Chapter Eight

Maan made sure Geet had no inkling of what he was doing.

As she boarded a taxi, he jumped into his car and started following her.

Listen, you are stalking her, he thought to himself.

Then a second thought. She is not married. How can she be married? I mean, if anything, she's supposed to be married to-

Wait, wait, what are you thinking.

He frowned as the taxi disappeared into an alleyway. Why was he taking Geet into a slum area?

God Maan, you really need to revise your employees' salaries. Poor Geet, living in such a dump.

Wait, you're not supposed to be concerned towards her.

He halted when he saw a terrified Geet being dragged out of the taxi by a couple of menacing men.

He immediately got out of the car and ran behind her as the men forcefully led her into a seedy-looking structure.

Maan's heart almost stopped for a moment. He was so stupid, letting Geet travel alone during the night when all those disgusting kidnappings and rackets were going on!!

Feeling like he could take his own life, as well as another's, he barged into the building, only to be greeted with silence and emptiness.

He heard her scream. Her voice was coming from the left. He took the route and saw her struggling to get out of the grip of the men.

With anger pulsing in his veins, he pulled the man who seemed to be the gangleader back, and aimed his fist bang on the forehead. The man fell speechless to the ground, with a concussion that would last for days and a swelling the size of Maan's bulging muscles, which were ready to kill each of those jerks-to use a polite word if you please.

Geet watched silently as Maan fought all of them, her heart twinging with an unusual pang each time Maan was injured. Finally the men ran away, muttering curses and promising to come back.

"Geet are you okay?" he asked concernedly.

She did not reply.

"I'm sorry," he said desperately, "I should have known it was unfair to let you go alone...I'm such a mean person."

Wait a minute. Was he apologizing to his secretary?

"I can't go home," she mumbled.

"Huh?" That was the only reply he seemed to think of nowadays whenever Geet made any of her incoherent ramblings.

"The neighbours," she said, "what will they say?"

Maan fell into deep thought, forming an uneasy silence between them. Finally he broke the ice. "Come to my outhouse."

"Outhouse?"

"You'll be safe there. You can leave in the morning."

"My clothes?"

"I'll send the driver to your home."

"Okay."

He helped her into the car and throughout the whole journey all she did was stare at the blood trickling down his sleeves.

"So Geet, you lied to me."

"No, it's not like that," she babbled.

"You are more concerned about what the neighbours say then the thought of your patidev. And you are willing to bring my driver to your house when your patidev himself could do so."

"Stop calling him patidev."

"Well, I would if this 'him' existed."

She sighed. "Okay fine..I lied," she said sheepishly.

"Well, your midnight punishment still holds. But we are not going to work in my office nor am I going to ever let you go home alone."

"What do you mean?"

"You will be personally escorted to my outhouse every night. And as a matter of fact, you are going to live there."
