A Maaneet Tale

Chapter 7

The next morning, I slumped down onto my chair in my cabin. The Taveez was with Sir, which means Sir is my soulmate, and if that's the case then...

"Baabaji, ye kessi moseebat me daldiya hai mujhe" I looked up at the ceiling and asked out loud. The phone ringing broke me out of my thoughts.

"Khurana Constructions" I said and waited for an answer from the other line.

Maan: "Come to my cabin, NOW" he yelled from the other end of the phone. I swear I would need to go to the hospital to get my eardrums checked if this continued to happen everyday.

I looked at Maan from the window and surprisingly, he was already looking at me. He quickly looked away. I shook my head and got up from my chair, strutting over to next door.

I sat down on a chair holding my notebook and pen, ready to take notes.

Maan: "Your going to organsise a party. We just won a 300 crore deal" he said and flashed his very rare, genuine smile that dazzled me completely. It took me a minute to realise he was ACTUALLY smiling.

"That's great, Sir! What kind of party are we organising then?" I asked, writing Party at the top of the page.

Maan: "It's going to be an Indian Style party" he said. I wrote it down but I still had the urge to ask...

"Why not Modern, Sir?" I asked

Maan: "Do as your told" he replied back but I just shrugged

Maan: "I'm not going to tell you to do anything specific because your traditional yourself so you should know what to do" he said and leaned back on his chair.

I smiled. At least Sir thought me worthy of something.

Maan: "You need to write down as many notes as you can in 10 minutes in my cabin. And then your going to show me" he said and typed something on his laptop. I nodded and started to write things down.

***

I stared at Geet write her notes down. I don't know why, but today there was something different about Geet. She seemed more... glowing. I could stare at her like this all day but I focused my eyes on the laptop screen. I suddenly felt blank. I forgot what I was doing and I continued to stare at the computer screen until Geet spoke to me.

Geet: "Sir, when is this party being launched?" she asked me.

What a good question. I, the Maan Singh Khurana forgot to give such an important detail. What was wrong with me today? I cleared my throat.

"Today at 8:00pm" I said

Geet: "So soon?" she said and looked at me

"Do as your told" I said, irritated. I stared at her writing the notes down. My eye caught the black necklace which was clutched in her palm.

"Is that necklace special?" I asked and narrowed my eyes

Geet: "Yes. It means..." she began to explain but suddenly paused. She looked at me and then looked away again.

Geet: "Nevermind, you won't believe in this stuff anyway" I heard her say. I still wanted to know.

"But I still want to know" I said and looked at the necklace curiously. Ever since she had come back from the temple, she had been carrying that necklace around.

Geet: "It's... Well... This Taveez is meant to lead me to my..." she said and looked at me again. She looked nervous.

Geet: "It's meant to lead me to my... To my happiness. It's a good luck necklace" she said and looked away from me. I could tell she was lying but I decided not to question her further. I didn't want to distract her from her notes.

"Right. Show me your notes" I said and she handed me her notebook. I looked at her notes and was surprised when I found she had done over 4 pages of notes.

"I'm impressed. Right, I'll give you the party organiser's phone number. You will organise the party and Adi will help you. I have already explained to Adi what he needs to do. Do you understand what I'm saying?" I said and looked at her for her agreement.

Geet: "Ji, Sir. Right on it, Sir" she said and stood up

"Geet" I called out and she turned around and looked at me questioningly.

***

I turned around and looked at Maan. I needed to get out of his cabin. I hated lying to be honest and I didn't want to tell a thousand lies just because of a stupid necklace.

"Ji, Sir?" I said and clutched my notebook along with the taveez. He came up to me and took my notebook and pen and set it on the table. He put his hands around my waist and gently pinned me against the wall. I looked around me, nervously. What was he doing?

Maan: "Sameera is going to be at the party. You do understand what I'm saying... don't you?" he whispered seductively and nibbled my ear. I rested my hands on his chest and closed my eyes in pleasure.

