Part 35:
Nupur knew she must be dreaming. She just knew.
Mayank was walking towards her with his ever so dazzling smile and stopped in front of her, still smiling. She wanted to compliment him by saying that he should definitely smile more often, rather much more often but even when it seemed like dream, she couldn't come up with saying that to him. Feeling effects of her supposed words more than it was supposed to mean.
Mayank went ahead and hugged her, whispering in her ears that she looked pretty. She felt some sharp undefined feeling rise in herself. She could swear it felt all so real. If it this wasn't supposed to be real then nothing real must be fascinating enough.
She felt extremely happy standing there with him. His protective strong arms around her, made her realize the strength that he was capable of injecting in her. She could almost admit that nothing was impossible for her if he were with her, by her.
Next she heard was her name from his mouth, very softly. She murmured, 'Hmm?'She didn't want to break the moment's silence but she also wanted to listen more from him.
He again called her out and she felt like may be she hadn't been loud enough in her response earlier. Making sure her 'Hmm' was audible this time, she expected him to continue now with what he had wanted to but she didn't get that response at all.
Instead she felt someone patting her cheeks.
Of course, the dream was broken. It was a dream after all. She just knew that it MUST be a dream.
But the feeling of his arm around her didn't go away at all as she realized that he was just as close enough to her as he was in her dream. Just that, he had been patting her cheek to make her wake up.
He looked just like he had always looked, amazing. Right now when she looked in his eyes, he looked deep in hers. She blinked, somehow fearing that he might look deep enough to see through her current dream too. Now this shocked her a little more than she might have expected.
She was so happy in the dream. This told her that she had started dreaming about Mayank in real. She never knew this had grown so in her. She had even started expecting some things from him which she knew were highly impossible for him to do. That scared her now, a lot.
She just didn't know at all that all that she had been feeling whenever with Mayank would take such a sharp turn. She was purely happy when she had actually married Mayank, though she never even admitted to herself. And later, when their relationship changed with time, she was glad the way it was progressing. She even looked forward to more moments between them, the way they had been turning out lately. Feelings that she felt, were cherished by her, rightfully.
But this! It was a little harder to take in. She felt some incomprehensible measure of feelings right now that were not too easy to assess.
Mayank was still holding her, looking at her with an expression which she wondered if she could regard them as loving.
The feeling that she had earlier, now she couldn't distinguish whether she felt it in the dream because he was actually holding her or was she feeling so right now too because she still had the effects of the dream?
She saw Mayank looking at her with a wondering expression right now when she decided that she had to stop thinking for a while and answer him now. Her head pained to do so.
Mayank had made a plan in his mind when he woke up early in the morning and saw Nupur sleeping close-by, as usual. It was still dark outside.
He saw her smiling very sweetly. It was as if she were very comfortably sleeping in his arms. It was strange that she was smiling then. He marvelled about when actually she did not give out expression for everything that she felt. She just had too expressive a face, the one that was constantly active.
He looked at her for a moment, he could almost kiss her then and he did. He went ahead and kissed her forehead, not at all feeling that it wasn't a worthwhile stolen thing.
He was suddenly struck with a plan. He lightly patted her cheek, calling her name out a several times.
She finally responded and when her eyes opened, it seemed defensive-less, like she had been caught at an off moment. She looked almost fixed in the spot, giving out a range-ful of expressions again to him - happiness, fear, puzzle, curiosity…all at once, once again.
He felt the need to understand her better, though he had thought that he had already started to.
When she didn't bother to answer at all and just looked up at him, he pressed his lips together forming them into an understanding smile.
Nupur looked at his smile and looked around too, finally to notice that it wasn't even dawn yet. Was something wrong? She sat up straight to ask him about it, in the process realizing that now it took his help too, for her to sit upright from her sleep. Why had she made it difficult for her ownself?
She asked out worried, "Mayank kya hua, abhi toh raat hai….?"
Mayank sat up knowing his answers well. He didn't even give an impression that would suggest that it was anything odd at all to be waking up at this hour of the time.
