Part 6: Lost in the Desert (But Not Really)
"Mr. Singhania?" Arjun's head bobbed up from where it rested between his hands, searching for the nurse whose voice had interrupted his inner misery.
"Yes?"
"There are a couple formalities that need to be finished, but these forms must be signed by a relative."
Arjun growled in rejection as he seemed to pounce up, "Their lives are on the line, and you want me to wait until relatives show up?!" He threateningly approached the nurse, who cowered back as the imposing young man angrily swiped the clipboard from her trembling hands.
"I will sign these damn forms." Arjun stated, "And you, will accept them." Glaring at her again, Arjun scribbled his name on the stack of forms so big the clip could barely hold it all. Finished, he shoved the board toward the frightened young nurse, "here."
The nurse was frozen to her spot, staring at the forms in her hands; Arjun was in no mood for this.
"GO!" He roared.
The nurse's eyes widened, without a second glance towards him, she twirled on her heel and within seconds had disappeared back to where she came from.
Arjun let out a deep breath as he sunk back onto a bench, it unwittingly came out as a sob. So much had gone wrong in the past few hours, so much. He felt as if the weight of the world was crushing down on him, and he was slowly losing all control. For the first time in a long time, Arjun Singhania was lost.
=ll=
"We're lost."
"No, we're not."
"Dude, he's right, we're lost. This was a fail."
"Dude. We are not lost. It's just, taking longer than expected."
"Sid," Arjun gritted his teeth in an effort to control his rage, "You.Got.Us.Lost. We've been driving around in circles for hours."
"No.I.Did.Not." Sid replied, "the roads just curvy."
Shravan lay a hand on Arjun's shoulder, "let me handle this." Shravan walked over to Sid, throwing an arm over his shoulder, he walked him a little away from where the group had pulled the three vehicles to the side of the road. He pointed to a bright blue billboard a ways off, "we have passed that same billboard four times," he stated matter of factly; before Sid could say anything Shravan turned him around to face the distance, "that herd of cows? They have moved maybe a kilometer since we saw them the first time."
Sid squinted as he peered at the sign again; his mouth fell open as he realized Arjun had been right, his GPS had gotten them lost.
"WHAT?!?" he exploded, "what on earth! We're supposed to be NH 17!"
Shravan smiled, "yeah, buddy, we know. That's what Arjun was telling you."
"And for all we know we're headed the opposite way."
"For all we know, we've been driving in circles for hours."
Sid frowned, grumbling as he scuffled back towards where Arjun was waiting with the girls. He had calmed down and now lounged with an arm resting on Arohi's legs as they swung on the side of his jeep.
The friends stared at each other for a few minutes, disinherited by the day's events. Rhiddima finally broke the silence; pulling herself up to sit on the ledge of Sid's car window she asked the question on everyone's mind, "What now?"
The group exchanged looks again, "do you want to go back the way we came?" Sid offered.
"Do you know how?" Arjun demanded with an amused glance.
Sid glared at him, "Do you?" he asked.
Arjun shrugged, "I never said I did."
Shravan raised his hands, "calm down guys. Ok, look let's all just admit we're useless when it comes to these roads seeing as to we've all just lived here for about three years."
Sid and Arjun nodded in agreement, their male egos had enough bruises for the day. The girls simply rolled their eyes at their blame game.
Saachi stood up from where she perched on the trunk of Sid's car, "ok look. A while back we passed that small town right?"
"The one with the pretty houses?" Rhiddima inquired with a spark in her eyes.
"Yup, those. How about we head back there. We'll get a map or something."
Arohi jumped out of the jeep, "yes! That's a plan. Let's head back and find someone that can actually read a map!"
The guys looked at each other. As much as they hated to admit it, the girls had the best plan, plus a town meant hotels. Which meant food. And they were hungry! Nodding, they all moved towards their respective vehicles.
=ll=
"Wow!" Rhiddima stared in wonder as they passed the majestic houses lining the road leading to the small town. Sid glanced over, smiling lovingly at her childlike fascination for everything. She herself had grown up in a house bigger than this, and yet here she was marveling at the bungalows that lined the narrow two lane road into the heart of town.
"Do you like them?" Sid asked her.
She turned to him with a bright smile, "one day," she said, "we're gonna have a house just like that."
Sid's smile widened in loving mischief, "one day," he told her. Reaching over Siddhant grabbed Rhiddima's hand, clasping it to his chest as he followed the receding dust clouds from Shravan's bike, which led the way.
=ll=
"He says he doesn't know." Sid groaned as he sunk into the chair beside Rhiddima, who gave him a sympathetic look.
Leaning over she lay a sweet kiss on his cheek, "it's ok. We'll find a way."
He reached over to brush away a stray lock of hair. Something about her glowing face always made his day better. The two lovebirds smiled as they prepared to get lost in each other's eyes.