Maan: "So... do you?" he whispered again and when I opened my eyes, his beautiful eyes were looking right back at me.

"Ji, Sir" I managed to squeak out. He slowly pulled away from me and suddenly stopped. He looked down at his chest and I realized the Taveez was stuck to one of his buttons.

I stared at the Taveez in horror.

"Sorry, Sir" I said and pulled on the necklace. It came out from his buttons and I quickly exited my cabin, not forgetting my notebook and pen.

I sat back on my chair in my cabin and breathed heavily. I looked at the cup which was full of water. I didn't care if it had poison in it. I needed to breath. I needed to get a grip on myself. I grabbed the cup of water and drank it as if I was dying.

I slammed the cup back down on the table and looked at the window on my left. Sir was thankfully not there to see my state.

Sir totally overwhelmed me. He was so beautiful and so good-looking, I began to wonder how he didn't have a girlfriend already. Why did he have to put up with me?

I held the Taveez in front of me in mid-air. It was twirling left and right and the metal was still so shiny. I didn't know whether this Taveez was telling me the truth, but if it was, I didn't deserve Sir. He deserved a better person than me.

As the metal was twirling left and right, I swore I saw the word 'Maan' written on it. I clutched the necklace tightly and then looked at the metal again.

Nothing.

It was just a hallucination.

This stupid Taveez was driving me crazy. I decided to just abandon it somewhere. I went outside and just chucked it at a random direction. It landed beside some black car but I don't give a damn. Sir was NOT my soulmate.

But some strange feeling inside me told me to just stay there. I continued to glare at the stupid Taveez until a tap on my shoulder startled me. I jumped and turned around. It was Adi Sir. I breathed a sigh of relief, and smiled. Thank goodness it wasn't Maan Sir.

Adi: "Geet Ji? W-w-what are you doing here? I've been l-looking for you everywhere!" he stuttered and pushed his glasses up his nose.

"Nothing Adi Sir, I just came out for some fresh air. Let's go, we have a party to organise" I said and clutched my notebook to me tightly.

Adi Sir laughed his usual quirkly laugh and nodded. We both got inside a car and drove away to the hall which the party was going to be launched in.

*** few hours later ***

I looked at the clock. It was 5:00pm. I decided I should go and check what Geet and Adi had done so far. I shut down my laptop and locked my Cabin and exited Khurana Constructions. I walked up to my car but a shiny metal caught my eye. I looked down at the ground and saw that it was the same necklace Geet had been carrying around all day.

"Ye Geet bi na. Chalti firti disaster hai" I said and picked up the necklace. It twirled around and for a second, I thought I saw the word 'Geet' was written on the metal. I blinked and looked at the metal again and realized I was just hallucinating.

I shook my head again and decided to return it to Geet when I meet her next. I shoved it into my pocket and got inside my car.

It was about 10 minutes later I arrived at the hall which the party was going to be launched in. Outside, it was already decorated with lights and I could see and hear the drummers practicing. I went inside the hall and was impressed with the decorations.

I finally saw Geet. She was standing on a stool fixing some lights. Adi was right beside her, commanding some people to hurry up.

But my main attention was Geet. She didn't have her dubatta around her neck like it normally was. She had tied her dubatta around her waist like a punjabi, and her hair wasn't in a big braid like it normally was. It was tied in a loose ponytail, the hairband on the verge of falling off, and once the hairband fell from her hair, her straight hair fanned right around her. I gasped at how beautiful she could look with her hair down.

And then she saw me.

It was like time had stood still. We kept staring at each other and then I saw her sway, her arms waving in front of her to catch something to keep her balance.

She was going to fall.

I automatically ran up to her and when she fell, she fell in my arms. I hugged her tightly to myself in fear she would disappear.

I set her down on the floor and looked at her.

"Are you okay?" I asked gently. I looked at her up and down in case she was hurt but she seemed fine.

She nodded shyly at me and looked down at the ground. I tried to regain my strong and angry posture.

