Chapter 72: Two Reactions

His mother gave a loud hoot as she ran up the stairs to Gauri's room and his brother and father came over to hug him in turn. His somewhat shy future-bhabhi, Senna, came and congratulated him, although she hadn't seen Gauri yet. His father and brother were both talking to him, each in turn yet again, but he couldn't hear anything. He didn't realize his eyes were watery until he felt wetness on his cheek and then he was suddenly embarrassed and pretended to have something in his eye as he rushed off to the bathroom in the hallway behind the kitchen. Once he was in, he locked the door behind him and stood against the door, rubbing his eyes viciously to clear any remnants of the moisture that had arrived as a rude guest.

He washed his face and looked at himself in the mirror. He couldn't really see his reflection as much as her face right before she had fainted. Once he dried his face, he walked out into the hallway and saw that father was talking with Senna while Rathan stood behind her beaming. He couldn't help the smile that lit his face then; he was glad that Rathan was finally getting his wish that he had waited five years for. At least some couples found happiness. When they heard him, his father looked up.

"Shiv, I was just telling Rathan that because his room has been a make-shift storage since he has been gone and you and Gauri now have what used to be the guest bedroom, maybe they can use your room until we get his room cleared out? Would that be okay?"

"Sure." He said automatically. His parents didn't know that he had been sleeping in his room for a few weeks now. He would just move back to Gauri's room, well technically, it was their joint room. If she made a fuss, he would deal with it then. Well, he wouldn't let her fuss. The woman would probably puke her guts out and pass out again before she ever asked anyone for help. He wondered how long she has been having the morning sickness –evening sickness too apparently – without letting anyone know. This was his baby. He would just have to exercise his paternal rights and tell her that for the unborn baby's protection, someone needed to be in the room in case she ever needed anything. And she looked like she has lost weight. He was sure that was not good for a pregnant woman. Although with all the vomiting, how could she keep anything down? He would have to check with his mother. He mind was filled with such rambling thoughts as he walked up to his room to grab his stuff out so as to make more space for Rathan and Senna.

***

She wanted to cry. Shiv's mother hadn't left her side since she found out the news of the pregnancy. Shiv's father had come in to hug her and give her his congratulations and blessings. As had Rathan and even the new bhabhi-to-be, Senna. The only person conspicuously absent was the father of the baby that she was carrying… how could he hate her so much that he wouldn't even come in to see how she was doing… maybe… maybe he wasn't happy, maybe he didn't want to be a father… Okay, now she did cry.

"Gauri, what's wrong?" Smith aunty asked as she rushed over to her side from across the room where she had been getting another blanket.

She shook her head, but her tears wouldn't stop and Smitha aunty spread her arms out and Gauri moved over until she was holding onto her and crying against her chest.

"What's wrong beta? It's okay. You're okay. Arent' you happy?"

She managed to nod her head through her tears and Smitha aunty smiled.

"Are you crying because you're happy?" she asked now.

That was a good enough reason as any and Gauri nodded her head again.

"I always knew Shiv would be the first one to give me a grandchild, even with all his wild ways. I had only hoped that you would be the mother of his child."

Gauri cried harder now and Smitha aunty stroked her hair. "There, there…it's alright. It's the pregnancy hormones making you weepy.."

"What's wrong?" She heard his voice from the doorway and dug her head deeper into Smitha aunty's bosom.

Shiv's mother held her tighter, but turned around just the same and Gauri could now see Shiv standing in the doorway with an armload of things.

"What's all that?" Smitha aunty asked.

"I am moving out more of my stuff here so that Rathan and Senna can take my room."

"Oh." was all Smitha aunty said.

Gauri, however, felt a surge of relief so strong that she hugged Smitha aunty even tighter.

"Let me bring you some soup. Would you be able to keep it down?" Smitha aunty looked down at her to ask.

She nodded but when Smitha aunty attempted to move out of her hold, Gauri kept holding tightly, watching Shiv out of the corner of her eye.

Smitha aunty was a divine woman because she stayed there in Gauri's hold until Gauri let go finally once Shiv walked out of the room to get more of his stuff.

By the time he came back into the room with yet more things, Smitha aunty was back with soup.