She wondered some more and even more when she heard him say, "Mujhe pata hai abhi sunrise bhi nahi hua hai…par isiliye toh maine tumhe utha diya…"
Nupur felt her cheeks go red and cursing her over-worked brain, she wished he wouldn't see that colour in the fainted light in the room; after all it was still dark.
She wondered aloud, "Matlab?"
Mayank put on the side lamp and said excitedly, "Chalo…tum ready ho jao….aaj hum sunrise dekhne ek achchi si jagah chalte hain"
Nupur was shocked for one, and shocked for another. Had he forgotten suddenly how he normally behaved, with her? He never made such plans with her, he never thought of doing out-of-the-box things like waking up in the night and planning something like that, and he never looked so excited talking to her while giving her the choice to accept his offer.
When Nupur seemed speechless, like the way she did, he laughed softy that made her skip a heartbeat before he declared, "Chalo…get up…tumhe bahut achcha lagega!"
Nupur couldn't believe she was going to actively take part in this until she saw herself give an astonished look to Mayank and got off the bed to freshen up.
Mayank smiled to himself, it wasn't that hard to approach her, he should do that more often.
All the while when she was getting ready, she couldn't help dodging the question coming up to her. Why when she had belived that this was an arranged marriage for her, did she start expecting love now suddenly? Her dream had threw that question to her face so abruptly that even when wanting to reject all such expectations, she knew she some where had started to expect that from long, no wonder she had so many complains to do to him. Her throat felt dry suddenly when she thought of it. When and where had she started asking for that?
And he was changing a lot too; did it mean that it was possible at all? She felt her heart take a moment to steady itself before she questioned her own question - did she want him to change so?
He would easily carry on with her, now she could easily see it in his actions and ways, so why was she feeling her heart wish that he do more than he usually did towards her? Share a meaningful smile with him, just like that. She could easily imagine a thousand things that she wanted to happen between them; a small talk of understanding, for the starters. She wished to see him closer than he usually was, feeling goosebumps at this very thought.
She came out and when he had gotten ready too, he surprised her when he led her to his bike and off they went. She had been a little too preoccupied with her thoughts and so she missed out on asking the place he was leading her to.
Mayank wondered about her mood. Was it her every morning feeling? No! He didn't think so, he had seen her better.
It was a long path they were leading to, she holding his shoulders from behind wondering 100s of times she would rather hold him back-hugging him, she was feeling much more vulnerable towards him than she ever had.
It was strange, the silence that they both shared mostly. It made them feel all the walls that their relationship had and once they talked, it was another story completely; it felt that it shouldn't ever end. Only that till now, they hadn't ever talked ever of each other's feelings for each other and that is what made the silence feel stronger voids between than it should have.
It was nearing the break of dawn when Mayank parked his bike to a corner of the road.
Nupur walked behind him and came yawning to stand beside him. The heavy air that had blew on their faces when on the speeding bike, had felt nice, almost putting the sleepy feeling aside, though she couldn't stop yawning still.
It was actually too nice a place. She had never been to this part of the city before. It was pin-drop quiet. There were trees lining up the complete street they were in, a path was laid that was supposed to be where, people would later be jogging and there was sea. Strangely enough, the place where they were standing was close enough to the sea and the water was deep right from the point where it started ahead of them. Right now it seemed grayish, like steel with little ripples dancing on it.
Mayank motioned her towards the sky when she looked at the deep water and felt a little scared to be so close to so deep a sea. Nupur wondered if he could sense what she felt, to make-shift her focus.
She shifted her focus to him completely and without any inhinitions, crossing her arms and raising her eyebrows she asked, "Mayank, hum yahan ITNI subah subah kyun aaye hain….mujh se ab aur suspense batdasht nahi hoga…"
Mayank laughed at her words and said plainly, "Suspense kahan hai?...I just love the sunrise you can see over this place…I just wanted you to see it too!"
See he did it again. He said a nothing too much, but it made her feel things still. He wanted her to see the place and the view that he loved. Why?