"How much is it done?" I asked her in a firm voice

Geet: "Sir, bas hogaya hai. Khana ka intizaam be hogaya hai. Bas decorations ko fix karahi ti. Adi Sir" she pointed at the decorations with her eyes and Adi immediately stood up on the stool and started to fix the decorations.

"Go and get ready, Geet. Adi, you too" I ordered and eyed the clock. It was 6:30pm already. I had to get ready as well.

Geet: "Ji, Sir" she nodded and headed towards the exit.

"Geet" I called out. She turned around and looked at me questioningly. I handed her back her necklace.

"Don't drop it again" I said and I tried not to smile.

***

I looked at the Taveez in my palm in horror. It was with Sir again. How did it get there? I then realized that the black car must have been Sir's and he probably saw the necklace. I sighed again. This Taveez will never leave my tail.

And on top of that, I didn't have anything to wear for the party.

I went back to Khurana Constructions and there, I saw Pinky in my cabin. Pinky is a staff member who is also a very good friend of mine. I smiled when I saw her.

"Pinky, tu yaha kya karahi hai? Jhake party ke liye tayar ho na" I said and put some important files safely in the draw.

Pinky: "Aare, mein to tayar hu" she said. I looked at her up and down and I realized I hadn't even checked her out properly. I smacked my head.

"Sorry yaar, mera dimaag patanahi kaha gayab hojata hai" I said and collected my bag.

Pinky: "So... Tu kya pehne wali hai? Salwar Kameez ya Saree?" she asked

I didn't say anything.

Pinky: "You aren't going to the party?" she exclaimed and gasped

"Ja to rahi hu Pinky. Lekin mere paas kuchnahi hai pehne keliye" I said and looked down at my feet sadly.

Pinky: "Fikar not! Mein hu na! Let's go to my house. I have this amazing Saree that I was going to wear but changed my mind. I think it would suit you alot" she said and grabbed my arm. I shook my head but she still insisted on taking me to her house. I finally gave in and sat in her car with her.

Her house looked small but cosy from the outside. It was a really beautiful house and when I went inside, it was even more beautiful. Pinky lived with her Dad. I really liked Pinky's Dad. He's like my Dad and he reminded me of my childhood memories. I smiled at Pinky's Dad as Pinky dragged me up the stairs to her bedroom.

Pinky: "So... what do you think?" she said and handed me over her saree. I gasped. It was so beautiful. It was a simple brown saree with simple border embroidery. It was transparant.

I smiled.

Pinky: "Let's go. I'll deck you up" she squealed in excitement and handed me over the saree. She threw me into the bathroom and ordered for me to change into it.

After I had changed into it, she sat me down in front of the mirror and gently brushed my hair. I fiddled with the Taveez as she brushed some neutral lipgloss on my lips and fixed me with some long, but simple white earrings. She put on a simple bracelet on my left wrist and showered me with a fragrance that smelt just like white roses. I loved the fragrance that wafted around me.

"Thanks Pinky. I love you so much" I said and gave her a big hug

Pinky: "Compliment me later. Look at the time! It's 7:50pm. We better get going" she said and dragged me downstairs.

Pinky's Dad watched as we left.

Pinky's Dad: "You both look so beautiful. Enjoy the party" he said cheerily. I felt tears prick my eyes as he smiled at me. I smiled back at him and ran to catch up with Pinky.

***

I looked at the time on my watch. It was 7:55pm and Geet was still not here. What was I going to do with this girl? But I had to say she had organised the party very well.

I looked down at myself. I wore a simple black shirt, and jeans. I couldn't be bothered with all the dressing up and...

Why had it become quiet so suddenly?

I looked around myself and then I looked at the woman who the spotlight was on. I gasped as Geet entered the party. She looked... beautiful. I was mesmerized.

I stared at her as she slowly walked towards me. Slow music started to blare through the speakers and everybody started to dance around me.

Geet: "I can't dance" she whispered.

