"Dev, I can't even begin to tell you how angry I am that you kept something like this from me. Geet, I understand, even Maan veerji, but you? You're my husband, Dev. I don't expect you to keep secrets from me."
"I'm sorry Jaan, but we didn't want to worry you when you were already so worried about Meenal."
"Dev, I'm a mother. It's my job to worry about the children. That doesn't mean you can use that as an excuse to keep things from me. Not telling me that my best friend and nephew were shot at, is bad, very bad."
Dev held his ears and said sorry. Naintara wasn't to impressed by the gesture or the puppy dog look he was giving her. He was just about to start doing squats when she burst into tears, covering her face with her hands. Dev quickly moved to pull her into his arms.
"Shhh," he murmured, kissing her head as she clung to him desperately.
"I keep wondering when I'll wake up from this terrible dream," she sobbed into his chest.
"It will be okay. We'll get through this."
"Dev, how are we going to explain this to the children?"

"Maan," said Geet softly as she laid her head on his shoulder, "I'm worried about Di."
Maan drew her arm through his, lacing his long fingers between her delicate ones. "Dev is with her."
"But Maan, I know Di. She will be so upset. This will just kill her."
"Geet, it's late and we're home now. We can talk about this in the morning."
Geet didn't want to let it go so easily, but as the officer who had driven them home pulled into the driveway, she could see that they had a welcoming party there to greet them at the front door. All concerns were forgotten as Maan helped her out of the squad car. When she saw the little man of the house running towards her, she held her arms out wide and scooped him up into the biggest hug she could give.
"GT, GT, GT!" he cried over and over.
Geet smothered him in motherly kisses, and hugged him even harder as he asked, "GT are you hurt, are you killed?"
If the situation wasn't so heartrending, Geet would have laughed at the way he asked those questions. Instead, she tearfully replied, "No, I'm not killed. I'm fine."
"Why'd you leave me, GT? I didn't like it."
"I'm sorry, JD, I didn't do it on purpose."
"GT, you don't leave me any more. You stay with me, okay?"
"Okay." Then Geet suddenly frowned, thinking about the time and asked, "How come you're not in bed?"
JD gave a cute pout and complained, "I couldn't sleep without you, GT, I felt too bad."
Geet's heart melted at those words and she hugged JD tight again. Maan came up behind her and suggested that as it was very late, they should all go inside. Geet agreed and the three walked toward the door where Nakul and Dadima were also waiting to welcome Geet home.

Maan opened the door to Geet's room, not surprised to see the scene before him. Geet was sitting up in bed, looking down at a sleeping JD, stroking his hair lightly. Some how he wasn't surprised to see that she hadn't slept like the little boy who clutched her night shirt tightly with one hand. All of JD's worries were over now that he had his GT back, but his GT's worries were only just beginning.
Maan walked over soundlessly to her side and asked softly, "What's wrong, Geet?"
Geet turned her head towards him and replied, "I can't sleep. Not only am I worried about Di, but I'm also worried about JD. She killed his parents, Maan. How do we ever explain to him that his parents didn't die in an accident, but were murdered. What do we say?"
"We tell him the truth, when he's ready."
"The truth? I don't think I can."
"Of course you can. You're his mother now. You know him better than anyone else on earth. When the time is right, you will know what to say and how to say it."
Geet frowned, and turned her face away. "Why does everyone around me have to go through so much pain? Why do I have to go through so much pain? I don't understand destiny. What is it trying to do to me?"
Maan put his hand under her chin and turned her back to face him. "I don't have the answer to those questions, but I do know it was that same destiny that brought you to me, something I wouldn't change for the world. My life would be incomplete without you, Geet."
Unable to help himself, he leaned down and placed his lips gently against her own. Then, caressing her face softly, he said, "Go to sleep, Geet."
"I can't. My mind won't stop thinking and I don't feel a bit sleepy."
"Hmmm, I don't blame you. Any girl who is engaged to Maan Singh Khurana would have a tough time sleeping, when all the time she could spend thinking of him instead. Well, I might have a solution for that."
"Oh, really?" asked Geet wryly. "You think pretty highly of yourself."
"Naturally. I'm the famous MSK, didn't you know?"
"Alright, what is this 'solution'?"
"Well, the first step is to let your very handsome fiance put his arms around you," replied Maan as he stretched out on top of the covers next to her, wrapping his arms around her shoulders. Geet just looked at him, without speaking a word.
"Then, you look at your dashing fiance, just like you are right now, and memorize his every feature. As you do this, realize that now you will have wonderful dreams, filled with this very dashing fiance, because he was the last thing you were thinking of." Geet smiled and continued looking at Maan silently.
"Now that you've looked your fill at your incredible fiance, you can close your eyes and lay your head on his chest, where you will hear the soft beating of his heart. Knowing that the heart you hear beats for you, you can drift peacefully off to sleep."
Geet made no protests as Maan leaned them both back against the headboard and gently pressed her head onto his chest. Instead she snuggled closer and closed her eyes, quietly breathing in the sent of him. Soon her breathing was slow and regular as she drifted off to sleep, a sleep where she had wonderful dreams of her fiance, just as Maan promised.
