking up she saw that there was a boy, who seemed to be a couple of years older than her. He seem amused by her attempts at reading which immediately annoyed her.
"Why are you laughing at me?" Geet managed to blurt out while pouting.
"Cause you can't even read properly!" The boy taunted.
"I can!" She protested.
"Cannot!"
"CAN! YOU DONKEY, MONKEY, COW-" She screamed in anger.
"Are you planning to name all the animals in the world?" The boy sneered. "You are so dumb!"
This time Geet's tender heart couldn't take any more of the taunts and she started to sob at the insults. That was the last thing the boy was expecting. He immediately became contrite and attempted to console her.
"Hey don't be a cry baby." He said gruffly. "Calm down."
But Geet was inconsolable and her crying got even louder at his poor attempts.
"Okay I am sorry. Now stop crying!" He tried again while reaching inside his pocket to get out a handkerchief. "Here use this to wipe your tears and the snot from your face."
She took the hankie with another sob and blew into it with the strength of a hurricane. "Yo-You'are me-mean!" She choked out between sobs.
"Don't be such a cow about it! Stop crying like a baby!"
"Okay." Geet finally stopped, not wanting to appear as a baby to him.
"Good. What's your name?" He asked, trying to distract her in case she decided to cry again.
"Geet. Yours?"
"Rehan."
"Can we be friends?" Geet asked innocently, excited by the prospect of a playmate.
"Hmmm'okay. But we can't play girly games and we have to do the special handshake." He demanded.
"Special handshake?" A confused Geet asked.
"Spit and then shake." He demonstrated by spitting on his hand and extending it towards her.
Geet gave a shrug and proceeded to shake his hand.
"What does that mean?" An inquisitive Geet questioned.
"It means we will always be friends."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"It means we will always be friends."
Geet's heart clenched at the memory of their first meeting. It had been the foundation of a relationship that had changed and defined both of them.
But Geet was suddenly aware of eyes glancing at her intently and when she looked up she meet the eyes of her enigmatic husband.
As usual his face gave no emotion away, except the fact that he was gazing at her as if he could read all her thoughts and at times she was sure he could.
Maan Singh Khurana; her lawfully wedded husband.
Geet didn't care what others thought about her dance with Rehan. It didn't matter to her at all. But she did care about her husband's opinion. There was no doubt in her mind that he knew who Rehan was because Maan made it his aim to know everything and anything.
How will he react?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Maan watched his wife walk towards him, cool and collected it appeared. But he knew that wasn't the true case.
He could read in the way her fingers were clenched and the way lips were slightly pulled in that she was nervous and agitated.
And he had a pretty good idea why that was so. Of course it was because of the man.
The man. That was how Maan had always thought of him, as the other man. The man who his wife had loved and he knew that there was a chance that she still loved him. He had watched in silence as Geet had dances with him. His body had been burning anger and jealousy at how comfortable they were. It was not a feeling he was used to because Geet never danced with anyone apart from him. Until today.
Oh he knew that she would never cheat on him because she wasn't the type. She had too much integrity and too much faith in the holy vows they had taken. He trusted her in that way but when it came to feelings he knew he wasn't safe. And at the end of the day that was what mattered the most.
But that was the risk he had taken when he had stolen her away. He had known that she loved another man, yet he used whatever power he had to make her his. Maan Singh Khurana had never lost to anyone and that had been no exception. He had been ruthless and merciless in that mission, leaving her with no choice but to come to him.
Did he regret it? Did he regret stealing her away while she hadn't loved him? Did he regret destroying her love story?
He stared as she walked towards him and she stared right back at him. There was no hesitation or guilt in either of their faces. Just an understanding of the situation.
Because the truth was that there was red mark on her forehead that claimed to the world that they were joined together. And no one could deny that.
Soon she was standing next to him, ever so perfectly settle and impenetrable to the rest of the world. She started chatting with the people around them, never showing her nerves.
Did he regret it?
Never because the alternative was that she wouldn't have been his wife. She would have been another mans and that was unacceptable.
