Part 8: Our Song is the Love in Your Eyes, and When We Dance, Baby, It's on Full Blast
He still remembered that day. The annual fresher's day bash at Delhi University School of Business. Like every year since the day he had arrived, Shravan and he had decided to go stag. There would be plenty of single ladies around- why restrict themselves?
He had never believed in love, never thought he ever would. His life-his parents- had served him only to veer away from any hints at that ridiculous concept. But that day, that moment, that instant. The second he set eyes on her, he had known right then and there that life was about to change.
He hadn't known who she was, had never met her before. He had only seen her across the dance floor, dressed in a simple aqua blue floor length gown, adorned only with her bracelet, chain, and earrings; she had been beauty in simplicity. In the back of his mind had flickered the silly notion that they were meant to be, because the color of their clothes- he had worn an aqua colored shit underneath a black blazer- had matched.
But, yes, he remembered when he had spotted her, and his breath had caught. As he made his way across the floor, he had felt nervous for the first time since he was a fifteen year old teenager. He had felt slightly relieved to find that she was talking to someone he knew, Prithvi from his economics class. The moments after walking up to her had always been a blur. He could never quite remember what they had conversed about; the only thing he remembered next was that they were on the dance floor.
She had fit into his arms like they were two pieces of a puzzle-perfectly. As they begun swaying to slow beats he remembered not being able to keep his gaze away from her. And each time their eyes met, he had seen her blush deepen. It was then he knew that it was love, and that she felt it too.
That moment, that time, that song. It would forever be ingrained in his mind. He had heard that song so many times before that day, but it never made an impact, it had never seemed very special. That night, it had turned into one of his most favorite songs.

Tere bina ye jeevan jaise suna sapna
Tere bina tujhko har pal dhoondhe ye dil mera
Maana maana maine pyaar hai, kaisa chaya dekho mujhpe khumaar hai
Mere sang zameen aur aasman, phir kyun khoyi meri har disha
Tere bina, tere bina har pal lagey suna sa
Ik tujhse hi ban ta mera jahaan pyaara pyaara
Har zarre mein, har jagah mein mehsoos karti hoon main
Ik tujhko hi haan tujhko hi mehfuz rakhti hoon main
Khayalon mein, dil mein, meri saanson mein

He couldn't believe how easily they had fallen into each other's lives. She had returned home to Mumbai soon after, but they had kept in touch. Evading Shravan's playful remarks and teasing he had spent over an hour a day talking to her on the phone or Skyping. It wasn't long, however, before he had reached Mumbai after her.
The affluent and caring Mr. Modi wasn't one to pass up a chance to make his son happy. Junior Mr. Modi was soon the MD of a new branch of Modi Enterprises, owner of an awesome flat, roommate to his best friend and associate Shravan, and of course, loving full time secret boyfriend to Rhiddima Gupta.
He remembered the day their father's had found out about them. Or well, they found out that the fathers had known all along. Her surprise birthday party had set the stage for a huge revelation:
Sid and Shravan walked in together, Sid nervously adjusting his hair and shirt as his eyes searched the room. They had been invited as mere acquaintances through the clever cunning of Rhiddima's friend Saachi. Now that he was here, however, he felt ready to bolt out the wooden and glass doors that led into the grand Gupta house. As he took deep breaths, he felt a reassuring hand land on his shoulder. He looked towards Shravan, who smiled at him confidently, winking to show his support. Rolling his shoulders, Siddhant looked out at the crowd filling the hall, he had to find the elusive Mr. Gupta, and make sure he made a great first impression. It was, after all, the question of the rest of his life.
"Siddhant Modi?"
Sid and Shravan turned at the sound of a female voice from behind them. They found a petite woman around their age staring expectantly at them, "yes," Sid replied, "hi."
She smiled brightly, "HI JEEJU!" she leaped at as surprised Sid who shot a bemused Shravan a look of panic, jeeju?
"I'm Arohi!" the girl said pulling back, "and it's my job that you find Shashank Uncle and make a great impression!"
Sid smiled brightly down at her, he liked this girl already!
"Aru?"
Sid froze as a strong male voice called out to her from behind him. Arohi looked around Sid to spot the source of the voice, pulling back, she gave him a pat on the shoulder, winking at him she walked past, "Uncle!" she exclaimed, "hi!"
Sid could feel the jitters setting in again, his face paling as he realized that his hopefully future father in law stood behind him. Sid felt Shravan's hand on his back again, swallowing forcefully, he turned around with what he hoped was a reassuring, kind, and nice guy, perfect for your daughter kind of smile. The smile disappeared as Shashank gave him a once over, gave Arohi a hug, said something to her' and walked away.
Sid stared after him, shocked, that was absolutely not the way that should have gone! He contemplated chasing after him, but was sidetracked to hear Shravan fighting laughter along with Arohi. He gave them a hurt look before stalking off, his heart just broke, some friend he was'
"Sid." He turned away, ignoring a smiling Shravan, "dude, listen. He'll come around. He doesn't even know you, you're a stranger. He'll love you. Really. You're Siddhant Modi remember, father's favorite?" Sid cracked a smile at the jest, a remembrance of their college days. He nodded, determined once again. He walked towards the stairs, where Shashank stood laughing with some guests. It was then that the lights dimmed, and Saachi scurried in, "SHE'S COMING!" she whisper screamed.
The hall felt dead silent as the spotlight focused on the door.
"Saachi why are we stopping at my hou-" Rhiddima's voice faltered as she saw the dark hall and spotlight on her.
"SURPRISE!"
At first fright flitted across her face, her nerves shaken by the sudden noise, as she finally took in the hall, however, surprise and excitement lit up her face. She beamed as her father emerged from the crowd, offering her a hug. She dove into his arms, always daddy's little girl. Rhiddima scanned the crowd, her sight landing on a vision that took her breath away; there he stood, nervous and fretting beside a calm and collected Shravan, she smiled at his over her father's shoulder. He seemed to stand up taller, fierce determination overcoming his stance. He began approaching the two.
Shashank pulled back, addressing the crowd to state that today, along with being his little girl's birthday, was a happy day because he finally got to meet his best friend after decades. His best friend made his way through the crowd, Shashank grinned as the man enveloped him in a hug. Rhiddima was introduced and promptly enclosed in a fatherly hug; it was after those introductions that the elderly duo made their shocking announcement.
"We've been friends for years, too many to count," Shashank stated, "but that's going to change."
Rhiddima's face paled as she realized where this was heading. The newly introduced uncle had a mischievous glint in his eyes as he spoke, "from now on, we are on the way to becoming family. Rhiddima is going to be my new daughter. Welcome to my family Rhiddima beta," he said fondly. The two fathers smiled down at a stunned Rhiddima. She'd always thought that her father would let her choose her own husband; this was so sudden, so shocking. She didn't know how to react.
Fortunately, or unfortunately, before she had to someone else did.
Sid stood in front of the three of them, his face as shocked as hers, disbelief written across his face, but what he said next managed to daze his precious Rhiddima even more, "DAD?!"
*More to come! yay! *dance dance*
