Chapter 12

"Rohan for the millionth time – No!" she said looking frustrated as ever. "Oh come on Nupur! Please! Just one night that's all I'm asking!" he pleaded again and got a glare from her in return. "Okay, okay... " she said giving up, "just one dinner! But you know that nothing is going to come out of it..""Don't be so sure Nupsie", he said giving her a flirtatious look. But she was more than used to it by now. "Oh I am very sure", she said walking out to the garden.

"Aditya! I told you not to play in the mud! Look now you're covered in it!" she said with disapproval clearly visible in her voice. "But it's fun mom! You should also try it", he said throwing mud around. "Okay stop right now!" and he did. His mother's threatening voice was enough to make him stop.

"Kitni baari bola hai tumhe! But tum kabhi bhi mamma ki baat sunte kyun nahi ho?" she said taking a hose and washing off the mud from his clothes and his body. After she was done, he lovingly put his tiny arms around her neck and kissing her cheeks apologised saying, "Sorry, mom! I love you!"she pulled his cheek. "I love you too! Now stop buttering me up and lets get you changed", said Nupur carrying her two year old son inside the house.

"Mom? Is gunjan maasi getting married?" he asked as his mom poured some of the bubble liquid in the bath tub. "Yes baby she is", she said making sure the water was warm enough. "And she is marrying Samrat from ...from London?" "Yes, honey. And he is Samrat uncle... he's older than you", she said. "I want to get married too!" he said playing with his rubber ducky. "You will, beta. But right now you're my baby. When you're old enough then you can", she said smiling at her little angel. The reason why she was still breathing.

"I missed you guys!" said Mayank tightly hugging Shilpa and Samrat. "We missed you too!" they said in chorus. "Finally you're here!" said Samrat patting his back. "So Mister Shergill... Where is your fianc?" he asked sounding extremely excited for his friend. "She is looking forward to see you too, yaar! We'll meet tonight... Dinner ka plan bana hai...at this new restaurant", he said as they sat in the living room after lunch. "Cool", he said and sighed. He was finally back to where his family was and he was happy.

"Rohan get your arm off me!" said an irritated Nupur as Rohan smoothly slid his arm across her waist as he led her into the restaurant. "Hmm... Mood nahi hai", he said as they reached the host. "Reservation for two—Khurana", he said to the host standing behind the register. "Just a minute sir", he replied politely. "Rohan, I'll leave right now if you don't get your hands off of me! I'm serious!" she uttered in an angry whisper, glaring at him. "Okay! Okay! Sorry!... tum seedha aisey threaten kyun karti ho? Thoda toh socha karo mere bare mein!" he said making a puppy face. She finally gave in and smiled at the face he made. He was an extremely decent guy and never crossed his limits. It was just that he was extremely flirtatious but it was all harmless.

"Dude! What happened?" said Samrat clicking his fingers as he saw Mayank completely lost and aloof as they sat at their seats waiting for Gunjan to arrive. "Nothing", whispered Mayank and tried to smile as something very delicate had just broken inside yet again at the sight he just witnessed.

He saw her. After three dreaded years he finally saw her. And the way he got to see her made his heart twist painfully. She was with another man. Its just been three years and she is seeing someone else? His heart questioned with a painful yearning. Three years is a long time... and she can see whoever she wants! Retaliated his still working logical mind.

The way that man had his arm around her...the way he said something and she smiled back at him... That smile! Oh how terribly he had fallen for that smile!... and now that smile was directed to that man. He felt disgusted by her due to past memories. And then he felt disgusted by himself at the way his heart reacted to her presence with another man.

Tonight is Sam's night! He told himself. I cant ruin it because of her. No more am I gonna let you affect me Nupur Bhushan! He thought with determination but he knew in his heart that this resolution was beyond impossible for him to follow.

"What's wrong Mayank? You were fine when you reached here! Ever since we went out for dinner tonight you've been acting strange", said Samrat as hours later Mayank sat on the front porch smoking cigarette after cigarette in the chilly December wind. "I'm perfectly alright!" he replied crushing the stubs under his shoes and looked at Samrat saying, "Gunjan is a great girl... I'm happy for you bro." Samrat finally smiled at the mention of Gunjan's name. "I can't wait to marry her! Just one more week!" he said with utmost excitement causing some emotion to sparkle in Mayank's eyes but he blinked and quickly smiled and patted his back.

"All the stuff is ready in the kitchen", said Nupur as she tied the strings on Gunjan's blouse getting her ready for the official Engagement ceremony. "Samrat's going to be here any minute now!" said Nupur smiling lovingly at her friend in the mirror. Gunjan faintly smiled after speaking hesitantly, "Uhh... Nupur...I met Mayank last night..." "Oh", was all Nupur said and continued working on her blouse. "You know he is going to be here today too", she said looking for some emotion on Nupur's face. "Ofcourse I know..." she said sighing, "he is sam's best friend!"

"Have you thought about what you're going to say to him?" asked Gunjan softly. "About what?" she asked acting unaware. "About aditya, Nupur" replied Gunjan. "I don't know..." sighed Nupur. "If he asks then I'll ...I'll tell him", she said sounding unsure. "Nupur... you know he is going to assume the worst if you don't say anything at all!" said Gunjan exasperated. "I know, I know! All he does is assume stuff!" said Nupur sounding tired.

Gunjan softly held her hand and said, "He still has that sadness in his eyes Nupur. When I saw him yesterday I could see it clearly. You should tell him you're still madly in love with him." "But he hates me now, Gunjan... Its over."

"Samrat I'll be back in a second", said Mayank as they waited in the living room for Gunjan to arrive and for the ceremony to start. "You need to quit smoking Mayank ...seriously!", replied Samrat knowing exactly what Mayank had to go "out" for. Mayank just patted his back and left.

Right when he was about to take his cigarette out he heard faint voices of kids playing just a few feet away. He walked towards the sound to witness two little boys playing in the mud and getting their fancy sherwanis very very dirty.

"Hey! Aren't you boys supposed to be inside?" he asked trying to sound strict like an adult but smiled when he saw their eyes go wide in shock as they realized someone had walked in on their "not allowed" fun game.

"Why doesn't anybody understand that kids are supposed to play and not attend stupid functions?" said one of them sounding very hyper. "Actually I agree with you... but I'm not sure if your mothers will be happy to see that you've gotten your new clothes dirty already", said Mayank.

And just when Mayank spoke those words he heard her voice. He could still identify her voice without even looking. She sounded angry. She was obviously looking for someone as she continuously echoed "Aditya". The boy infront of him looked like he had just seen a ghost. And looking at the woman behind Mayank he said, "Mom! It was not my fault! Ravi made me come out here!" he said sounding sincere as ever.

Mayank turned around only to find the one person he had thought he would avoid during this trip looking beautiful as ever as he got a closer view of her than last night. Her face paled as she looked at him but still her skin glowed. And then he realized. Did that boy just call her "Mom"?
