Chapter 71: Two Incidents
He walked out of the room, feeling sick with guilt and grief; he didn't know which one was stronger or worse. He didn't understand why she had to cry and make it worse. Why was she crying anyways? She got what she wanted. He chose to ignore the little part of his brain that was trying to tell him that Gauri never cried and that the girl wouldn't know how to be act out an emotion that she didn't feel if someone paid her. He also ignored the part of him that told him to go back and talk to her. He had never been one to wallow in misery before, but for some reason, the idea that had climbed into his brain – that she wanted Shashank back – just wouldn't leave him. Even though there was a part of him that was trying to tell him that there might be another reason behind why Gauri made Thalia drink the lust potion – like maybe to test him, which under the circumstances would be a much more bearable option that the one that had lodged itself in his brain – he also couldn't bear to not be prepared for the worst. He didn't know at what point being prepared for the worst also became believing the worst. But that's exactly what happened. In all his vulnerability over how she made him feel, it was easy to believe that she had and always will be his Achilles heel; it was only a matter of time before she realized it and used it against him.
She didn't come after him, but he knew she wouldn't. She never had. There was nothing to say anymore anyways. As he had said to Thalia earlier, Gauri will get what she wants. But he wanted her to ask for it. If she wanted a divorce, it was not just enough to establish him an adulterer. She was going to have to ask for it. Until then, he would stay in this marriage and make her as miserable as possible while she prepared to go back to her saccharine-coated, spineless, coward of an ex!

He didn't see her again that day. When he came back from the office that night, it was late, and his mother was waiting up for him with dinner. Before he could ask, she volunteered that Gauri had been in bed all day pleading a migraine. She asked him whether they should take her to the doctor. He shrugged. He didn't know what else to say.
He waited until his mother went up to bed before he climbed the stairs tiredly to his room. He was tempted to stop by her room and check in on her, but he decided against it. Even at this juncture, knowing what he knew about her, he was being a sappy moron, playing right into her sway over him. He fell into a dreamless sleep after a few hours of tossing and turning.

The days that followed were excruciating. This wasn't like their previous fights. There was a coldness now in their dealings with each other that was more genuine than ever before. She didn't go out of her way to avoid him, but she didn't need to, because he made sure that he avoided her as much as possible. She didn't particularly seem angry or hurt or any of those things. She seemed somewhat indifferent, although there were occasionally times when he wondered if it was indifference or something else… Like the time when she reached for a pot on the stove with her bare hands and accidentally burned herself or when she had almost sliced her hand open with a knife when she kept on cutting a carrot that had already seen the last of the knife. Gauri was the last person that he would have expected to be absent-minded, but that's what she had become… absent-minded. Like her mind was perpetually somewhere else than where she was. They were rarely in the same room together aside from dinner and even then she kept herself so busy helping his mother than it was hard to notice that they weren't talking to each other. His mother had noticed of course… initially she had let it alone thinking that it was just like their fights every other time. But when two weeks became three and the trend continued, she pulled him aside one night after dinner to talk.
"What's going on between you two?" she asked without preamble. Gauri had pleaded a headache again and had not come down for dinner. The rest of them had finished dinner and his father had already gone upstairs.
"What do you mean? Nothing is going on." He said as he prayed that she would leave it there.
But of course, this was his mother. She wouldn't leave anything be.
"What is going on Shiv? I thought you both were finally getting along well. More than well, in fact."
"A marriage goes through its ups and downs, mother. You know that." He said. This will likely be the last down they had, but he didn't add that out loud.
"Yes, but you have been married for only six months."
"We have known each other for 28 years and did not get along for 23 of those. Whose fault is it for thinking that we will make a good married couple? So, don't blame me."
For some strange reason, his mother didn't push him further and that was that.
When their silent treatment entered its fourth week, something happened. Well, two things happened simultaneously.
His brother, Rathan, came back from the US. And he brought back his fiance with him to get married in Delhi.
The day they came back, Gauri didn't show up for dinner again. This time he got pissed. It's one thing to cry off occasionally because she didn't want to see him; it was another entirely to disrespect his brother and fiance by avoiding dinner the day they arrived.
He gave a smile that he didn't particularly feel to his family before he climbed the stairs to the bedroom that he hadn't been in in more than 3 week. He knocked on the door a few times and when he didn't get an answer, he tried the handle. The door was locked. He banged on it then, feeling a rage stronger than what he had felt towards her that day when he had found out that she had given the aphrodisiac to Thalia. His mother must have heard the racket that he was making because she rushed up the stairs towards him.
"What is wrong with you, Shiv? She is not feeling well."
"Bullshit! Excuse my language, but she is fine." He turned back towards the door and banged again. "Gauri, open this door before I break it down!"
"Shiv, keep it down!" His mother admonished him before gently knocking on the door.
"Gauri, beti, are you ok?"
The door opened half-way a few moments later and he pushed it open fully, flicking the light on where it was dark inside.
"Shiv, stop being rude!" his mother shot him a dark look before she walked inside and turned to Gauri.
"Oh Lord… What's wrong Gauri?" he heard his mother's distressed voice and turned around.
His heart skipped a beat when he saw her pale pallor; she looked like she would pass out any second.
"I am fine. Just a little under the weather. I think it's just food poisoning. Something I had at the university cafe, I think."
His mother placed the back of her hand on Gauri's forehead just as he walked closer to them. Gauri looked up at him then and it was the first time in a while that they did not avoid each other's gaze. He wanted to hurt her badly for being so stubborn. For having no softness or affection where he was concerned. But above all, he wanted to hurt himself for hoping that she wouldn't ask him for a divorce now that all these weeks had passed. He was rapidly joining the ranks of senseless and gullible lovesick idiots who would allow a woman this much power over their life.
He couldn't read what was in her eyes, but it didn't last long anyways. Because as he watched, her eyes drifted shut and her body swayed. He reached her just in time as she fainted.
Within the hour, they had a doctor in the house who made the pronouncement loudly in front of his whole family. He was going to be a father.
