Chandu n Niru embraced each other, perhaps for the last time, as they remembered their past... their first meeting, their confession, their silly fights, their first kiss, the feeling of true love.... both of them were broken as they felt the pain of separation killing them..... n as the sun was setting, it appeared as though two silhouettes merged as one...
PAST
She had just reached Mumbai... with only one dream in mind... her baba's medication... she had made him say yes to come to Mumbai, but he had his own conditions...
"hum subah hote hi gaaon wapas aayenge" her baba said firmly...
"thik hai baba... subah wapas aayenge... lekin abhi chalo toh sahi..." and so he agreed to "Visit" Mumbai....
she now looked at the sleeping figure on her lap... her baba.. the person she loved more than anyone in her entire life... her support, her strength, her encouragement...
Finally Mumbai was here... she woke her baba up and carried her luggage out... she made her baba get down and was about to get down when somebody pushed her and she fell down on the platform with her suitcases....
"oye aankhe hai ya button??? Dekh ke nahin chal sakte kya??? Hum aap jaise ladkon ko acchhi tarah se jaanthe hain... Akeli ladki dekhi nahi ke chedna shuru kiya?? Aap kya samajhthe, hum gaaon se aaye hain toh hum shehar ke taur-tareekey nahi samajhte?? Abhi maafi maango aur chaltey bano... warna police thaana le jaakar ander karwa dengey...." she spoke in one go, in one breath....
This was how Niru was used to speaking ever since the time her father was termed a "Retard" in the village... she had to face the villagers and that was where she learnt that the more they bent, the more humiliated they were... she dint care for anyone anymore....
Everyone around them at the railway station froze, but then resumed their work coz Mumbai locals weren't gonna wait for people who had to go to their work places....
"bol diya??? Ab meri baat suno.. nah tumse takraane ka mujhe koi shaukh hai aur na hi baat karne ka.... aur jahan maafi maangne ki baat hai, toh haan... i'm sorry... i'm sorry that i came across a girl like you..." he spoke coldly...
His eyes were sharp but were absolutely calm... his face showed no expressions... no doubt he was handsome, a well toned body, a face to drool over and an appearance that was fit to die for, but he spoke in a tone that was contrasting to his image....
She jus could not digest the fact that somebosy had just yelled at her... no she wasn't gonna give up so easily.... "aap humse aise kaise baat kar sakte hain??? Pehle dhakka dete hain aur phir....."
He held her arms with both his hands, pushed her and pinned her to a pillar... he came near her face and now their faces were less than an inch apart... he looked into her eyes for a moment...
"BOLA NA SORRY" he yelled at her, which caused everyone to look at them once again... screaming this, he left her with a jerk and walked away as though nothing happened...
Niru saw him disappearing in the crowd... she trembled with fear... she just could not believe what just happened...
"nahi ... hum kamzor nahi pad sakte... is shehar main zindagi bitani hai toh hume muzboot banna hoga... aur phir baba ki zimmedaari... woh aadmi khud ko samjhte kya hai... koi bhi aake darayega aur hum darr jaayenge?? Hum kamzor nahi padenge... bilkul nahi..." thinking this, she made a firm decision in her mind and said "uthiye baba, didi ke ghar chaltey hain..."
"haan haan chalo... bhook bhi lagi hai...."
AT SHARDA'S HOUSE
"niklo baahar... naa jaane kahan kahan se aate hain, bhikari kahinke... maine yahan koi dharmshaala nahi khol rakha hai, ke jo chhahe mooh uthaye aajaaye..." spoke sharda, Niru's elder sister, in the loudest tone possible...
"didi hum kahan jaayenge?? AAp hi ka sahara lekar aaye they hum...Baba bhi sath mein hain??aap hi kahiye, is waqt hum kahan jaayenge???"
"arrey kahin bhi rehlo, itna bada shehar hai, kahin na kahin jagah mil jaayegi.. aur waise bhi, aane se pehle mujhse poochkar aaye theu kya, jo abh pooch rahi ho??? niklo baahar... bhikari kahinke..." saying this she closed the door on their face...
"kya hua Niru??? Usne darwaza kyun bandh kar diya?"