Well she was going to dare and ask him about it right now!
"Kyun?"
He replied looking at her keenly, "Kyunki I want you to feel the way I do….."he continued after a pause, "Happy when you look at it"
Nupur sighed at her dare. All it had done was another twisted statement from him that only puzzled her more. He was always impossible, she decided.
She glared at him and he held her shoulder to make her look towards the sky. He was right, it looked beautiful.
The way the sun reflected from the horizon, into the sea, making the dark sea sparkle in front of them, with an orange shade left over it as well, automatically made you feel fresh and smile.
She looked at him and smiled when he smiled back to her, happy that she had liked it too.
She looked beautiful to him in that mild shade from the sun. As much as she took in the beauty of the place by silently looking at that, she secretly realized the importance that she felt for herself in Mayank's eyes when he looked at her the way he did. Did she want to analyze what that must mean? Naah!
She didn't even want because for some inexplicable reason it felt right in place at the right place. She didn't know for how long she had looked at the shine in his deep eyes, she didn't know.
Was every morning as beautiful as she felt now? He knew not!
Who was he today? Not the Mayank that she knew. He didn't argue with her, he didn't snap at her or anything like that at all. If someone knew Mayank, they would surely bet all that they had that this Mayank was as sweet as it could ever get.
Mayank asked like a perfect host, "Tumhe pasand aaya na?"
Nupur looked at the sky, now turning pinkish purple in shade that looked equally beautiful as was the orangish one. The water still was deep just like it had been before sunrise but now it looked less scary. May be because the enchanting beauty that the sunrise had shared with it, covered up for all the mysteriousness of it, though still it was as mysterious as it were earlier.
She couldn't help comparing it to Mayank - deep, mysterious, secretive but above all embedded with the natural, amusing, fascinating, beautiful riches, hiding things that are valuable that it held within it. Once the time was right, like now, and she was able to look into Mayank just the way she was supposed to, looking in his eyes she felt she could look into his taint-less heart. He was…she couldn't quite exactly define it…too many qualities he had…she could feel it more easily though. It was a blissful feeling that she was opportuned to be standing there with him right now.
It was like the sea had gone wild in storms, but then it was the most peaceful thing to look at too. Mayank was somehow same too.She would never again be scared for the future with him, she should just relish in the happiness that it may bring to her.
Had one of her dreams just come true, in a better way? She didn''t know why exactly she was so extremely happy right now, but she was.
Mayank noticed the pink blotch on her face reflect the surroundings around them. He wasn't expecting that, she blushed a little too many times these days. Was she always so shy and he hadn't been able to notice it, or was it something else? He had to wonder because all he did was just look into her eyes and she could manage a blush?
Nupur replied his earlier question now, "Mujhe yeh sunrise hamesha yaad rahega Mayank…its really beautiful!"
Mayank smiled contented and held her hand, entwining it in his and said, "Seems, you felt the way I do.I am glad!" He more of meant what Nupur rejected in her thoughts.
But before Nupur calculated his hand holding, she saw him back out from the place with her and while walking asked, "Ab chalein?"
Nupur nodded in a 'No' and instead walked him back to where they had been standing and said, "Bas thodi der aur…" never wanting the moment to end. This silence that they had shared right now had spoken a little more than it usually did for them and Nupur wanted to enjoy the comfort that it had brought to her with her thinking having a horizon to look at and her heart having sea-like emotions, she stood there with Mayank seeing the both of them meet.
Mayank was comfortably holding onto her hand and she didn't leave it either until they left the place after some more easy talks that they had then.
She realized that a few of her wishes that she wanted to do with Mayank, that she had wished for just today, had come true just like that! Well, sometimes life seems too easy and gifting. She decided to bask in its glory as much as she could.
Mayank felt all along happy, right from the moment their day had started. He realized while she could share an esy silence with him, he also loved another aspect of hers, when she talked a lot and felt the need to listen to her more earnestly next time when she did that. She was all that he was looking forward to these days, it seemed.
