Katrina guided Sid towards her parents leaving behind a completely bewildered Ridhimma.
'Sid, beta! How are you?' said the distinguished looking man.
'Oh my goodness ! Sid beta, you're even more handsome then ever.' The lady next to him gushed.
As Sid was engulfed by Katrina's parents, Ridhimma looked on, feeling completely vulnerable.
The Modis and their guests were completely engrossed with each other laughing and chatting away, seemingly catching up on old times. Ridhimma looked on as Katrina stood next to her husband, with her arm casually around his waist looking up adoringly into his face. Sue was introducing Raj to the newly arrived family, obviously excited to see everyone.
'Are you okay Ridhimma?' Naina asked with concern as she saw Ridhimma rooted to the spot.
'Huh…..er …….yes I…….' Ridhimma looked at Naina with confusion not really knowing what was happening around her.
'Abhi, who are these people?' asked Yuvi.
'They're the Mehras. They're old family friends of Badi ma and Bade Papa. They were neighbours for years in America till Katrina went to university in another state and her parents moved with her. In fact Katrina was the girl next door. Everyone thought that she and Sid would get married eventually. He was crazy about her and they dated for years and ……Ow Nikki!! What was that for!'
Abhi looked at his wife in surprise while rubbing his leg where she had just kicked him. Nikki looked as if she was about to kill him. He suddenly looked where she was pointing to with her eyes , then wished he could kick himself.
Ridhimma looked as if she was about to collapse. All the blood had drained from her face and she suddenly looked very pale.
'Ridhimma?,' Nikki quickly went to hold her as she began to sway.
'I…Im fine….I.' Ridhimmas mouth had gone suddenly dry and she felt as if the words were stuck in her throat and she couldn't speak. Everything around her was spinning .
Katrina. Sid was crazy about her. Marry.
As the friends all gave each other a worried look concerned about Ridhimma, Abhi's words began to ring in her ears. Ridhimma suddenly started to feel suffocated. She watched as Sid, Katrina, Sue and Raj laughed and talked together, oblivious of their surroundings and her heart sank. She couldn't take anymore. She had to leave.
Still looking intently at Sid's back, Ridhimma gingerly started taking a step back. Just then, she felt him turn.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
'Katrina?'
Sid couldn't believe it. It had been 5 years since he had last seen her and she was even more stunning then he remembered her. As she hugged him affectionately, he was transported back in time to his happy childhood, when 10 year old Katrina and her family had moved in next door to their home in Houston. She was an only child and the apple of her parent's eyes. Sid and Sue became friends with Katrina instantaneously and had a lot of fun growing up together. They all went to the same school and Katrina was in the same year as Sid. Soon they became inseparable in school and at home and it was just natural that their feelings towards each other changed from friendship to something more.
It was when the high school prom was nearing that Sid first officially asked Katrina on a date. She had agreed happily and he remembered the moment when she had emerged from her room dressed in her white ballgown looking like an angel, and he couldn't take his eyes of her. After the dance had ended they had shyly held hands and when he finally reached her doorstep to drop her off home, he bent down and kissed her softly on the lips. He still remembered the butterfly sensation in his stomach of his first kiss.
Things between them changed after that day, They were no longer just friends but were a couple. Both the Modis and the Mehras were happy with their relationship and assumed they would eventually get married. His mother would laughingly call them her Devdas and Paro, telling everyone they were childhood sweethearts.
But about 5 years ago things changed, when the time came for the youngsters to choose their professions. Sid decided to follow in his parents footsteps and become a doctor while Katrina wanted to pursue fashion. Unfortunately, that meant that they would both be in different colleges in different states. As the Mehras could not bear to be parted from their daughter they decided to sell their house in Houston and move to New York to be with her. Sid and Katrina spent every waking moment with each other before she had to leave. As the day got closer, their hearts got heavier.
Finally the moment of separation arrived. Sid and Katrina clung onto each sadly, proclaiming that they would call and write everyday and spend every waking moment thinking of each other. And they promised to meet each other every holiday. At first, the phone calls and messages were every hour, but slowly as both Sid and Katrina became busy with their work and new friends , the communication between them began to decrease. Sid couldn't even remember exactly when he stopped missing Katrina but one day he woke up and didn't think about her anymore. And after finishing his medical degree and on his dad's insistence he had come to India and the rest was history.