Niru was dumb-struck... she dint know what to do... if she went back to the village, people would surely call them "good-for-nothing losers" and she dint want that to happen...
"chalo baba... chaltey hain..."
"lekin kahan beta???" "maaloom nahi baba.... lekin chaltey hain"
PRESENT
Embracing each other, Niru spoke up after a long while... she had smiles on her face...
"humne sapney mein bhi nahi socha tha, ke jis insaan ne humse raiway station pe itni battameezi se baat ki, aaj hum us insaan se, yun khule aam, baahon mein baahein daalkar, beach par, usse pagalon ki tarah pyar karne ka daawa kar rahi hoti... sach kahun toh us din humne bhagwan se maanga tha ki aapki shakal hume dobara bilkul na dikhaaye... lekin aaj..."
"aaj??? Aaj kya Niru" chandu said...
Niru blushed and said "aaj wohi insaan humare jeene ka sahara hai... wohi insaan humara pehla pyar hai, aur aakhri bhi..."
"maine us din bahut battameezi se baat kin na???"
"haan, bahut..." saying this, both of them chuckled....
And as they embraced each other, Niru's cellphone started ringing... they came out of each other's hold and Niru saw that it was Sarja's call... chandu indicated her to pick the call...
"Hello.. haan sarja, boliye..."
"Niru, kahan ho tum, kabse bus stop par tumhara intezar kar raha hoon..."
"haan abhi aayi... main paas mein hi hoon.. aati hoon... bas paanch minute.."
"acchha thik hai thik hai.. aaram se aana...main intezar kayunga... bye..."
"bye.."
She looked at chandu who was just looking at her into her eyes... he was lost in her and so was she, wen she looked at him... he cupped her face with his palms... and tucked her hair behind her ears... she blushed and looked at the sand grains on the shore... he made her look up at him and went close to her... she closed her eyes and so did he...
"I love u Niru..."
And he slowly placed his lips on hers... that kiss conveyed so much... there was love, pain, assurance and the feeling of being there was each other... he kissed her for a long time.. No, it wasn't any passionate kiss or any sign of lust... she loved him true and so did he... he broke the kiss from her lips and then kissed her forehead... she opened her eyes and looked at him... n both of them saw immense pain.... both of them were going through a turmoil from within...
"abhi jaao.. woh tumhara intezar kar raha hai.." chandu spoke after a while...
"kya aap sach mein chahthe hain ke hum chaley jaayen? Ek baar iss shaadi ki wajah bata dijiye, hum sab sambhaal lenge... hum aapke bagair nahi reh sakte hain chandu... aap humey kabhi chodke mat jaaiye... vaada kijiya humse, aap hamesha humara saath dengey..."
She hugged him tightly before she could burst out crying to which he said "jaao Niru.. warna dair ho jaayegi"
They broke the hug and chandu looked into Niru's eyes.... all he saw was love, pure love...
"bye chandu..."
"bye Niru, apna khayal rakhna, aur mere dost ka bhi"
She gave a faint smile and walked away slowly.. he saw her retreating figure and turned towards the horizon... when she turned back to see him, he wasn't looking at her... she walked to the place where sarja was waiting for her...
Meanwhile chandu says to himself "yeh toh bas shuruaat hai sarja... abhi toh bahut saari cheezon ka hisaab lena hai... tum pachtaaogey, yeh sochkar ke kyun tumne ussey pyar kiya... bas mujhe sahi waqt ka intezar hai... jo maine saha hai, woh tumhe bhi sehna padega sarja.. woh zakhm aaj bhi utne hi gehre hain... shayad tu bhool chukka hai, lekin main yeh baat kabhi nahi bhula sakta... jo dard mujhe mila hai, woh tujhe bhi milega... yaad rakho"
and as he thought of Niru, he said to himself "haan main tumse
pyar karta hoon Niru, lekin tumhare liye mera pyar, sarja ke liye mere nafrat se zyada nahi ho sakta... aur phikar mat karna Niru, yeh shaadi toh main bilkul honey nahi doonga... apna vaada jo poora karna hai, aur badla bhi...." saying this, he looks towards the sky and the dark red horizon...