I was about to say something when I heard somebody's heels. I looked up at the entrance and saw Sameera in a saree as well. She looked beautiful but behind the beautiful mask, she looked ugly. I watched her fiddle with the saree. She shouldn't have worn one if she couldn't handle it properly.

I shook my head turned back to Geet. So... Miss Geet Handa couldn't dance?

I put my hands on her waist and lifted her up. Her high heels slid off her feet and I propped her on top of my feet. I put one hand on her warm waist and she rested her hands on my chest. I started to sway along with the slow, soft music.

"You look very beautiful tonight" I complimented and watched her look down at the ground shyly.

Geet: "Thank you, Sir" she said and looked back up at me. Her eyes rested on mine as we slowly danced along with the slow music.

I pulled her towards me more, so we were sort of hugging.

"Is Sameera behind me?" I whispered

Geet: "Yes. She's looking towards us. She's not dancing with anyone" she whispered back

So I broke away from the semi-hugging position and kissed her. Her lips were the softest and most delicious ones I had ever felt and tasted yet. Her lips were sweet and I could hear everybody gasp in shock around us, but I didn't care.

I broke away from the kiss and kissed her more desperately this time. I needed more. I needed her to quench my thirst...

I sucked in her lips and traced every inch of her mouth. She was so tasty, so sweet, so gentle...

I stopped swaying along to the music and cupped her small face in my hands. My hands went down to her waist and I brang her even closer to me so nothing could seperate us. I squeezed her waist as my thirst was finally being quenched...

I opened my eyes and at the same time, her's opened as well. Her big pools of brown glazed into my eyes and closed again. I broke away from her and I could hear her heavy, ragged breathing. Her cheeks were now bright pink and I realized the music had stopped and everybody started clapping around us. I smiled.

The music had started again to a slow beat and I realized she was clutching the collar of my shirt with the Taveez still in her hand. I brang her close to me again and we started to sway along to the music.

"What's so special about this necklace?" I asked as we swayed.

Geet: "I already told you" she said, still breathless from the kissing.

"I could tell you were lying" I said, annoyed. What was so secretive about the necklace that she had to lie to me?

Geet: "Do you really want to know?" she said and her eyes fluttered down to the ground again.

"Yes" I replied and waited for her answer.

She brang herself closer to me so we were in a semi-hugging position again. We were still swaying along to the music and I could feel Sameera's glare on my back.

Geet: "When I went to the temple... The priest gave it to me. He said that this Taveez" she whispered and paused

"Hmm" I replied. Maybe she thought I wasn't listening to her.

Geet: "This Taveez would lead me to my soulmate" she whispered in my ear. My soft grip on her waist tightened as I heard the word I hated the most.

Geet: "This Taveez keeps ending up with you... But I don't believe that we can ever be together. It's impossible. We are both such different people" she whispered.

I don't know why, but when I heard that I felt slightly offended and I felt my heart had been let down. I didn't actually love her so I had no idea why I had felt so offended.

"Your right" I nodded even though I felt a small lump in my throat.

The music changed to one of the songs from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi'. I lifted her up and her feet easily slid back in her heels.

(Click here to listen to the song)

Please imagine Maan and Geet dancing like that 😆

***

I immediately started dancing to my favourite song. I had seen the movie Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and I had also loved it.

But I don't know why Maan Sir had become so aggressive suddenly. Maybe it's because of the Taveez.

I looked at him in the eyes as we danced to the song.

Maan: "I thought you said you couldn't dance" he said through gritted teeth as we danced along

"I guess I changed my mind, Sir" I said and twirled around and around...

At the end of the song everybody clapped and cheered for us. I looked at Sameera and she was red, fuming with anger.

"Sir, wo dekho" I said and gestured towards Sameera. Maan had an evil smirk on his face and I could tell he was enjoying this scene.

Suddenly, Maan grabbed me again and brang me so close to him, nothing could seperate us.

Maan: "We both are very different from each other... But who said we couldn't be together?" he whispered

Before I could even reply, he sealed my lips with a kiss.

Precap: I widened my eyes as I saw my past come in front of me.
