Part 9 War and Peace Update 3
She breathed hard on the doorframe. She watched him secretly through the door crack as she hid herself partly behind the closed door and the wall. The instrumental of "Jiya Jale..." that played on the speakers of the marriage hall did little to soothe her nerves. Her gaze traversed his shirtless back as the white sacred thread slung over one of his shoulders cut across his sinewy muscles diagonally. It was only natural when such sultry, musky notes of the flute and tender sting of the piano came as tantalizing notes to the ear, she would want to draw patterns on the floor with her tip toes, spread the sensual beauty of her undulating hips in the air that surrounded her. Perhaps even carve out all her deep desires in thin air with her slender lady like fingers that came together and sometimes fanned out to form mudras that spoke in hushed tones...A picture that played out in her mind now as she closed her eyes.
It was an intense cavernous knot that she felt at times when she danced in the rain or on occasions of pure joy. Oddly, there had only been a handful of times when she had experienced it and it was all scandalously surprising when she felt the same deep seated smolder take root in her now, when he carelessly threw around whetting maneuvers as he evaded two of her teenager cousins.
She gulped down a bolt of desire as she saw him turn in her direction and yet another profile of him came into view. As he lifted his hand high up to wave to another distant cousin of hers, his brawny muscles formed smooth contours on his fair torso and shoulders leading her to quickly close her eyes shut. She wondered if she would wind up in hell or titled a voyeur for eyeing a man this intently. Did he know he was waging a different kind of war on her, even when he was this clueless?
But soon a negative emotion was taking her over as a harsh course of anger rushed through her body, almost ready to fire up all that would come in contact with her. The door handle jilted a little from the pressure she was sinfully applying on it. All arising as Mythreyi came from behind to close his eyes and the other femme of a flirt, Lalli raced to tickle him.
"Seriously appa kitta sollanum (I should tell appa)" She said as she approached the bed and fell back carelessly.
"Hmm?" Meera buzzed clueless, munching on murruku (A fried south indian savory) and rattled the pages of the gossip magazine she was reading. Somehow she had not paid attention to the range of emotions that had been on prompt display on Geet's face, while she had played peeping tom.
"Nothing..." Geet said piquing Meera's interest while lying to her side on the bed; her face still blushing red from their little visual tete a tete a few minutes ago.
She looked back curiously to the woman who seemed far less excited but all the more flushed for a bride.
"Common...I know you don't say nothing for nothing" she said raising her left brow.
"I think he could use a shirt...Did you see Mythreyi ogle at him? We need to find a guy for her..." she turned abruptly in bed to face Meera "soon" she stressed the word like her own life was in danger.
"Adi Kalli (You thief)...You have fallen for him already...haven't you?" Meera jumped up and came running with a wide smile. Geet's cheeks were warming up one shade deeper scarlet as the words rang inside her.
She had never thought she would fall for a guy, except for the one time -sitting under the tree- she had momentarily felt stomach clenching urge and need to trace out the mystery guy who had helped her all of that summer; but this was embarrassingly different for her to find words to describe what she was going through. She needed to kiss him so bad. And that was indeed the first time she wanted to surrender without barriers. But he was playing her needs like it was a game. Of course she had not disclosed what she made of him and he had not dared ventured there yet. Perhaps it was all too late to even consider he might try to pull so much as a stunt tonight, given their petty wager on who approaches the other first.
She didn't know how newly weds handled it. Were there standard icebreakers? Was the riding up each other game normal? Or was it just him? She had many questions with no answers and felt an awkwardness crawl under her skin as the thoughts picked pace.
Just as Meera tickled her by her neck and underarms, coercing her soon to be family, to accept she was secretly fantasizing about her shirtless hunk of a husband, Susheela Athai came in unannounced.
"Di Geetu (Hey Geetu), you are not ready yet? Hurry up...Everyone have already assembled for the Vilayattu (Games ceremony)...your husband is waiting too..." She said as she teased Geet and pinched her left cheek.
"Argh!" she winced in pain and jerked up on her feet. Well the word "husband" would need some getting used to, she thought and shied away immediately.
Half twisting her torso to take off the pin from her pallu, she pulled off the sari in a swift moment. She had to switch to a Red silk sari, ornate with gold silk flowers for the last ceremony of the day; before they left for home.
To be continued...
There is just one more part of the marriage ceremony and with that the south Indian marriage comes to a close. Hopefully I haven't bored you guys with my details and indulgence into the ceremonies. Please do post and comment your likes and feedback/suggestions.
