CHAPTER 6
Geet smiled at her group of girls she had been teaching for the past year and her smile turned brighter, imagining dancing in front of an audience and not only that, but for her friend Pari as well! "Right girls, you know the routine we practised during our classes for the song?" All her students nodded their heads in agreement, "That's what we'll be doing since Pari, the bride requested that I'd dance to, so you don't mind?" Geet asked slightly worried as she knew her dance group was excited about this performance they were asked to do. Her students shook their heads and giggled before finishing off their make and straightening their costumes, while Geet sighed in relief.
Geet peeked out of the door, towards the centre of the room where Pari was introducing Geet and her dance group and Geet gulped, her excitement had turned into nervousness and slight fear that it wouldn't go well as she would imagined. She jumped when she felt a hand on her shoulder and looked back to see one of her best dancers, Ayesha give her a supporting smile and whispered, "It'll be fine Geet, don't worry!" before gathering the rest of the girls to line up and enter the hall as soon as the music started. Geet took a deep breath and let it out slowly, before going to the front of the line and lowered her dupatta over her face like a bride and waited for the music.
As the background music of Saajan Ke Ghar Jaana started, Geet closed her eyes tightly beneath her dupatta because she knew every lyric by heart and what they meant to her personally, before opening her eyes and started dancing to the music as she lead the line of dancers to the centre of the hall, where all the guests were at the sides watching the girls take their places (in plain gold lengha's) and watch the main girl (Geet) in a gold and white lengha, with a nice big embroided pattern at the bottom of her skirt rising to and ending about her knees, start to rise her dupatta slowly and smile towards the crowd.
"Mehndi lagaake aayi (Haai)
Bindiya sajaake aayi (oye hoye, hoye, hoye)"
Geet danced to the gestures matching the lyrics, while Ayesha, her second dancer, came up to her and pretended to tease her before dancing away. Yet Geet was aware someone's eye were boring into her and thus she was distracted looking for those eyes, even though she couldn't see the audience because the helpers for the wedding had darkened the room for the dance, so that the only light was focused on her and her dance group.
"Mehndi lagaake aayi, bindiya sajaake aayi,
Choodi khankaake aayi, paayal chhankaake aayi,
Ho, ab geet Milan ke gaana hai (gaana hai, gaana hai)"
As Geet danced to the gestures matching the lyrics once again but in a faster pace, and twirled around to face the audience, after going towards Pari and her fiance for the last line of lyrics, she caught eyes with Dadimaa who stared at her, a blank expression on her face and then she moved away to her left and Maan stood in her position and Geet froze. Only did Shaz, another dancer of hers, managed to get Geet dancing again by nudging her slightly and giving her a What-are-you-doing? look before dancing away again to join in the chorus. Geet shook her head, smiled slightly at her fellow dancers and continued to dance.
"Mujhe Saajan ghar jaana hai,
Mujhe saajan ke ghar jaana hai,
Mujhe sajaan ke ghar jaana hai (mujhse saajan ke ghar jaana hai)"
As she danced to this, she saw Maan once again, nearer to the edge of the crowd where people had the best view of watching the group dance. He may have been in the dark, but she could never forget his height, breadth and stance of his body. Not since she kept dreaming of him every night, when she went bed to sleep and hoped that he would save her from the tricky situation she was in.
"Haan, mujhe saajan ke ghar jaana hai
Mujhe saajan ke ghar jaana hai,
Mujhe sajaan ke ghar jaana hai,"
As she twirled away from where he stood, she took a breath of relief when she turned around back to face him again only to see that he wasn't standing there. As she danced, she looked out for him because she wasn't sure whether she was hallucinating about him being there or not.
"Jamdiyaan mohe piya to paraaiyaan ho jaandiyaan,
Piya mar jaaniyaan"
She went towards Pari and her parents, dancing along with the lyrics and making Pari hug her parents, she didn't noticed Maan standing only a few metres away, behind her looking at her worryingly, because Geet had gone back into her past for a moment remembering her own fake wedding to Dev and saying goodbye to her parents. She closed her eyes briefly and opened them again when Ayesha and Shaz came and took her away back to the centre of the hall.
"Pal mein naata tod chali main, hoye
Pal mein naata tod chali main
Baabul ka ghar chhod chali main
Ab to piya ke des mein
Saara jeevan mujhe bitaana hai"
Pari hugged her father tightly while the rest of the girls danced in a circle around Geet, who stood there lost in her own thoughts of her father. The only one who had really protected her in the end to save the life of herself and that of her unborn child from the rest of her family.
"Mujhe saajan ke ghar jaana hai,
Mujhe saajan ke ghar jaana hai
Haan, mujhe saajan ke ghar jaana hai"
As she repeated the dance steps to these lyrics and twirled around a few times with one of her fellow dancers, she swore she saw Maan standing next Pari and her parents watching her. Yet when she finally stopped dancing, he wasn't there, only Pari still hugging her father.
"Oh oh oh, aah aah aah aah,
Beti Ki Taqdeer ka likha, haai
Beti ki taqdeer ka likha padhke mamta royi
Kisi ne isko janam diya aur le jaaye ise koi"
Geet couldn't even danced to these lyrics, instead she stood where she was miming the song, tears in her eyes while her fellow dancers looked at each worryingly, while trying to improvise the dance, as they usually followed Geet to the last verse. Ayesha managed to go up to her and moved close, by twirling around Geet over and over and whispering, "Geet, please dance! Remember the audience!" and Geet snapped out of her memories and danced once again, wiping her tears away secretly before they ruined her make up badly.
"Mujhe saajan ke ghar jaana hai,
Mujhe sajaan ke ghar jaana hai,
Mujhe Sajaan ke ghar jaana hai,"
As she danced to this, going round Pari and her fiance, both sets of parents and then finally the audience, weaving in and out, she smiled all the way, finally seeing Pinky and Paro standing next to a pillar, near the entrance and she winked at them before moving onto the next audience member to get them dancing and instead, it was Maan and Dadimaa.
She froze, her hands still on Maan's hands, slightly raised in the air to get him to dance and she stood there, staring into those dark, soulful eyes searching...