As Sid looked around at his parents and the Mehras, reminiscing about old times, he felt like a little boy again. He looked down at Katrina who was leaning against him teasing Sue and Raj about their honeymoon.
"Do you remember Sue? Sid used to always tease you, that when you get married we will come with you on your honeymoon ae well. So I hope you've booked an adjoining room for us,' laughed Katrina, her soft voice and words bringing a smile to Sids face.
As the four of them began to laugh, Sid suddenly felt a soft breeze and a coldness enveloping him. He felt as if a part of him was being torn away from him, as if something was leaving his heart. And even before he turned around he knew she was taking a step back.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Even before she had finished putting her heel on the ground, Sid had turned and captured her eyes with his own. Holding them in a tight lock, he walked firmly towards her and as he reached her side, he held her hand and entwined his fingers tightly through her own. As their friends and guests looked on, Sid brought up Ridhimmas hand to his lips and kissed it softly whilst he continuously gazing into her eyes not letting them fall away from him for a second.
'I'm sorry,' whispered Sid tenderly.
Ridhimma looked at her husband with tears in her eyes, with her heart overflowing, wondering if she could ever love her husband more then she did at that moment.
Sid took Ridhimma by the hand and led her towards his family and the Mehras. As they approached them, Ridhimma suddenly began to feel very nervous. As if sensing what she was going through, Sid squeezed her hand reassuringly and gave her a quick smile.
'Uncle, auntie. Meet my beautiful wife,' said Sid introducing her proudly. As the Mehras finished embracing Ridhimma, he turned her towards Katrina.
'Katrina, this is Ridhimma,' he said simply.
As Ridhimma looked on at the gorgeous woman in front of her, she held her breath. Close up she was even more breathtaking with the most dazzling smile she had seen.
'Your right Siddy,' Katrina said in her soft, lilting voice,'she is indeed beautiful,' and saying that, she gathered Ridhimma in a warm hug.
Not only was Katrina stunning but she was charming too. As Katrina began to chat with Sid and her, Ridhimma felt on edge and worried. The fact that Katrina called him 'Siddy' so effortlessly, made her uneasy. Despite Sid's reassurance and Katrina being so sweet, she just couldn't get rid of the feeling of inadequacy that had descended upon her.
'Sid, I think I should check on the guests. Excuse me,' and with that she escaped before anyone could notice her anxiousness.
As she headed out of the dance hall, she gave a quick glance back just in time to see a smiling Sid lead a giggling Katrina onto the dance floor. As the tears began to gather in her eyes, Ridhimma rushed out of the room, her heart filled with the terrifying thought that she was about to lose her husband.
-----------------------------------------------------------
As the party finally drew to a close and the music began to wind down, the tired guests began to drive home. Everyone went outside to see off Raj and his family.
'So Raj, we'll see you the day after tomorrow at the wedding,' said Sid,' and don't even think about getting cold feet cos Abhi bhaiyya is just looking for the chance to show off his boxing skills.'
As everyone laughed, Sue and Raj looked at each other wide eyed.
'Er… uncle , auntie…..I was wondering…is it ok….?' As Raj's words trailed off he looked desperately at Sue for help.
'Mum, Dad, actually…umm….Raj and I were wondering….I mean the weddings the day after tomorrow and so is it okay if Raj spends the day with us tomorrow?'
As she saw her parents horrified face about to turn down her request, Katrina came to their rescue.
'Uncle. Auntie this is not fair. I leave again for New York straight after the wedding and I wanted to spend all my time getting to know Raj and Ridhimma so you cant say no. Please'
'But beta, this is not done. Raj and Sue can't meet the day before the wedding. And besides I'm sure his parents will need him for various rasams tomorrow,' argued Mrs. modi.
The whole gang began to plead with both sets of parents to allow Raj to come over the next day. Finally realizing that the kids would not take no for an answer, the parents finally relented to excited thanks from their children.
As Raj and his family drove off, the older inhabitants of the guest house all trundled off to their respective rooms to catch a much needed sleep, leaving the kids behind. As Sid turned round to talk to Ridhimma he frowned to himself when he suddenly became aware of the fact that she was not there with the gang. He realized that the last time he had seen her was hours ago when she had told him she was going to check on the guests. He had got so engrossed with chatting and dancing with Katrina that he hadn't even noticed she was missing.
