"I'm ok," she whispered, then the emotions crashed over her like a huge tidal wave and she buried her head into his chest, sobbing in his arms.
He had to fight back the tears himself as he wrapped his arms protectively around her. He closed his dark brown eyes, wanting to soothe & comfort her. With every tear that fell from her eyes, he felt like his heart was being ripped to pieces.
"They'll find us, they'll kill us," she whispered into his chest, shaking with cold & fear.
"Shh, I'm here now, they won't do anything. I'll protect you."
"Think again," came a gruff voice from behind them. They both let go of each other & turned around to see who had spoken.
Thunder boomed with a terrifying sound & lightning crashed as the rain fell even harder. There were 5 men on one side, 4 of which were stood behind their main man, the leader of the pack. He had a gun in his hand, fury in his eyes, finger on the trigger.
And on the opposite side were the 2 of them, their hands now intertwined. They both knew that they were looking at death in the eye, but still remained side by side, with each other, as if nothing could ever tear them apart.
"Please, don't do this," the girl pleaded, her tears merging with the cold, gusty rain. "Please! I'm so sorry for everything, but please don't... How will you live with yourself, huh?"
The man with the gun in his hand remained expressionless, glaring at the person who stood loyally by the girl's side.
"SHUT UP!" he bellowed at the girl, who jumped with shock at his sudden outburst. He focused his gaze at the young man next to her.
"You let go of her," he said in his gruff voice. "Give her back to us, where she belongs. Or else you die."
The young man shook his head with absolute determination.
"Never."
He tightened his grip on the girl's hand, who was looking at him, pure fear in her eyes. But there was only one thing she feared - losing the only person she had ever truly loved.
"One last chance," he offered, his finger still on the trigger.
The person shook his head once more, his fingers hurting from holding her hand so tight. But every ounce of pain he felt was worth it, as long as she was alive & breathing by his side.
He pulled the trigger, and the couple's hands fell loose. The young man tried to grip her hand once more, but he was distracted by the fact that the trigger had just been pulled & the gun was aimed at him.
The young girl saw that the gun was aimed at the person beside her, and in one swift movement, she stepped out directly in front of him. Thunder boomed as the bullet pierced in the left side of her chest - directly at her heart.
"Maan," were the last words she whispered before she fell back into his arms. He took one last look into her hazel eyes, then they closed slowly.
Horrified, he laid her down on the wet ground & pulled at her limbs, stroking her wet, brown hair, shaking her fiercely, but it was no use. She was lifeless.
"GEEET!" A piercing scream, filled with immense sadness came from his throat as he surrendured and laid his head on her stomach, covering himself with her blood.
Only a few minutes ago, he had vowed to protect her. And now she had sacrificed herself for him.
The thunder boomed even louder, almost as if to signal the end.
