Chapter 5-(ii)
Of Bosses And Babies
Adhiraj put down his little girl carefully into the crib, as he heard the door bell ring. Must be Dia, he thought as he called out to his wife to take charge of the baby before walking out towards the door. Dia had called a while ago to inform about Mayank's return and had said she would be visiting them today after office. Adhiraj groaned inwardly at the thought of all the pending work that was awaiting him in the office tomorrow. He had almost forgotten he worked at Marvel, amidst all the joy and celebrations that came with the baby. Dia's call came as a return to the reality that he was supposed to join back at work tomorrow, back to the busy schedule which was an added bonus of being an HR manager to one of the biggest construction firms in the country. Not that he disliked work; he loved it as a matter of fact. But being a new father, he had gotten quite used to tending to his darling little angel over the past few days and a sudden departure from this routine was something he didn't quite look forward to. But then, he couldn't just remain at home fussing over his wife and daughter forever. Work was important too, especially now that the family has got an addition, he thought in an attempt to convince his heart as he opened the door to welcome his colleague to his little paradise.
Dia stood at the door as Adhiraj had expected, with a small wrapped package in her hand and her charming usual smile on her pleasant face.
"Congratulations Adhiraj. Here's a gift from the boss. He sent me to congratulate you on his behalf." Dia said in a sing-song voice as she entered the house behind him.
"Oh, so that's why you came, Dia? And here I was thinking you came because you missed me in the office. " Adhiraj said, with mock hurt, spreading his right hand on his chest.
"Yeah right. I missed you so much in the office Adhiraj, even more than I missed Mayank sir. Honestly." Dia said lightly slapping his hand. "Now shut up and take me to your wife and baby. I came to see them not you."
"Okay, madam. Come along then. So how's Mayank like after the trip? Did the hill station have any effect on his mood?" enquired Adhiraj as he led his friend to his room.
"Well, he did look furious today initially, but he was surprisingly understanding about your absence though. And he sent this gift for the baby too. He could be really sweet sometimes."
"Yeah, that's right. Behind the tough exterior he shows around, he has a heart of pure gold. But I wish life would be a bit fairer to him. Poor guy has been so lonely after his dad's death, and then his brother went missing. I wonder what went wrong with Samrat." Adhiraj said with a sigh as he entered the room with Dia. Suhani was there desperately trying to get their daughter to sleep, while the baby seemed to have no such intentions as of now and gave a cry of delight at the sight of her father entering the room.
"Oh fine then, go to your father. Adhiraj, you have spoiled her a lot. She doesn't even want to be with me anymore." Suhani complained to her husband before she noticed the guest and added, "Oh hey Dia, so nice to meet you. We were expecting you. Sit down. I'll get you some tea."
"Oh no Suhani, don't bother. I have to leave really soon. I just came to congratulate you guys and of course to see our little princess." Said Dia as she reached out to take the baby from Suhani. "She is so cute. Looks like you, Suhani. But she has got Adhiraj's eyes I think. "
"Yes, everyone says that. And I'm not hearing anything of your need-to-go stuff. You came only now, and you are staying for dinner. That's final. I'm going to get tea for you, make yourselves comfortable." Suhani ordered as she went out to the kitchen leaving the two colleagues to talk.
"So, you are joining back tomorrow, right Adhiraj? Well lots of work waiting for you. I did tell you on the phone, didn't I?" asked Dia as she carefully settled the baby in the crib and gently cradled her.
"Yeah, recruitment for junior engineers. I know. I had started the process before I went on leave. Now I just have to schedule the dates for the interview and inform the shortlisted candidates. Though that itself is going to be a humungous task considering the sheer number of applicants." Adhiraj answered with a sigh as he turned his attention to his daughter in the crib. The baby was starting to fall asleep, thanks to the gentle cradling by Dia. "I don't feel like going back to the office at all. Wish I could just sit at home tending to my beautiful little daughter. I am just so happy to have her." He added as he fondly ran his fingers over the baby's head.
"Well, you do have a beautiful daughter Adhiraj," whispered Dia as she looked out of the window, a distant look taking over her eyes.
"And you are very lucky. Very very lucky indeed."