'Anything wrong Siddy?' asked Katrina.
'I was just wondering where Ridhimma was,' said Sid looking concerned.
'Oh Sid, I completely forgot to tell you. I saw Ridhimma earlier on and she said she was going to lie down in the room cos she had a bit of headache,' said Nikki. 'And before you start on about why I didn't tell you earlier, it's because Ridhimma asked me not to disturb you,' explained Nikki quickly as she saw Sid about to reproach her for not telling him.
'I'd better go and see if she's okay,'said Sid walking off.
'Wait Sid I'll come with you,' said Katrina falling in step with Sid.
As Sid and Katrina walked off, Yuvi slid upto Abhi.
'How about some alone time with our wives,' suggested Yuvi with a wink.
'Perfect!' said Abhi grabbing his wife's hand and heading off in one direction while Yuvi guided Naina in another.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Ridhmma felt miserable. She had been lying down on the bed in her room, with the lights dimmed still fully clothed, for the last 2 hours. She could hear the noises of people chattering and car doors banging as the guests left, floating through the open window. But her thoughts were elsewhere. She couldn't keep the image of Katrina hugging Sid out of her mind. They seemed so comfortable together, as if they belonged.
'What if Sid realizes he's made a mistake now that he's seen Katrina again? What if he realizes he still loves her? What if he regrets marrying me'
As the questions kept bombarding around in her head, the tears trickled down her cheeks soaking her pillow.
"I wish she would just go away,' sobbed Ridhimma petulantly like a small child.
It wasn't fair. Just when everything was perfect between her and Sid. Just the 2 of them….no one else.
Just then she sat up abruptly.
'Oh my gosh! Is this how I made Sid feel all the time Armaan was around? Was he going through as much pain as me?'
And as the horrifying thought dawned on her, Ridhimma covered her face in shame with her hands. What she must have put Sid through all those months when Armaan had come back, when she was so confused. Katrina had been in their lives only a few hours and she felt like her heart was being cut in two. And Sid had put up with her erratic, confusing behaviour for months without complaint.
And Katrina was just a friend. She wasn't even like Armaan who had been trying to take her away from Sid. Ridhimma suddenly felt very ashamed and embarrassed with the way she had behaved tonight. She was determined to put everything right, especially with Katrina. But first she had to see Sid. Just to hold him in her arms and apologize again for everything she had put him through when Armaan had been around.
Just as she was about to get down off the bed, she heard a knock on the door.
'Sid!'
With a smile she ran to the door just as it opened and stopped dead in her tracks as Sid walked in followed by Katrina.
'Ridhimma are you okay?' asked a concerned Sid holding her by her arms.
'I….Im okay,' stammered Ridhimma momentarily disarmed by the sight of Katrina with her husband, 'it's ….it's just a slight headache.'
'Shall I get you something for it? Katrina asked gently.
Even though she was being kind, her question annoyed Ridhimma.
'No, I'm fine thanks,' said Ridhimma a little harshly.
Sid looked at her in surprise at the slightly irritated tone.
'I think you should go to sleep Ridhimma,' he said, putting his arm around her and walking her back to the bed and making her lie down, 'you're probably just tired from the heat and all the running around.'
As he spoke to her, Sid gently covered her with a blanket and stroked her hair.
'I'll see you tomorrow,' he said with a smile and headed out towards the door. 'Shall we go Katrina.'
Sid waited by the door expectantly, while Katrina looked at Ridhimma and gave her a sympathetic smile.
'I hope you feel better,' she said sweetly and turned back towards her friend. ' Sid, please take me to the famous gazebo that you and Sue always used to talk about. I'd really like to see it,' she said to Sid as she began walking towards him.
"You'll love it!' said Sid, 'In fact do you remember………'
As Sid and Katrina closed the door behind them, Ridhimmas fists slowly curved into a tight ball.
'How dare she! How dare she just walk off with my husband! And Sid! Sid just left me here and took HER to the gazebo…..our gazebo!'
Ridhimma fumed as jealousy raged inside her and angry tears began to trickle down. This could not be happening. She sat up angrily on the bed , as the turmoil inside her began to bubble to the surface. She would not let this happen. Sid was hers and she would not let anyone take him away from her.
'Okay Katrina, you have a fight on your hands!' thought Ridhimma determinedly wiping her tears, as she worked out a plan of action to keep her husband close by her.