"If you two are done, can we get back to this?" Shravan's voice interrupted their momentary respite, bringing them down to earth.
Sid nodded, "Yes, of course."
The group began discussing their options as waiters approached, serving them their fresh cooked local taalis. They had decided to grab lunch while they were here, stopping at a small roadside outside seating restaurant.
Even after eating, the group was lost. Arjun was fed up with Arohi's constant chatter, Shravan just wanted to curl up somewhere with Saachi, and Sid wanted to figure the problem out.
Rhiddima got up, "I have to go to the bathroom," she announced, almost immediately, Saachi and Arohi jumped up, ready to go too. Upon inquiring, however, they were informed the restrooms were behind the building and they turned to the guys with wide eyes. The guys exchanged looks, finally Arjun pulled himself up, "come on," he said rolling his eyes. The giggling girls followed as Arjun led them away.
=ll=
Arjun leaned against the wall playing with his phone as he waited for the girls to finish. He had just finished the tenth level of Angry Birds when he felt an odd sensation of being watched. He paused as the hair at the back of his neck seemed to stand up, looking up he scanned the surroundings.
The bathrooms were located not only behind the restaurant but slightly away from it too. It lay alongside a small dirt road which emerged from some densely populated woods. Now that he thought about it, Arjun decided he should be more alert. Anyone could easily be watching them from within the dark foliage.
Arjun tensed as he saw a leafy bush to the side of the pathway stir; putting his phone away he began to slowly approach it. He had barely taken two steps, however, when Shravan emerged from around the corner.
"Arjun! Dude! Are you done?"
Arjun swiveled his head to address his friend, but he turned back immediately as he saw another movement from within the woods. Then, it was all silent; brushing away the notion, he pivoted back to Shravan.
"Did you figure out the way?"
Shravan walked up beside him, "no. The guy says that some doctor will show up soon. Supposedly he knows his way around and will be able to tell us what to do."
"Oh, ok. That's good I guess."
"Yeah, are the girls done?"
"We are!" Saachi and Arohi emerged from the bathrooms sans Rhiddima.
"Rhiddima's still inside though," Arohi said, stating the obvious, "she'll be out soon."
"Ok," Shravan said, "I'm gonna head back then."
"We'll come too!" Saachi yelled to him, "Arjun, wait for Rhiddi ok?"
Arjun nodded in agreement, settling back against the wall as Shravan led Arohi and Saachi away.
"Rhiddima!" He called in, "hurry up!"
Seconds after they disappeared around the corner, Rhiddima emerged from the small shanty, a grin on her face.
"Finally!" Arjun exclaimed, "thank god, bhabi, it only took you a day."
Rhiddima smiled sweetly at Arjun, "Arjun," she said, "tum mujhe apne bhabi manti hoon na?"
Arjun's face fell as he looked down at her; she had mischief brewing in those beautiful hazel brown eyes of hers.

Sid sat alone at their table with what can only be termed as a puppy dog face. He stabbed at his bowl of halwa, now unrecognizable as anything edible after he had massacred it with his spoon. Why on earth were they not flying to Goa like normal people?
He raised his head as he heard someone greet someone they simply called, 'doctor.' Figuring this must be whom they had been waiting for, he got up and headed towards the tall and dignified man who was entering the building. He wore a red button up shirt with dark wash jeans; glasses were perched on his face, making him appear mature and sophisticated. Despite the dressing, however, Sid could make out that the man wasn't much older than him, eight years at the most.
The man paused briefly to greet some restaurant workers before making his way towards a table and seating himself. He promptly brought out an I-phone, to which he gave his full concentration, not noticing the distraught young man until Sid was standing right before him and clearing his throat.
"Help."
Sid cringed at how pitiful he had just sounded, "I mean. Sorry, I was wondering if you could help my friends and me."
The man set down his phone, raising his eyes slowly to look Siddhant up and down. "How exactly am I supposed to help you," he asked.
Sid held out his hand, reluctantly, the man joined hands with him, "I'm Siddhant, Siddhant Modi. Actually, my friends and I wanted to go to Goa. And then we decided to make it a road trip, after which we realized that no one knew the way. See, I'm from Delhi, Shravan's from Manali, and Arjun's from Chandigarh, and the girls just refused to help." Siddhant paused in his life story as he saw the man begin to frown and he leaned back in his seat; he was obviously not interested in the details. "Basically, my GPS screwed up, and now we're lost. And we need to get to Goa."
The man raised an eyebrow; seemingly resisting the need to roll his eyes, he sat up and motioned for Sid to sit down. Pulling up his phone again, he clicked around until he got a map or the area. As he began explaining how to get back onto a main road, Sid cursed himself for not thinking about using his own Blackberry which rested in his pocket.
